  1. Sambuca (Italian pronunciation: [samˈbuːka]) is an Italian anise-flavoured, usually colourless, liqueur. Sambuca may be served neat. It may also be served on the rocks or with water, resulting in the ouzo effect from the anethole (careful how you say that) in the anise. Sambuca is considered to go particularly well with coffee. Like other anise liqueurs, it may be drunk after coffee as a ammazzacaffè or added directly to coffee in place of sugar. The most iconic serving of sambuca is a shot with three coffee beans, called con la mosca, which means "with the fly". The three coffee beans are said to represent health, happiness and prosperity, or the Holy Trinity. The shot may be ignited to toast the coffee beans with the flame extinguished immediately before drinking. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sambuca It was a favourite of Sir Hugh Fraser, after dinner in the Colonial Restaurant at the bottom of High St in the 70's, where I tried to impress the odd lady or two
  2. Minutes published within 12 hours of the close of business, well done Mister Super Secretary Cooper; a lesson to some others perhaps
  3. It was a pleasure to organise and I'm glad that everyone seems to have enjoyed the evening, though some started earlier and finished later than others. It was good to renew old acquaintances and put faces to other pseudonyms for the first time. Personally I was just a little disappointed at the slow start to the service but I think that was a consequence of using the café whilst Cristobal was unusually busy next door for that time of evening. I think what happened was that he had instructed the staff to wait for me to give the “go” and I thought he would have instructed them to put out the tapas in batches as at the first dinner. However once we got that sorted I thought it went fine. On a culinary note Cristobal normally fires the Crema Catalans a bit crisper on top than his staff did this time. A quarter point off for that on my card. Other than these minor points, I was very happy with Malaga Tapas food and service and the café seemed to work well as a venue for our numbers. Cristobal would appreciate any comments that anyone cares to post on Tripadvisor.
  4. I think it should be recorded that Charltonman very generously left £60 behind the bar which more or less paid for half the wine that was drunk. By coincidence we collected £60 more than was needed to pay the bar tab and Cristobal did not charge for the final round of schnaps etc; so I gave both the waiter and waitress £20 tips each and the two who were working in the kitchen £10 each. In hindsight might have been fairer to give £15 each, I'll bear that in mind next time.
  5. That's very generous of you, MB, but it was worth the small expense to get my own back on Charltonman for the ribbing he gave me about not having one last time
  6. THE BIG DAY HAS ARRIVED NO - ALLY HASN'T RESIGNED.......YET IT'S THE SECOND OFFICIAL SEMI-ANNUAL GERSNET DINNER (WITH SPECIAL GUEST STAR DAVE SMITH) AKA THE GERSNET CHRISTMAS DINNER
  7. Listen buddy I'm not pretending to be a graphic artist; thought I'd done pretty well to get the picture of an actual Malaga CF game in La Rosaleda Tried various colours and sizes but red seems to work best; black is worse. If the crowd all wore white it would be a lot easier! However by making the picture smaller I've cleared the top and bottom for you so how about this I'll have a few prints of each if anyone wants them as a memento of this auspicious occasion.
  8. The Official Menu for The Second Official Semi-Annual Gersnet Dinner (with Special Guest Star Dave Smith) has now been officially published.

  10. You can thank me if it goes well, complain to Cristobal if it doesn't. I remember many years ago Rangers beating St Mirren at Ibrox after the opposition defence were described in glowing terms in the match programme and the Herald writer on the Monday (might have been Alf Young) repeating the descriptions and then mentioning that obviously the St Mirren preparation had not included reading about themselves in the programme. However, in this case I know that Cristobal will have his team well prepared and I am confident of a good result. Can still take a couple more today if there are any late comers please PM.
  11. The team selection - preferring Dailly to Hemdani (sic) in CMF and performance (switching off with a precarious away goal advantage) in Kaunas were inexplicable, made worse by the winner being scored by one Linas Pilibaitis who couldn't get a game for Hearts, the wettest weather this side of Livorno and Lithuanian Airlines losing my bag. A pretty dismal night all round.
  12. As far as I can work out at this time: Frankie + 3 going direct [4] SC & Son + Juancorneto going direct [3] FS & DS going direct [2] Elfideldo going direct [1] Total of 10 going direct. plgsarmy, MountainBear & gunslinger bringing cars [3] BD, BH, TB, RR, charltonman +2, SteveC +1, meeting at the Day-Today shop for said transport. [9] Total of 12 going in 3 cars from Edmiston Drive at PRW. Any errors or omissions from the above please advise asap.
  13. Here are the final selections for Saturdays teams, sorry tapas: (There will be a selection of cold meats & bread on the tables to start.) Pescados Pescado en Adobo Gambas al Pil-Pil Carnes Morcilla Española (Cristobal would like folk to be aware that Spanish black pudding is not the same as the Scottish variety) Chorizo frito al vino tinto Verduras Pisto Manchego Bravas con salsa Picante & a’li-oli Aves Croquetas de Pollo Pollo a la Crema Can't be bothered copying in all the English explanations but for the non-Spanish speakers they can be viewed here http://malagatapas.co.uk/menu/. The selections were made partly from the requests and partly based on Cristobal's experience of the best tapas for sharing in a large group. There will be two tables of 10/12 and each table will have two paellas one Montana (chicken and dry-cured chorizo) and one Paella de Mariscos (seafood Paella with prawns, mussels squid and white fish). If you have room you can finish with any dessert on the blackboard but I would recommend the crème catalan (Spanish crème brulee) which Cristobal fires at the table. We can still fit in another couple of people if anyone wants to join us, please PM me but the final final deadline will be midnight Friday and there will be no pay at the door.
  14. The loss to Dan Petrescu's Unirea was indeed a humiliation; their journalists were out their seats at the first goal, by the fourth they were on another planet. Their stadium was not regarded as fit for European games and the away match was played in the Steaua Bucharest stadium, though the description of it as a stadium will doubtless bring a wry smile to the faces of those who were there and worse memories of the police and terrible scenes inside the ground, where we at least managed a draw. In 2010, the team's owner withdrew financial support and Urziceni was forced to sell most of its players to pay debts, leading to relegation at the end of the 2010–11 season. In 2010, Unirea Urziceni started to decline. Dumitru Bucşaru sold almost the entire team during the first half of the championship, in the account of a debit to the Steaua owner Gigi Becali. In the second half of the season, Unirea loaned players from Steaua II Bucureşti and Dinamo II Bucureşti, but failed to maintain their place in the Liga I, finishing the season on 17th place. Even if Unirea can spare from the relegation, the club didn't solicit license and was dissolved in 2011. In the summer of 2011, owner Dumitru Bucşaru did not file for a licence for the club to play in the Liga II, and decided not to enroll the team in any championship. Unirea Urziceni was subsequently dissolved http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FC_Unirea_Urziceni Remind you of anything?
  15. No doubt Davie Smith will tell us all how we rose from those particular ashes at the Dinner on Saturday. Can still squeeze another couple in, if there are any late joiners?
