  1. I think it's quite a nice name and he's a very nice lad.
  2. A certain former member of this site named his son "Miko" after him.
  3. Bobby Shearer was a classic full back in the days when back meant back, few (aside from Francisco Gento) got past him and lived to tell the tale. There is an argument for John Greig but there really is no issue here IMO; it has to be Harold Davis who played football when it was a man's game, after 2 years recovering from bullet wounds, with shrapnel still in his body from the Korean War. http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/real-life/heroes-2014-soldier-who-cheated-3440222
  4. Just thinking about that in 1995-96 all three were in our team that won the 8th of 9-in-a-row.
  5. I appreciate that this is not necessarily a guide but going back to my dinner quiz, Rangers have only ever had three players who have featured in the World or UEFA Rankings and none whilst they were at Ibrox: Oleksiy Mykhaylychenko was 4th in the European Footballer of the Year ("Ballon d'Or") in 1988 and signed for Rangers in 1991. Paul Gascoigne also was 4th in Europe in 1991 and signed for Rangers in 1995. but our only World Ranked player ever was Brian Laudrup who was voted the 5th best player in the world in FIFA World Player of the Year rankings in 1992 and joined Rangers two years later.
  6. I think that's very unfair on Mikhailichenko who was consistently played out of position but nonetheless was a joy to watch and scored a goal every 5/6 games for us.
  7. Fortunately the Celtic players were at your party but the boys in blue were tucked up in bed early.
  8. Very sad to see that photograph, he always gave his all for the Club.
  9. Puskas wasn't the fastest thing on two legs but he was a lethal striker
  10. Who could forget him. Oleksiy Oleksandrovych Mykhaylychenko (Ukrainian: Олексій Олександрович Михайличенко; born March 30, 1963), was a superb player; but allegedly always last out of the dressing room because he was blow drying his hair. He is a Distinguished Master of Sports of USSR and a Distinguished Coach of Ukraine. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oleksiy_Mykhaylychenko I remember "The Great Defender" saying that he always checked the team sheet to see if there was any chance of AM playing in central midfield where he belonged but he was usually played wide left. He chipped in with a fair few goals including these against Celtic. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m6BevQv3HNQ Three years before we got him he split these famous Dutchmen in the European Footballer of the Year ("Ballon d'Or"). 1. Marco VAN BASTEN (Milan) (Netherlands) 129 2. Ruud Gullit (Milan) (Netherlands) 88 3. Frank Rijkaard (Milan) (Netherlands) 45 4. Alexei Mikhailichenko (Dynamo Kiev) (Soviet Union) 41 5. Ronald Koeman (PSV) (Netherlands) 39
  11. That is a haha story alright. Bet they were on the vodka/bru's. Baxter, McKinnon & Co used to go to a Club my uncle owned in Glasgow, the Blue Grotto; hence I have their autographs.
  12. Quite right it was 1-1. I was there and got knocked over and nearly sent flying when we scored. Boyd missed a sitter to put us through in the last few seconds.
  13. In terms of Rangers players that I've seen: Baxter, Laudrup, Gascoigne and Ronald de Boer in that order. However, for pure football brain, de Boer gets it every time. I would have to give opposition players a lot of thought and I wouldn't argue with any of the names mentioned but there were several in the 2 time European Champion Inter Milan side of 1965 who were at their peak: e.g. LB Giacinto Facchetti, No 9 Sandro Mazzola and the deep lying No 10 Luis Suárez, the lynch pin in the catenacchio system. "Suarez originally achieved prominence as a creative inside forward or attacking midfielder for the great Barcelona team of the 1950s before he joined Inter Milan where he reached his prime as deep lying playmaker for the legendary Grande Inter team of the 1960s. He played a pivotal role in the success Herrera's Inter Milan side, and was one of the primary creative forces in the squad, due to his ball skills, vision, and passing range." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luis_Su%C3%A1rez_(footballer,_born_1935) As an aside, on a February night in 1965 when the snow had been cleared and was piled high at the side of the pitch, Rangers came within a late George McLean header off the bar of recovering a 3-1 away loss to take Helenio Herrera's side to a 3rd game in the Quarter Final (there was no "away goals" rule in those days and Rangers had already defeated Red Star Belgrade 3-1 in a Preliminary Round Play-off at Highbury). Inter went on to beat the legendary Liverpool side of Ian St John, Roger Hunt, Tommy Smith et al, 4-3 on aggregate in the Semis and a Benfica team boosting an outstanding forward line of Jose Augusto, Jose Torres, Eusebio, and António Simões 1-0 in the final. I'd give Juan Riquelme of Villarreal an honourable mention. “He broke the mould. Understanding, mental speed, respect for the game and love for the ball. And The Best Speaker Ever. I will miss you Roman,” tweeted the journalist Juan Pablo Varsky to his 579,000 followers. The veteran sports columnist Horacio Pagani described Riquelme as “the second inventor of football; the first were the English over one hundred years ago”. And the former Real Madrid player turned TV pundit Quique Wolff suggested Boca retire the No10 shirt as a mark of respect. Perhaps the pinnacle of his career was in 2006, when his presence at Villarreal put the small club on the European map, and his steady, slow leadership of a complex orchestra was at the heart of some of the most wonderful World Cup football Argentina have ever performed." https://www.theguardian.com/football/2015/jan/27/juan-roman-riquelme-argentina-football-retires In theory he played left midfield but constantly came inside and ran the game from the centre circle. Rangers held on doggedly in the last-16 Champions League tie and twice came from behind through Lovenkrands and Buffel to draw 2-2 before going out on away goals 1-1 in El Madrigal to the side that then beat Inter Milan before going out in the semis to Arsenal. Going back to best player it is worth quoting Mr HH: "Alfredo Di Stéfano was the greatest footballer of all time - far better even than Pelé. He was, simultaneously, the anchor in defence, the playmaker in midfield, and the most dangerous marksman in attack." Di Stefano played in all five of Real Madrid's European Cup wining sides of 1955-1960 and was 37 when Real played at Ibrox in the First Round of the European Cup in 1963; but he made the pass to Gento who tore past Bobby Shearer and crossed for Puskas to score the only goal of the match.
  14. Unless we have documentary evidence that Nottingham Forrest contacted Warburton &Co before their "resignations" were accepted; then it's hard to see how we can make a case for compensation. The agent simply asking the question on a hypothetical basis won't be near enough.
  15. Getting into the Europa League Group stages from Q1 will be a massive task; unless there is a major step up in the quality of the squad between now and 29 June.
  16. No offence but if you check the bottom right of the colour one it was the SCOTTISH DAILY EXPRESS I'll check out the black and white ones for clues but I think they might have been the Express as well.
  17. Jorge Paulo Agostinho Mendes was born in Lisbon, on January 7, 1966. Agent FIFA, founded Gestifute, Career Management of Sports Professionals, in 1996. In 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015 was considered the Best Agent in the World, a prize awarded by Globe Soccer, as a result of the votes gathered from the other entrepreneurs recognized by FIFA (EFAA) and European Football Clubs (ECA) . Jorge Mendes has played some of the biggest transfers in the world over the years. http://gestifute.com/#jorgemendes
  18. I think there might be quite lot of truth in your assessment. One explanation would certainly be that it was cheaper to let them go with no compensation than to pay them off, if that was what the Board intended. If they were going anyway, as now seems pretty certain, then they sold the Board a massive dummy. If you are correct then Machiavelli would have been proud of their agent.
  19. According to the Accounts we made an operating profit of £294,000 but a loss on "ordinary activities" of £278,000 (£238,000 net of £40,000 tax recovery) after "other charges" including a small loss on disposal of assets and player registrations. However, the main difference is the £451,000 "other charges", which is all the more reason why some explanation of that figure would be helpful.
  20. Ok Jose, I'm sure theez a way
  21. Good questions and good answers; however it was not clear given what he said about compensation why Rangers agreed to let W&Co go without compensation.
  22. Yep, reserve to Jimmy Millar.
  23. I don't recollect any of them playing in the first team but they may have made an occasional appearance. Bobby? Vint was an outside left if IIRC. You can pretty much judge the players positions from their places in the picture e.g. aside from Shearer and Caldow, the first team forward line of Henderson, McMillan, Millar, Brand and Wilson are seated R to L in the front row.
  24. Like this perhaps..... Again, you can see the holes from the drawing pins!
