Mike Ashley is one man who could have stopped Celtic...

...and Rangers told him where to go says Davie Provan

Rangers should have rolled the red Axminster down the marble staircase for the London billionaire

BY DAVIE PROVAN 11th February 2017, 10:35 pm

AFTER Friday’s night of the long knives, Mark Warburton, Davie Weir and Frank McParland all found themselves out of a job.

Another high-profile name should have been on that list — Dave King.

For the moment Warburton’s sacking will take the heat off Rangers’ absentee chairman, but Ibrox fans should be asking questions of this guy.

In the week Celtic announced a 95 per cent increase in revenues, does anyone still believe King is the man to save Rangers?Who, but the seriously gullible, thinks King has either the cash or the contacts to make Rangers a proper football club again?

King didn’t win the boardroom battle just because he was a “Rangers man.”He convinced supporters he had the wealth and the nous to turn the club around.

Up until now, evidence has been in short supply.

A bit like King himself, who appears to prefer the South African sunshine to his seat in the Ibrox directors box.How can you run a club of Rangers’ size from Johannesburg? This isn’t PlayStation.

For all Warburton’s faults, and there are many, he found himself binned by e-mail? King should have been there to front up the manger.

But the tacky way it was handled sums up Gers right now. If there’s a way to make a backside of anything, they’ll find it.From the moment Sir David Murray sold the jerseys to Craig Whyte, Rangers have followed one blunder with another.

But the daddy of them all has to be the decision to go to war with Mike Ashley.

The Sports Direct tycoon could have solved Gers financial problems overnight. Instead, it’s taking donations to keep the Ibrox lights on.

Rangers should have rolled the red Axminster down the marble staircase for the London billionaire.Instead, they p****d off the one guy with the money to give Celtic a run for theirs.

You can bet Hoops’ directors had the cigars out when King won control.Ashley was the only threat to Celtic’s dominance. But King’s boardroom victory took the pressure off.

Right now, Dermot Desmond can expect to hoover up millions in Champions League cash for years to come.

It could have been different.

Ashley’s plan was to sell Newcastle and take Rangers into the Champions League. He knew that was impossible with the Magpies. But Scotland is a different ball game, where Celtic present the only serious opposition.

Be in no doubt, Ashley was up for that challenge and had the money to take on Desmond. But instead of bankrolling Gers back into rude health, he’s currently shafting them for every replica strip sold. A guy who could have changed Rangers fortunes overnight, is now their nemesis.

When the charlatans were finally flushed from the Ibrox boardroom, Rangers were in a bad way.In Ashley, they had a multi-billionaire wanting control of the club. And they told him to do one?

Logic has no place in football, but the rejection of Ashley beggared belief.

What did it matter he wasn’t a Gers man? Was Roman Abramovich a Chelsea fan when he was a kid?Come to think of it, I never saw Desmond at Celtic Park during the decade I was there.

Ashley saw Rangers as a vehicle to promote Sports Direct in Europe. A bit like Sheikh Mansour using Manchester City to advertise his airline. You won’t find a City fan complaining about the Abu Dhabi control at the Etihad.

Sure, Ashley would have done well out of the brand, but Gers could have done equally well from him.For starters, unlike the current regime, he’d have thrown serious money at the team.

For all the stick he takes on Tyneside, nobody can argue with his commitment. You don’t get a coach of Rafa Benitez’ calibre on the cheap.Every one of his managers has been given the tools to do the job.

Contrast that with Warburton who found his board baulking at a new contract for Kenny Miller.Whatever you make of Warbs’ signings last summer, the guy needed help in the winter transfer window. He got zip, zilch, zero.

Ahead of the trip to Dundee next weekend, Gers should be sounding out Aberdeen on the prospects of hiring Derek McInnes, but there’s not a chance in hell they will stretch to compensation.

So much for King’s £30million.

Oh Christ!!

What a heap of tosh. Rubbishing the article would require a modicum of time and attention, far more than it deserves.

I wonder if he came up with this crap himself, or did a big bhoy do it for him.

What brain? Going by the above, his IQ seems to about 5, which is 10 less than that of a dead rat.

Rodents cover 40% of the population transmitting Hantavirus, Rat-bite fever and our our old friend Mad Rabid Rabies..It's a myth re plague which is transmitted by their fleas(font if all knowledge me, I am...)

They can somehow not only survive in EVERY continent but also being a, flushed down the karzy, b, a 5 story drop(when kicked off!) c, squeeze through tiny little openings and d, chew threw all sorts of shit!! Lastly though yes, the doooo breed like their is no tomorrow(well, for many there won't be??)

In summary the are dumb as feck, usually transmitting disease, covered in fleas, somehow manage to survive horrific living conditions and are followed by scores of waens!!!

Does that remind me of anyone?............,

The man who spent a dozen years at ra Piggery, rejoicing in his Yahoo given nickname, 'Provo'.

Show Davey the moral high ground and both crampons and ice-axe are immediately to the fore. As Provo never tires of telling us, he is a long term golfing partner of Dermot. In between copious congratulations on Dermot's approach shots, Provo listens. Dermot has flagged up what a great bloke Mike is, Provo wrote it, and Peter okayed it before ordering publication. Next week, Provo will examine the correlation between Rangers and the peace process, after giving Dermot another gimme.
