Not likely. Chicago Fire have a higher average wage than us. If he’s coming for money he’s not being offered a backup player’s wage.

It won't be for money, at least not right away. The attraction of Rangers is as a platform from which to reach for the EPL, which should suitRangers recruitment policy to a tee.

Depends on whether he is on the average or above or below.  Of course there is also the added incentive, as Bill says, about the potential of getting yourself into the European spotlight.

If you're Steven Gerrard and you know the current squad isn't good enough to win the league, and you know the board doesn't have deep pockets, then you'd be looking to see whether there are any players who you could sell for decent money so you can fill the critical gaps that are staring back at you every week. Steven Gerrard didn't come to Rangers to sit and watch the world go by and if selling Tavernier or anyone else means, on balance, having a more able squad then he will do it. And so he should.

I agree with this.

However, would our European run not have been money that was never expected - sure, we don't have the cashflow right now for it but we can bank on it - so if we made even 7 million profit we should be able to buy a player or two at 1-2 million and still come out even, even after wages.

Obviously it depends on what the financial projections are/were and to what extent they were planning on funding from their own pockets this season and whether they are still prepared to do so and have the European money as "bonus money" to the manager to strengthen the squad.

I don't think we are that far away in all honesty.  It is a tough one because if we were to spend a bit in January and then go on to win the league it has a double whammy in that we have such a massive uplift at the club but, just as importantly, it could see the financial wheels fall off Celtic because they have a massive salary structure which requires CL money to be self-sustaining - if we denied them an attempt at the CL they could head into freefall.

It's a win-win for both.

They get to play in a better standard of league and earn much higher wages and, for us, if they sign for an EPL team it means they will have performed well for us AND more than likely see us realise decent profit.

It is what our new recruitment policy effectively needs to be.

Just a footnote but IF you sell Tav so as to fund a creative player, you have to be conscious that in losing Tav, you lose a big part of the teams current creativity.

Was thinking the exact same thing earlier.  He has his flaws defensively but he is one of our most creative talents.  Has been in need of a rest as his form has dipped - but if we sell him we in essence lose a RB and a creative player in one....

Depending on a fullback for creativity, especially one who hasn't created shit for an age, might not be the best structure for success.
