Can you imagine this board, resplendent in suits and Rangers ties, taking this manager to task on football matters? Ally will politely say - show us your medals - and then be charming and entertaining as people thrill at meeting a legend. If anybody from the board meets him, it should be someone who will probe him on his football philosophy, someone who will insist on detailed answers instead of bluster, and someone who won't be star-struck. To be honest, though, it's not a good idea. When people get to meet and know the manager, they will probably find it harder to demand his sacking. I think it would be better if they introduced another rule for their constitution - members of the board should not be formally introduced to players and management.

There is absolutely no need for this fan board to meet the team manager. There is every need to demand answers from those who are running the club, and this is what it should be concentrating on. Forlan from this forum seems to be up to speed with the financial and governance issues and perhaps he should lead on these matters. I'm confident that he will ask the questions that others would never dare to.

Regardless of what has happened before, the SFA should be demanding answers. If the club is trying to duck the issue, the SFA has the power to make sure that it can't.

What are the chances? Rangers will play . . . Celtic. Or maybe, Celtic will play . . . Rangers.

Strachan pleads for league 'engineering' to get Rangers...
Hildy replied to ian1964's topic in Rangers Chat
This is a shocking idea but of course within the context of Scottish football, it's quite normal. What credible business would sponsor a product that had openly abandoned sporting integrity? -
When the inaugural meeting contains a suggestion that the club should not meet other fan groups, the cynicism that many feel towards this body seems to be fully justified. What was the response to such an absurd suggestion?

What is the position of the club regarding meeting with fan groups other than this fan board?

Some fans declare optimism every time we face Celtic. They'd fancy Lee McCulloch to beat Celtic on his own. They cannot see anything other than Rangers winning and are incapable of actually discussing the contest meaningfully. I think they do this for one reason only. To drown out the noise of their squeaky bottoms.
-
For Celtic, this is an opportunity to win heavily. Their fans fully expect to win but the main goal is to win by a big margin. If it was the other way round, we'd feel the same. The Celtic players cheered when they heard they were going to meet Rangers. I'm not sure our players would have felt the same way. Realists know that Celtic are firm favourites. They also know that a bad defeat could be a humiliation too far. Whatever we think of Ally McCoist, he could have done without this.
-
Agreed. If we signed Messi, McCulloch would still be the first name on the teamsheet.

There is nothing in Scottish football quite like an Old Firm game. The tension beforehand and the joy or depression afterwards is in a league of its own. Celtic stands in the way of any ambition that we might have and if we didn't play them - our only real rivals - Scottish football would be as empty as it has been since we ended up in the fourth division. I'm not sure that we like them any less now than we did before this saga began. We played them when they hated us before and we'll probably play them long into the future, and it's unlikely that a mutual admiration society will break out. I would, however, have been content to avoid them until we are back in the top tier. I have no real expectation of a result. We'll probably play as though we were up against Barcelona in the Nou Camp by adopting a backs to the wall, safety-first negative formation. In seriously competitive football, it's about all we know. Celtic should win with plenty to spare in what will be a difficult game to watch, especially for us. There's always a fear that we could get royally gubbed, and if that was to happen, it would cause further humiliation and rub salt into our many gaping wounds.

Is Donald Findlay right? Discussing our Rangers addiction.
Hildy replied to Frankie's topic in Rangers Chat
He even says 'genuinely' when he says that he believes us to be a new entity. If I was to say something inexcusably distasteful about him and precede it with 'genuinely', I'm sure he'd be convinced he had a case against me if he wanted to sue me. If there is anything in that piece that he is uncomfortable with, he can ask for an apology and retraction. Somehow, I have a feeling that this won't happen. -
For whatever reason, you raised it. I responded.

DF says that it is a different club and new entity. See my previous post. -

His learned friend Lord Nimmo Smith may have declared otherwise. But to Donald Findlay the Rangers which visits Cowdenbeath on Tuesday is not the same Rangers he once served. 'It is a different club,' he tells Sportsmail bluntly. 'They may play at Ibrox and they may play sometimes in royal blue jerseys. 'But you cannot pass on that which is undefinable. And that is spirit and tradition and all the rest of it. 'To me this is a new Rangers which has to establish its own history and tradition. But it's not the Rangers I know. To me, genuinely, it is a new entity.' No-one would have suggested that he was talking about the company instead of the club. -
It was you who mentioned the current owners. I merely responded to your post.

He believes that Rangers is a new entity that has to create its own history. That is his extremely unhelpful personal view. Authority, thankfully, has determined otherwise, but those who constantly challenge authority over - and there are many - have found a new ally. -
Beating Celtic is not going to get rid of the current owners, and being in the lower divisions indefinitely will guarantee that Rangers will never again be the Rangers you know.

Rangers has changed. It feels like a different club. It feels like a lesser club. At times, it feels like an alien club, but it is the same club with the same 142 year long history. While I might feel that Rangers is a different club, I know that it isn't, and it certainly does not need to create a new history. For a former vice-chairman to say this is quite beyond the pale and utterly inexcusable. -
Rangers is diminishing in status season by season while we participate in the lower divisions. The longer we are out of the top division, the more we will diminish as a club. The idea that we should have another season at this level is too horrific to contemplate. Our history already has a black mark against it, but failure to get out of the second division would be our biggest onfield failing in 142 years of history. A 3-0 defeat against Celtic wouldn't be nice, but we could live with it. Failure to be promoted though - that would be intolerable.

When DF talks about Rangers being a new entity that needs to create its own history, he's not talking about the company - he's talking about the club. I fully understand why people feel as they do, and I have no issue with people abandoning the club as it now is, but whether or not it feels like the old club, it actually is the club of old and DF's ill-chosen remarks have undermined the efforts of all those fans who have challenged broadcasters, journalists and programmes writers who have been happy to tell the world that Rangers is a new club. -
I wouldn't. Promotion is vital. A win against Celtic in this game isn't.

The club is the same club it always was, and this is hugely important. If it wasn't, I'd recommend starting a brand new one. It doesn't feel the same any more, and I sympathise with and understand why people might feel this. Things are different now and we all know it, but the fact that Rangers is officially recognised as the original club from 1872 is why we are still here. If it was a new club, why would we be supporting it? We would be far better starting from scratch with a new entity that isn't owned by Mike Ashley and friends. The most important aspect of this entire debacle is that Rangers remains as a club with its 142 year history intact. If it had been lost, we would be daft to still be here tolerating all that has gone on. If DF feels that this is a new entity that has to establish its own history, it may well be his personal view, but he is factually wrong. It is the same entity, but by going to press with his personal view, he has played right into the hands of every Rangers-hater out there. Whittaker and Naismith were lambasted for their foolish comments, and so was Walter Smith. Now, just when we thought the dust was settling, DF has set the whole process back. These guys used to be admired. Personally, I hope the future of Rangers has no place in it for those people who have done more harm than good since this whole debacle kicked off. -
What a foolish comment from a learned man. Of course it doesn't feel like the Rangers many grew up with, but the fact is - it is. When he says, as is suggested, that it has to establish its own history now, this suggests that Rangers is a new club, and if DF really believes that, why is he even interested in it? We all know that Rangers doesn't FEEL like Rangers any more, and it is quite permissible to say so, but when so many fans have investing so much time and effort making sure that the club really did continue when financial meltdown occurred, this is a kick in the teeth to every last one of them. We've already had to contend with Walter Smith talking about the new Rangers Football Club, and now this. No wonder people are chucking it when former high-ranking club employees are sounding off unthinkingly in this manner.
