On top of everything else, Celtic could be landed in

trouble following the behaviour of a section of their fans inside the stadium. Sectarian chanting directed at Frank de Boer was audible in the Arena before kick-off and in one corner of the ground a group of visiting fans hoisted a banner that had the words “****** Bastards” on it. Quite what Uefa will make of that is a question for the coming days.

There was also reports last night that more fighting had taken place in Amsterdam city centre and that 15 men were arrested – “mostly Celtic supporters”, according to Dutch police – after a mob ambushed plain-clothes police officers in Dam Square hours before the game.

Eight officers were injured as fans clashed in Amsterdam before Celtic's champions league match with Ajax.

Police said supporters armed with bottles and sticks fought in Dam Square on Wednesday afternoon.

A spokesman said the majority of the 15 arrested were Celtic fans.

"At the end of the afternoon a large group of Celtic supporters attacked police officers in plain clothes," a police spokesman told the Press Association.

"Eight were injured and one was knocked unconscious. A few of them had broken noses and needed stitches above their eyebrows and on their lips.

"Bottles and sticks were used in the attack which came out of nowhere. There were 15 arrests, mostly Celtic supporters."

"The officers took quite a beating," police spokesman Rob van der Veen told Reuters. "One of the officers was unconscious, another had his nose broken."

Amsterdam police said it expected the number of 15 arrests to rise and that a final figures would be "high".

It is thought that fans from other European clubs were involved. News portal nu.nl reported that fans of Belgian club Anderlecht and Germany's St Pauli were also in the city. Large numbers of Dinamo Zagreb fans are also in Amsterdam before Thursday's Europa League match against Dutch club PSV Eindhoven.

The incidents came the day after a group of Celtic fans were attacked by masked Dutch fans in an Amsterdam bar. It follows on from trouble involving Ajax fans in the first game between the teams in Glasgow two weeks ago.

Rangers fans in Manchester: 150,000 - 200,000. Arrests: 39

Celtic fans in Amsterdam: 7,000- 12,000. Arrests: 15

The BBC reporting? Interesting you should ask. The BBC reported it thus: "Police injured before Celtic match" - for non-grammarians, this is called the 'passive voice'. We use it when we wish to de-personalise and focus on the verb rather than the subject. It's a common rhetorical device for defusing a confrontational situation or, more commonly, avoiding blame.

The active voice would be " Rioting Celtic fans attack and injure policemen". But the BBC didn't use the active voice.

The active voice is used to focus on the subject. For example " Rangers fans attack police", as the BBC reported after Manchester.

In the active voice.

About us.

One to keep in mind when reading about us or our fans compared to them and their fans, or just generally when reading BBC output.

I look forward to Newsnight specials and doctoral thesis being written on the back of tonight's events. Or not.

Very fair Daily Record article:

CELTIC Celtic fans were attacked again as they gathered in Amsterdam ahead of last night’s Champions League clash with Ajax.

Many Hoops supporters accused Dutch police of heavy-handed tactics after riot cops with dogs and horses waded in.

But cops blamed Celtic supporters for attacking them with bottles and sticks, *injuring eight officers.

The trouble began when an organised gang targeted Celtic fans in Dam Square, throwing missiles and jeering.

Riot police were deployed along with scores of plain-clothes officers.

A small number of Celtic fans who were charged by mounted police responded by throwing bottles.

Others were grabbed or hit by policemen then arrested.

Police said 15 fans – mostly Celtic supporters – were held after plain-clothes officers were attacked.

A spokesman added: “Eight officers were injured and one was knocked unconscious. Bottles and sticks were used in the attack which came out of nowhere.”

The flashpoint followed a terrifying organised attack on well-behaved Celtic fans in Amsterdam’s Old Sailor pub on Tuesday night.

Some 10,000 Celtic supporters are thought to have travelled to Holland for the crunch Euro match, which Ajax won 1-0.

Among those arrested was Barry Currier, 40, from Cambusnethan, Lanarkshire. He said: “I was minding my own business when all hell broke loose. Ajax fans had started up at the other end of the square and plain-clothes police had been waiting to pounce.

“They charged in and one guy ran up and punched me. I punched him back to defend myself.

“When police start steaming in mob-handed the way they did, it’s no wonder that people get angry and defensive.”

Meanwhile, CCTV footage released yesterday showed masked thugs with pickaxe handles attacking Hoops fans in the Old Sailor.

The Daily Record has nailed it's (tri)colours to the mast now, it's no more or less than a tabloid rag masquerading as the Celtic View.

PS Sky News running the story now with the emphasis very much on it being Celtic fans who were the aggressors and responsible for the bulk of arrests.
