Gazza held after hotel incident

Paul Gascoigne

Gascoigne was capped 57 times for England

Former England footballer Paul Gascoigne has been detained under the Mental Health Act following an incident at a Tyneside hotel.

Northumbria Police said a 40-year-old man was detained at Gateshead's Hilton Hotel on Wednesday evening when concern was raised about his behaviour.

Mr Gascoigne had been asked to leave Newcastle's Malmaison Hotel earlier that day after a disturbance.

Police said he was not in custody and was now receiving medical treatment.

Mr Gascoigne is understood to have moved to the Hilton Hotel after leaving the Malmaison in the early hours of Wednesday.

Northumbria Police confirmed a 40-year-old man had been detained under the Mental Health Act.

Alcohol problems

A Hilton spokesperson said: "We can confirm that the guest in question checked into the hotel early on Wednesday 20 February.

"While there was no disturbance caused (at the Hilton), we did receive a phone call from the police later that day.

"Since then we can confirm that he was escorted calmly from the hotel and we are continuing to co-operate with the police."

Mr Gascoigne has battled for some time with alcohol and health problems.

In January 2005, he was hospitalised with pneumonia and last year he underwent emergency surgery for a perforated stomach ulcer after being taken ill as he was celebrating his 40th birthday.

He was arrested for an alleged assault on a photographer outside a Liverpool city centre hotel in 2005. The charges were later dropped.

A former player with Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspur, Lazio, Glasgow Rangers and Middlesbrough, he was sacked after 39 days as manager of Kettering Town in 2005.

He was capped 57 times for England.

Absolute legend of a guy.

Reading what the tinks are saying is absolutely disgusting. I wouldn't wish what Gazza is suffering from on my worst enemy although I now want the disturbed individuals to rot in hell.

Shame on them!

I for one will be leading a few renditions of We Love You Gazza on Sunday at Ibrox - I hope that everyone of the Rangers fans in attendance show their support for him at this horrible time in his life.

As for the sub-humans from the other side of the city, they will have to answer to their maker at some point in time and as our Gazza says, may they all rot on hell. And they'll try and kid you on that they are 'christains' as well...

I can imagine what those numbnuts are saying. Tossbags !

He is a disturbed soul himself and has needed help for a long time.

They had an interview with Graham Taylor on the radio where he says "someone called me and asked if I had heard what had happened to Gazza and my heart just sank" - the sad thing is that Taylor thought Gazza might have been found dead, or at least he was implying that - and there aren't many people who would be surprised if that was the case.

Get well soon Gazza, take all the help being offered (Newcastle have already confirmed they will do whatever they can to help - it is time for us to do likewise)

Horribley, when Mrs Cammy asked me if I had heard about Gazza, the same thoughts jumped into my mind.

Not horrible at all Cammy, it is just that his life and the demons within mean that we all have those horrible thoughts when his name is mentioned.

Such a tormented person and you can only pray that he receives proper help and attention and that he accepts it, and comes out the other end.

A number of Paul Gascoigne's former colleagues and opponents have offered their support to the troubled star.

The ex-England midfielder was sectioned under the Mental Health Act following a series of incidents at a hotel in Gateshead this week, but many of those in the game who know him believe he can come through his problems.

Newcastle manager Kevin Keegan has been in contact with the player's family and is willing to offer help in whatever way he can.

"He was my boot boy when I was a player here and not a very good boot boy at that," he said on Sky Sports News. "He lost my boots.

"We as a club will do everything we can to help. His family know that - we've talked to them - and we can help a lot.

"It's sad, but maybe what's happened now will be a turning point for him. Instead of looking at as something really bad, this might be the best thing.

"I have talked to his dad and one of his sisters and I know it looks negative but I think it's a massive positive for Paul Gascoigne from all the information I've had."

'Loved by everybody'

Middlesbrough boss Gareth Southgate played with Gascoigne in the England side that reached the semi-finals of Euro 96, and he remains optimistic about the situation.

"It is obviously a very sad situation, but I am sure he will come through it," he said.

"He was loved by everybody because he put everybody else first.

"He would do anything for anybody and, hopefully, people will do the same for him now because he obviously needs that help."

Wigan manager Steve Bruce, who has struck up a friendship with Gascoigne, said: "Like everyone else, I am obviously saddened and shocked.

"We all hope where he is now, he is in the best hands and we hope he can come through this major obstacle.

"He has come through before but he will need the support of everyone around him and let's hope he is okay."

Gascoigne was part of the Everton squad when David Moyes took over at the club, and Moyes says he has always been a popular figure at the club.

"He is a good man, a good person and was always willing to help others. Everyone at this club will tell you that," he said.

"When I have been around him he has proved to be a real gent. We all here hope he gets the help he needs."

'Massive gap'

Roy Keane played against Gascoigne as part of the Nottingham Forest team beaten by Tottenham in the 1991 FA Cup final, and he believes the troubled star has found it difficult since retiring from football.

"We all send our best to Paul," he said. "It's obviously sad, but we pray from everyone from Sunderland that he pulls through okay because no-one likes to see that.

"That is a problem, particularly with a lot of footballers when you stop playing - there is a massive gap in your life.

"We all pray that Paul finds a bit of peace and serenity because he deserves it."

Let's hope he comes through this for the better and takes some of the help offered. Would love us to offer some help. I think if he was involved with us or Newcastle in anyway he may overcome some of the demons.
