RANGERS have been urged to do a deal with Skonto Riga to snap up Vladislavs Gutkovskis after he impressed on trial.

 

The Latvian striker spent last week at Murray Park before returning him to his Baltic homeland.

 

Gutkovskis also had a trial period at Everton last year and his agent has revealed he expects the Championship leaders to make their move soon.

 

Romans Bezzubovs said: “Rangers took a good look at him last week and I believe they liked what they saw in him.

 

“It’s no secret that he was at Everton last year and there is also interest from English clubs outside the Premier League.

 

“We’re waiting for Rangers to speak to Skonto Riga, but I expect something will happen with Vladislavs when the January transfer window reopens.”

 

The Latvian Under 21 international grabbed 28 goals in 34 appearances in the Latvian top flight last season for Skonto.

 

Meanwhile, Lech Poznan are set to lose back-up keeper Maciej Gostomski for nothing after he moved to Rangers on trial.

 

The 27-year-old is out of contract at the end of the month and has opted to try to win a deal in Glasgow after realising he has no future in Poland.

 

Lech Poznan vice-president Piotr Rutkowski said: “Maciej asked us for permission to go to Glasgow for a trial because he said he wants to try football outside Poland.

 

“We have offered him a contract, but he is free to try elsewhere. If Rangers don’t offer him a contract, then we can discuss his future again."

Rangers are closing in on a deal to sign highly-rated Wolves winger Mekhi Leacock-McLeod, according to The Scottish Sun.

 

The 19-year-old is set to join the Gers in January, most likely on an academy contract, The Scottish Sun reports, but has already joined up with Mark Warburton's side in the past week.

 

Leacock-McLeod - who joined the Championship club from Fulham in 2014, having come through the youth system at Craven Cottage - made an immediate impact for Rangers' under-20 side, scoring in a 9-0 victory over Airdrie in a friendly.

 

The prospect will offer Warburton plenty of versatility, as he is capable of playing on either wing, or in a more central role just behind the striker.

 

The move is arguably the latest example of Warburton using his knowledge of the English game that he developed while with Brentford, to enhance Rangers' squad. The Ibrox outfit have already brought in the likes of James Tavernier, Gedion Zelalem and Martyn Waghorn from south of the border.

Report: Rangers' hopes of landing Josh Windass dealt blow as QPR and Brentford enter race

 

Mark Warburton was reportedly hoping to complete a deal for the Accrington star in January.

 

Rangers will have to see off competition from Championship pair QPR and Brentford if they wish to complete a deal to sign Accrington Stanley star Josh Windass, according to the Daily Record.

 

Mark Warburton had hoped to land the midfielder, as well as his teammate Matt Crooks, on pre-contract terms in January, the Daily Record reports; but it appears that the Hoops and Warburton's former club are plotting a swoop of their own for the talented 21-year-old.

 

Windass has been exceptional for Stanley this season. His ten goals in the league makes him the team's top goalscorer and has helped his side stun everyone by putting themselves well into the promotion mix. Sitting fifth, should they win both of their games in hand they have over all of the teams above them, they could go second, just two points behind leaders Northampton.

 

However, their chances of capitalising on their brilliant start will be severely hampered if they lose Windass during the January window - although a pre-contract deal would see him remain at the Crown Ground for the rest of the season.

 

Like Accrington however, all three sides chasing his signature are fighting their own promotion battles, and thus may want their potential signing available to them from January.

The 53-year-old admits he may need to consider adding some more experience to his squad in order to create the perfect balance.

 

He said: “We’re in good shape with a young group of players, we have taken the average age down by seven years, we’re three points clear at the top and we have had a hiccup or hiccups apparently.

 

“We’re looking at the balance of the squad and it is all about the balance, our job is to make sure these young players, the likes of Jordan Thompson, Ryan Hardie and Barrie McKay, have a chance to develop.

 

“That’s because they are pitch assets and they are balance sheet assets, which is the nature of the game we are involved in.

 

“At the same time you have to do what is best for Rangers and make sure you buy the strongest possible team and you do need some physicality and some maturity.”

“We have to make sure that in January if there are going to be additions then it gives us something we haven’t currently got.”

For sure the squad has to be strengthened if that means getting in older than our babes so be it as it looks like some of them are faltering after too many games.

It is all right bringing youngsters through but not at the expense of results as recently.
