The Bauchle -now, I think we may say without fear of contradiction- a 'specialist in failure', has come up with a novel excuse....

"Strachan pointed to the lack of height in the Scottish population as a problem, a matter which will raise eyebrows given the basic level of goals conceded to Slovenia. Organisation, rather than physicality, appeared the key issue.

“Technically we’re fine,” Strachan added. “But our guys have to work harder to get on the ball than bigger lads at six foot three.

“What I do know is that genetically we are behind. In the last campaign we were the second smallest squad behind Spain. That means that I had to pick a team tonight to try and combat their height and strength. Even at that we couldn’t combat their height and strength at set plays. Genetically we have to work at things. It is a problem for us.

“We have to fight harder for every ball and jump higher because it is easier for these type of guys. Physically we have a problem against the teams we have faced in the last couple of years.”

Oh for the new Lee Wilkie.....and a taller Manager......

Lets see = Spain were smallest and the winners Portugal were third smallest. Inbetween them was Scotland, so, of the three smallest teams - two did rather well

Also how genetically different are Northern Ireland's players?

Plus -

Archie Gemmill

Billy Bremner

Willie Johnstone

Willie Henderson

etc.

Maradona

Messi

Iniesta

Xavi

etc.

It is a fact though that footballers are becoming larger athletes. You really have to have a special talent as a small footballer.

Agreed, anyone who watched the England v Scotland U21 match you could see the English players were much bigger and more physical and they are current under 20 worlld champs!

English football teams at whatever age since I started watching football in the 60's have always been bigger and stronger looking than any Scotland team they faced. It didn't stop us beating them the odd time, maybe given they have 10 times the pool to pick from gives the reason why.

Strapon is talking shyte, Just what I expected him to do.

Chase him and his useless partner imo.

I was agreeing with the point Pete makes, which is a fact!, we are not in the 60s', football has changed!

You get a winger like wee Willie Henderson getting behind the defence and crossing a ball from the bye-line to Jimmie Millar or Ralphie Brand - goal.

What's so different in today's game?

p.s. none of them were six foot giants.

Were Henderson, Millar, Brand special?
