Call me naïve, call me cynical, but does anyone really believe that investors (Rangers inclined or otherwise) would willingly welcome a shareholder that can block special resolutions based on emotional sentiment? Were/are C1872 liquid enough to have been approached in advance of the previous two share issues? Assuming that they weren’t in a suitable position to explain away a lack of offer/take up, does the Club and its board approve of the shareholding being increased as opposed to it having been diluted as has been the case as a result of the aforementioned rounds? Will any of this become clearer following the next RIFC AGM?

Will fan ‘participation’ ever truly work? Would fan ‘majority shareholder’ (a la Hamburg) work either? For me, I reckon that the coverage this has been afforded hasn’t been all that helpful, and that isn’t meant as a slight on Stevie’s pod per se. I can see why Dave King would want to capitalise on the current feel good factor, but couldn’t this have been promoted to C1872 membership as an opportunity to increase the share block and pay back Dave as a thank you for playing his part in rescuing the Club? Whether this is implied or not misses the point. If it was the stated aim from the outset, a lot of the questions raised regarding the deal and some of the accompanying innuendo could have been minimised if not largely avoided. Governance appears to have been a delicate issue for C1872 since its inception and this no doubt partly informs why there are only circa 7000 members. King has said that he is willing to wait for an extended period to allow C1872 to raise the funds. I would imagine that he will be waiting a long time if C1872 continues to be run in the current manner.

That’s the benefit of having people in the dugout who have a real clue. Previous managers have shown undoubted nous in Europe but the current guys have a slight edge in that they have played and won at the highest level. But I digress, we could’ve come unstuck tonight. The really pleasing aspect is that we didn’t panic, we upped our levels when required and should have ran out more comfortable winners. Without putting the cart before the horse, I’d love to see what our recruitment could look like with access to greater resources. Along side an insatiable desire for success by way of silverware, I’d imagine that the carrot of being able to shop for better players must be a tremendous incentive for Stevie and his staff. Having read, listened, postulated, deliberated et al on the subject, I still can’t get past a few things which are inescapable for me. They are: Why does Club1872 continue to look like such an opaque vehicle so long after its inception, (especially to the lay person/ordinary punter)? Will this change in the future, and if so, whose purposes does that change serve? The Club requires new investment to facilitate ongoing costs. At the quoted figures, how likely is this to be met by the current Club1872 membership and the prospect of increasing their existing subscription rates? How feasible is the perceived reliance on Club1872 to provide further funds on an ad hoc basis to prevent dilution of its shareholding, never mind facilitating additional cash flow shortfalls? How realistic is the prospect of future short to medium term sustainability being met without the need for a public offering? Have our current custodians reached the limit of their exposure to risk? If not, how close are they to reaching their limit? There are so many other aspects of the potential impacts that this apparent crossroads in the way that the Club is governed which could be raised. They are possibly too numerous to list or even bring to mind here, but one thing is certain, nothing in this scenario is straightforward. As always, it will boil down to who we do and don’t trust. The battle for hearts and minds continues ad infinitum.

Excellent performance from the lads, with Tav and Scotty being particularly impressive. If we can maintain our form, stay injury and covid free for the next five or six games say, we should really give ourselves an excellent chance of success. Benfica will potentially be tricky. However, performances thus far suggest that we will be well prepared and today’s result will mean that confidence shouldn’t be an issue. We looked every inch a well coached outfit this evening. Hats off to Stevie, his staff and the players. Utterly preposterous to suggest that Gerrard should go. Constructive criticism of his management may well be valid, but the inescapable fact is that he needs better players to deliver instant success. Don’t forget that the attacking element of the team is young with Morelos, Kent, Aribo and Hagi all being no older than 23. All of these players are very good players with tremendous potential, but none are the finished article and will be subject to inconsistent performances when searching for their best form. As frustrating as this is for fans to watch, especially when they collectively don’t hit the heights, it is something that we are going to have to reluctantly accept for the time being.

Braved the cold at Firhill and enjoyed much of Atletico’s play with Riquelme easily the best player on the pitch. Having missed a sitter to take the lead, our young lads didn’t cover themselves in glory with their defending at the first goal and whilst having a good deal of the ball lacked a cutting edge going forward. Nathan Paterson was taken to the cleaners for the second goal and from then on it was an uphill task as Atletico sat back and defended until some tiredness contributed to Rangers shipping another two goals. Undoubtedly, they missed the likes of Lewis Mayo but I couldn’t help but feel that there was a lot of unnecessary touches on the ball coupled with the fact that a combination of Mebude being largely isolated and some excellent and uncompromising defending from the visitors meant that Rangers were pretty toothless. It would’ve been interesting to see if a booking for persistent fouling by their number four would have had an impact on Rangers attacking prowess. Nevertheless, a steep learning curve for Murty’s young charges.
