The Winter 2018/19 - Transfer Window Rumours and Deals - Thread

Eaves doesn't inspire much confidence, but looking at him as a replacement for Sadiq -- big, tall target-man, who can actually bloody play   -- then it is perhaps not meant to be the title-winning striker we want but merely a different option. Morelos is first-choice, and he [the management] clearly wants a tall target-man to add options. The lad seems to be scoring well just now, and would give us another option.

I think Davis would be a good addition. We're short of genuine creativity in midfield.

What I meant with regards to Joe Garner was that he was a player who had been at a multitude of lower league clubs without ever being a success at any of them. Eaves has a similar record but at a lower level.

We haven't the money to buy successful centre-forwards at the higher end other than in 'smaller countries' (eg. Finland).

A good scouting network/contacts/luck is essential.

Davis would be one experienced creative midfielder added to a barren list. So no harm here. He won't be here for eternity either, so I can't see much reason in any "step back" mantraism.

Eaves ... whether rumour or not, he looks like an English power-house centre forward a la Hateley that might be needed to pummel the Scottish defences in the way required. With him or any other striker, we have to adopt tactics that suit him and preferrably a second striker. Waghorn, Garner, Cummings, Herrera were all misused in that lone-striker role of a 4-3-3, which time and again failed to reap rewards.

Davis

His current physical state is the potential issue that might impair on 'envisaged' performance levels or probability of getting injured and missing significant chunks of games.

Over the years, we've seen it repeatedly. Recruiting players coming towards the end of their careers based on their past performance levels, rather than current reality.

Sometimes it can work (hence 6 month loan for Davis would be perfect before any contract offer)) but I reckon the majority of times it goes Pete Tong and you have a big wage going out for little in return.

I said at the end of the last transfer window that the failure to recruit a striker who has genuine aerial ability was a major oversight because it was clear our style of play relied on crossing and that we had several very capable crossers in the squad. Both Morelos and Lafferty are average to poor in the air and 99% of our many many crosses go absolutely nowhere at the moment. So I hope  if we scouted Eaves that he was one of many forwards we are looking at who are strong in that area because what a difference it would make to our squad.

I think we would all agree this team is crying out for a tall target man. All Eaves would have to do is hang in the opposing penalty box area either directing all those crosses into the net or providing knock downs. It doesn't take top quality to do that in the SPL.

I think that's a better way of looking at it than rejecting the guy outright because he hasn't score many and because he's playing in a certain league.

He may not be the answer, but I agree that option is certainly needed.
