What's your plans for Sunday - Judgement Day??

Recommended Posts

Publicans have hit out over a police warning not to show both Old Firm games on Sunday.

They have warned licensees not to screen the Rangers and Celtic title-deciding games – which both start at 12.30pm, for fear of violence.

Many bars in Glasgow and across west Scotland had been planning to show both nailbiting games simultaneously to ensure regulars can keep up to date with every bit of the action.

But police have urged them to reconsider this decision following the week of unrest in football, and warned that those who go ahead with may have their licence called in for review.

Donald MacLeod, chairman of the Local Licensing Forum and managing director of CPL Entertainment Group, which runs many of Glasgow’s top nightclubs, said the warning forces pubs to “choose one side or another”.

He said: “There are a lot of unhappy licensees who feel they are being threatened with their livelihoods.

“Our concern is that this is now forcing licensees to choose one side or another. This would leave the neutral fan with nowhere to go to watch and enjoy the matches.”

Rangers are to play Kilmarnock at Rugby Park and Celtic will play Motherwell at home.

The SPL is so close – with only one point separating the two sides – that a helicopter is on standby to take the trophy to the winners.

An e-mail sent out to pub owners in A-Division states: “I don’t need to tell you of potential for serious disorder on the day and this could be magnified by having opposing supporters within your premises for the purpose of watching the games.

“You should be aware that any incident that occurs within, or directly outside, your premises will be reviewed by the licensing department and appropriate action taken in relation to the licensing legislation. This may include a premises review to the licensing board.”

Glasgow-based licensee Mitch Sorbie said: “I don’t think the police should be giving out this warning.”
