Flanagan is a RB though and a very solid one (he has been capped by England in that position)

Yes but his performances have been poor after an initially reasonable start.  He's now behind Halliday as backup left back and even though Tav is almost dead on his feet, with the Manager commenting on several occasions in recent weeks about the need to give him a rest; he still can't get a game at right back.

Perhaps it’s not cover they are looking for?....

Interesting... wouldn't surprise me if clubs were in for Tav given previous rumours.

Is there more substance this time round?

It would make sense in terms of bringing in money, if we are thinking of a relatively substantial outlay in January.

Exactly. I don’t think they’re checking if he’s good enough to be a backup, I think they’re checking if he’s good enough to replace Tav. It looks like West Brom have lived to regret not upping their bid so it wouldn’t be surprising to see them come back in for him. And Polster has been a mainstay at Chicago Fire. Why would he come to play a bit part role in a foreign country.

If you're Steven Gerrard and you know the current squad isn't good enough to win the league, and you know the board doesn't have deep pockets, then you'd be looking to see whether there are any players who you could sell for decent money so you can fill the critical gaps that are staring back at you every week. Steven Gerrard didn't come to Rangers to sit and watch the world go by and if selling Tavernier or anyone else means, on balance, having a more able squad then he will do it. And so he should.
