The William Poole thing is most complicated but the usual suspects in new, modern Scotland reduce it down to anti-catholicism.

 

It is the 1840s on the north east coast of the USA. The great famine is happening in Ireland and on the northern west coast of Scotland but, other tragedies are occurring ie the pogroms in Eastern Europe and the beginning of the end of slavery in the south of the States. Tremendous mobility of labour concluded at the entry point to the USA, New York. Irish, Jews and, Blacks arrived in increasing numbers and lowered the price of labour. Those born and bred in New York attempted to ring fence jobs and opportunities. I am NOT agreeing with this or the methods chosen to effect the decision, I am explaining the facts.

 

During the 1840s in New York, Tammany Hall was in full swing. William Poole and his ilk felt they had no recourse, they advocated protective collectives and fought those they perceived to be undermining their standard of lives.  I suspect those responsible for Tuesday night's TIFO feel similar(I mean the decision makers) and, have decided to lionise Bill the Butcher. Martin Scorsese's film was an over romanticised version of Poole's life, as John Mc says, he perished at the hands of one of his adversaries.

 

As a retired chap, the one aspect of Poole's life I find attractive is he was the founder of, 'the Know Nothing' political party. Shelby Foote does a pretty convincing critique on Poole's political activism being one of the enablers leading to the election of Abraham Lincoln in 1860. I  find our current crop of professional politicians to be deeply unattractive, particularly here in Scotland. They have few if any principles other than narcism and maintaining their snout in the flowing trough. Nihilism can be just as attractive as nationalism but, just as wrong.

 

The usual suspects clap their hands to gain attention then identify their preferred bad guys. The events of nearly 200 years past in another continent are revised to suit their agenda. I have posted on another thread that the TIFO was clever because it upset those that find William Poole's actual life to be inconvenient. Today is the anniversary of the St Bartholomew's Day massacre, modern day estimates say between 10,000-30,000 Huguenots were murdered in a single day in late 16th century France. Now, that is really inconvenient and maybe should be a consideration for the next TIFO?

William Poole was a 19th century gang leader, and anti-immigration/ultra nationalist politician. 

 

Now why Scottish people decided to put up a display of an American who was also anti-Scottish immigration, BTW.

 

As Scotland and Ireland were neck and neck on boat loads of destitution in the early to mid 19th century.

 

Many of our first slaves were Scots and Irish scooped from the streets and debtors prisons.

 

However, if you extract Bill 'the butcher', the man, from the equation it kinda makes sense from an ideological standpoint. 

 

Though we are not allowed to speak in such tones...Europe is being overrun.

 

Every first world nation is.

 

That's what it means to me anywho. 

 

However, I don't credit the Ultra Bears with anything that profound. 

 

At least on the conscious level.

He wasn't a fictional character, William 'Bill The Butcher' Poole was an actual person and a New York gang leader. It was Daniel Day Lewis's image they used from the Scorcese film, but to be fair they'd be hard pushed to find a photo of the real guy, and if they had we'd have spent 5 pages of this thread wondering who the hell was the guy on the UB banner.
