RANGERS will hold transfer talks with Cyprus international Athos Solomou next week, when the player and his agent arrive in Glasgow.

The APOEL Nicosia full-back, 28, is due to fly to Scotland to discuss a move to the League 1 leaders and is free to sign a pre-contract agreement, with his APOEL contract expiring in June. Rangers monitored Solomou, who has both Champions League and Europa League experience, throughout last year and most recently watched him in APOEL’s Europa League group match against Eintracht Frankfurt last month.

Ibrox officials will now hold face-to-face discussions with the player and his agent next week. They must decide whether to pay a transfer fee and sign Solomou immediately or agree a pre-contract for a summer move. Both parties will also discuss wages and contract terms.

Solomou is a versatile right-back who can also play on the right side of midfield and is a regular in the Cyprus international squad. He was involved in APOEL’s run to the Champions League quarter-finals in season 2011/12, where they were eliminated by Real Madrid.

He has played all of his career in Cyprus with Apollon Limassol and APOEL, winning both the domestic league and cup. After 11 years in his homeland, he is keen to move abroad and Rangers are favourites to secure his signature.

Not sure what to make of this to be honest.

another right back/right mid......

Granted not an area of the team that are currently particularly strong, but I would think there would need to be a couple of players off loaded bringing in someone else. In saying that, from memory, has a few of the younger plays not put in some decent performances @ RB???

The big question will be...is he better than what we have??? If he is a Lee Wallace-type player, then he would be an asset - pace, attack minded & can put a 1/2 decent ball into the box.....yet still defend.

If he was involved in APOEL's Quarter Final run in the Champions League - then it would be easy to tell if he was a passenger in that team or not.

However, nomatter how good a player may be for another team - if Ally doesnt play him in his best position then he may well end up like Faure, Peralta etc.

Maybe we wait some 24 hours and see what the club has to say?

SIdenote ... I see Faure as a future CH, not a RB. Likewise, McAusland is a CH/defensive midfielder by trade, only utilized as another auxiliary RB by the club so far. Peralta is a central midfielder by trade, who can stand in as RB and right midfielder. Should we finally decide that McCulloch's, Cribaris, Hegarty's, Perry's and Hutton's time is up ... while the above slot into their natural positions, I see why we would look to sign an experienced right-sided player. Mitchell would be back-up to either Foster and/or that chap ... and could slot in in 2 years full-time. Just as food for though (and in the full knowledge that whoever manages Rangers will do it diametrically opposed).
