Report: Rangers bid to re-sign Danny Wilson could collapse, player has other offers

Rangers could now fail to re-sign defender Danny Wilson, according to reports.

According to The Sun, Rangers' bid to re-sign defender Danny Wilson could fail, with the deal now in real danger of collapsing.

Rangers appointed new manager Mark Warburton last week, and the new boss must now rebuild a squad which lost 11 out of contract players this summer.

The Sun believe that Wigan Athletic defender Rob Kiernan is on the verge of making a move to Ibrox, but the club have been dealt a blow in their pursuit of Danny Wilson.

Wilson, 23, captained Hearts to the Scottish Championship title this past season, but chose to leave the club this summer by invoking a release clause in his contract.

The centre back is now a free agent, and The Sun believe Wilson - who started his career at Ibrox before joining Liverpool in 2010 - has held talks over a return to Ibrox this week.

However, the report states that Rangers failed to reach an agreement with Wilson, and he could now return south of the border, as he has offers from English clubs; leaving Warburton to potentially look elsewhere for defensive reinforcements.

Alternative target?

If the bid for Wilson does fail, Warburton will need to find another defender to partner Kiernan in the heart of defence - and he could return to former club Brentford to land one.

Reports from The Sun earlier this week suggested that Bees defender Alfie Mawson was a target for Warburton, given that the duo worked together at Griffin Park.

The 21-year-old centre back is out of contract this summer and could now become a starter at Rangers if Wilson doesn't sign this summer; and having impressed on loan at Wycombe last season, Mawson could be a bargain signing for Rangers.

20:42 - RANGERS SIGN WILSON

Danny Wilson has become Mark Warburton's first signing as Rangers boss.

The 23-year-old left promoted Hearts to remain in the Scottish Championship with the Ibrox club.

Wilson has agreed a three-year deal with Rangers, and will be revealed to the media tomorrow.

I wouldn't include Kenny Miller in the squad next season.

I would ........................................... all the kudos MW awarded to Eustace also apply to Kenny Miller. Only one of the veterans who showed any kind of 'heart & desire'. It showed in his face, the way he talked on and off the field, his disappointment. Just maybe he'll find his scoring touch again under W&W. His playing time way well be limited to a sub but as a squad member I can't see W&W being worse off for having him around.

Lets say the glass is half full ATM and leave it up to W&W !? (we could be pleasantly surprised.......)

I'm pleased with both yesterdays signings, good young players with potential although I've not seen much of Kiernan but I trust the management team.

I'm feeling more positive about the team than the last few seasons already :)

Me too. I didn't buy my online ST last year, partly as boycott and partly because I didn't want to lose 90 minutes of my life watching non-football.

I will be renewing this season, looking forward to it too. There will be ups and downs but I'm already excited about how the team will look to play.

From what Warburton has been saying about Kiernan being a good passer and the fact we know Wilson is a ball playing defender we should already be getting a feeling that this team will be playing it out from the back..... Something we have lacked for many years and something I always look forward to !

He'll probably be in the squad if he's still here, but I'd rather we released him. His career peaks were a couple of seasons from 2009 to 2011 and a couple of good seasons at Wolves over a decade ago, but he'll never reach anywhere near any of those peak levels again.

He also showed a very bad attitude on numerous occasions last season. From going off in the huff at a snail's pace when we were desperate for time because we needed a goal, to ignoring managerial orders, to even arguing with the manager. That sort of shit is not good for team and dressing room morale, so Miller either needs to sort out his attitude or GTF.
