Yet if Timmy were to be believed they are ambassadors for our country.......
-
Shame the mainstream media don't have a journalist to put that in their papers.
-
So pre-season friendlies are "prostituting" now ? I guess we pimped ourselves when we went to LA then did we ?
-
What Global brand do we have ? Are we becoming Tims, bothering more about them than ourselves ? Again, at least they are trying - it is called forward-thinking from a business sense. We aren't doing anything (or at least weren't until this summer). The good thing is they arent stretching ahead of us. As for your "merchandising myth" - go anywhere abroad and you are likely to see more of their tops than ours - I don't believe for a minute that someone saw more Gers tops than Tims tops - I travel to the US at least 3 times a year (for 7 years now) and I have NEVER seen more Gers tops than Tims tops - sorry, but I think whoever said that was looking for Gers tops.
-
I think we take it seriously because we hope he will follow through. I would be happy if we got Whittaker and a creative mid - if we can also get a striker too then I think we will be in very good shape to make this season a very close run thing with the Tims.

To say that the 15,000 crowd before Beckham is one thing - but you don't think that part of the reason for the crowd was because people in LA wanted to taste "soccer" prior to Beckham coming in order to know at least a bit about it. I think to suggest that the 15,000 crowd didn't have some of the "Beckham element" is naive.
-
No it isn't laughable. Just because there weren't good crowds doesn't mean that they aren't making in roads. Example, LA Galaxy will likely see attendances of 10-20 thousand but they sold a shit load of Beckham tops - and the merchandising is where the money is made, not ticket sales. So you can't assume that crowd sizes are indicative of their reputation there. Also, a global brand is not just USA is it ? No it isnt. Have you looked at what the crowds were when the Tims went to the US last year ? They were pretty hefty crowds I believe, even though it was to play teams like Chelsea. Also, building a brand in a region requires more than one trip and one effort - Celtic look like making this US thing an annual trip and that will only improve their reputation there. They are at least trying to tap into markets with huge potential - we are now only realising this, so again lag behind them.
-
If you say Whittaker at 1.8, Naismith at 1.5 (if we wont increase our bid but still get him) Then we have almost 2 mill on someone else too. Hopefully this isn't a "moonbeams" type statement.

Were we a bigger draw when we were over there ? NO we weren't. At least they have been making an effort to tap into the US market.

Very interesting, shows (if you believe him....) that we are still in the market for players which will make a strong squad even stronger - hopefully one of the players being sought is a creative midfielder. I agree that getting through the CL qualifiers will probably determine how much more we will spend. I agree, I think he might just be right about Brown - I can see the validity of what he says and if you pay Brown that amount of money (25k per week) then Hutton, Smith, Adam etc will expect similar wages and that will put us back in the financial mess we were in.

Cousin(s) signed for a Spanish team today apparently though.

Did it all by themselves did they ?:fish:

To bring a creative mid in I see WS dropping a forward and going with a 4-2-3-1 - personally I would prefer to see Ferguson/Hemdani or Thomson benched for a creative midfielder and staying with a 4-4-2 with the creative midfielder breaking from the mid.
-
I think we have plenty of cover for the striking positions. In reading Lee McCulloch's interview on sporting life it seems that he is set to play on the right side of midfield this year Gribz - Burke will be an able back up to McCulloch and then on the left we will have Beasley and Adam. I think our squad looks reasonably strong, if not exciting. Buffel, if fit and applying himself, could fill the creative role - could Burke be trained for that role too, or is he just too lightweight ? I felt he looked good coming in off the flanks last season, but was too inconsistent.

With Sionko gone.... if Sebo goes.... Gribz will need to be put on suicide watch :fish:

Gribz will be disappointed :fish:

I know exactly how you feel Cammy and it is a very difficult decision. In that other thread I don't disagree with anything you said, just that I felt you were being harsh. The people at the TOP of our Club should be utterly ashamed of how they have let us slip from being the most dominant force our country has seen since the 60's into being a distant 2nd. The Tims had the bankers at the door ready to close it for good just 10 yrs ago (or maybe a little but more but not much) and we were MILES ahead of them in EVERY way. Yet here we stand and they have taken over us simply because they have used good business acumen and have known how to turn things around. Whilst we have a Chairman that doesn't care, his sidekick who IMO is an incompetent twat that would have been sacked from any other high ranking post prior to now had he been with any other company aside from Rangers, their "PR machine" is always in high gear to ensure that they are "innocent" whilst we allow ourselves to be pilloried. It is very difficult right now to be a Bear..... but I would never turn my back on them. In terms of a marriage I think right now I would say that Rangers and I would be a marriage of convenience !!
-
In other words, as Cammy says, SWEEP SWEEP.
-
Cammy, You think that McCoist, in an interview where he might be required to respond swiftly will be thinking "now, should I mention when we did it in a 9IAR game or when the Tims did it to us" ? Come on, that is silly - the Tims doing it to us is fresher in the mind. Yes, the red card displays might have been a better example - but I challenge any of us to say we have never said something under pressure that afterwards we realised there were much better things to say. As for this being an issue for other clubs in Scotland - yes of course it is - but Rangers and its fans should only concern themselves with their own contribution. When/If the sheep use their usual diatribe then it will be time to seek the SPL to come down hard on them and if only to ensure consistent aplpication in their own rules. I said before and I will say again, the SPL have set themselves up for a HUGE fall because it will be nigh on impossible to manage the appication of that "offensive" rule.

I don't disagree Johnny - THEY are getting away with it because they are defending themselves much better than we are. But I would rather that we, as a club (management and fans alike) dealt with our problems ourselves - then we won't, or shouldn't, have the same need to defend ourselves - if you make yourself squeeky clean then shit shouldn't stick - and at that point the focus will be on them. We have known for a while that they have a much more effective PR/media vehicle. I just prefer we as a CLUB see our own failings and try to deal with them.

We still need to get our own house in order. We aren't exactly hoiler than thou. Neither are they. But we can't control their actions. McCoist may have been wrong in what he said - you never said something when under pressure that you realised later was wrong ?

Rather harsh in your assessment Cammy. The jist of what they were saying, IMO, was that the sectarian songs need to be eradicated as we need to bend to the powers that be the SPL and UEFA. Where in the article did it say we should act more like the Tims ? I can't say I saw that in the article.

Much of what you say is perfectly logical BC2. However, I simply cannot agree with you when you say "is Naismith is emotionally traumatised Gers should pay what Killie feel he is worth". Taking that argument to an extreme you are saying that if Rangers think he is worth 1 mill but Killie feel he is worth 5 mill Rangers should just pay the 5 mill because the player is emotionally traumatised - that is a nonsense statement. It is not Rangers fault that the player feels that way. It appears that the player wants to sign for Rangers - in situations like these it is usually, but not always, the selling club who bend a little because they have a player on their hands that does not want to be there. But Naismith's mental wellbeing is NOTHING to do with Rangers, nor should it concern them because, as things stand, he is not their player.

Also.... It takes two to tango - you can't just "sign him or not" without having agreement with the other party so you can't just think that this is all about Rangers not doing the right thing. Although... Fraser's "sign him or not" analogy actually covers all eventualities so not sure which one I should be arguing....

Yes it could be. If their financial year end is July 31 then it makes sense for Hibs to wait till August 1 as they will not be taxed on the income till NEXT year. Tax years for corporations are different to tax years for individuals.
