Portuguese coach wastes no time in making his mark as he tells former Gers No.1 he will have no place in his new look backroom team.

 

Pedro Caixinha began his Rangers rebuild yesterday by axeing veteran goalkeeper coach Jim Stewart.

Record Sport understands the 63-year-old former Scotland keeper has been told he will have no place in Caixinha’s new look backroom team and he is now set to cut his ties with the club after 10 years on the staff.

 

Stewart – a former Rangers No.1 – was brought back to Ibrox by former boss Walter Smith in 2007 after the managerial reshuffle which saw Paul le Guen given the boot.

 

He is also part of Gordon Strachan’s Scotland set-up and this may have played a part in Caixinha’s decision to move him on.

 

Caixinha – who was himself a former goalkeeper – is a self-confessed workaholic and it’s understood he demands similar round-the-clock attitudes from all of his staff.

 

A source said: “Pedro views any breaks for international matches as vital for training and tactical work.“If Jim is away on Scotland duty then that’s hardly ideal.”

That's a real shame for Jim. Real gentleman and definitely helped our keepers develop during the time he was at the club. However, I think he may have been retiring at the end of the season (?) so would probably have been a mutual agreement in any event.

When I saw the new boss was bringing a gk coach with him I suggested on here that JS may have been a candidate.

That's correct Frankie. He had spoken about retiring for a while and this seems to make sense in terms of timing. He's been a brilliant coach and the players like him. Of course this truth doesn't sell as many papers so won't make the 'news'.

Stewart has done his job. Between the sticks is the only non disaster area of the park. Foderingham hasn't matched the prowess of his illustrious predecessors but he's not too bad. Bell was the only failure.
