  1. I think there's little doubt Webster will be a first choice CB next season. If Bougherra leaves then there will be no doubt.
  2. Since the bheasts consider everyone in the papish cult to be part of the sellick family, I think they'd claim a whole lot more than that. Whether the abused thousands would willingly be buying season tickets is in more doubt these days.
  3. In general terms, whether we're taking about the club as a whole, the football, or the wider supporter culture, the Rangers experience seems to have attenuated over time during the last fifty years. Less self-confident, less embedded in its community, less aspirational, less ambitious, less united and less identifiable. Or so it seems to me.
  4. Many of us think we're busy men. Some of us actually are. Some have excuses made for them, some make excuses for others. Seems to me the RST is better at excuses than being busy. It used to be said that if you wanted something done, you gave the task to a busy man. on that basis, I don't think there can be any busy men in the RST.
  5. But if you didn't actually actually stand on the terraces when Rangers beat Bayern Munich, how could you know what "Ibrox is really jumping" actually means? If you didn't ever see Willie Henderson, how would you know what a world class Rangers winger looks like? If you'd never seen the rest of the country (bheasts excepted) openly express admiration of Rangers for what they were doing for the reputation of Scotland, how would you know what being the best really means? It's no longer fashionable to aim high, faux realism holds sway, we're 'shite, because we know we are'. Sometimes it seems to me only pedantic realism has value, or is valued, and bland gets dressed up as an excuse for aspiration. We won NIAR but lost a century of precious self-assurance. Now we squabble over shite like pragmatism.
  6. Any chance of some Union City Blue thinking. Another aspiring Trust member who invested so much time and effort promoting the virtues of that organisation and what he was trying to do. Since when the silence has been impeccable.
  7. David Murray's tenure at Rangers has certainly been Orwellian ..... utopian promise marred and ultimately destroyed by deception and self-serving egotism.
  8. With respect, I'm not talking about kamikaze football. None of the Rangers teams I mentioned played kamikaze football.
  9. Actually mate, it's just because we haven't been nearly good enough in any department. Even when Murray and Smith were waving the chequebook. I think back to watching us being humiliated by Juventus and realising we weren't even close and how they were playing a different game altogether from us. We can't become the best on demand but we can start by wanting to be better than we are, rather than being content we're better than we were.
  10. There's a real danger in putting all criticisms down to sour grapes though SA. There will always be comments spawned by jealousy or rivalry but our own opinions should count for more ..... and should be as honest as possible. So although the anti-football jibe was motivated by whatever pissed off Barcelona, the fact is that it was as far from the football I want to see from Rangers as I can imagine. I endured it rather than watched it and it was fukking rank awful, close to embarrassing. I don't care how much money Barcelona have, no Rangers team should serve that up to its fans. Pragmatism only stretches so far and there is a limit to how low we should let our expectations drop. We are doing better than we were 2 or 3 years ago and players and manager alike deserve credit for that. But better isn't synonymous with best and we need to set our sights well above the current level. In my nearly 50 years as a Rangers fan, I reckon the current team is struggling to come up to average and is nowhere near the standard of the best Rangers teams I watched before the Murray era (the money era). You'll forgive me if I share some sentiments with wabash because I also stood and watched Jimmy Millar, Ralph Brand, Eric Caldow, Bobby Shearer, Davie Wilson, Willie Henderson, John Greig, Ian MacMillan, Jimmy Baxter ..... every one of whom was light years better than their counterparts today. IMO, only McGregor bears comparison in goals. And that's not just old-fartism SA, it's a cast iron fact from nearly half a century ago. I'd like to see that again at Ibrox before I head skywards and I don't see it happening if we remain a club that is so afraid of failure that we can't bring ourselves to succeed.
  11. Actually, not unusually for this forum, I think we all basically agree with each other on the subject of Walter Smith. In the most part, it's only our confidence or otherwise in the future that varies from poster to poster.
  12. Well if your going to take your line of sight from a thread on FF you probably deserve all the disappointment coming your way. I certainly wouldn't opt for a foreign manager but it's unacceptable on every level to categorically state that WS is the only one who could do a job for Rangers. Whatever the new owner (if there is one) decides, I believe Walter will be gone in no more than two seasons of his own volition - what will we do then, close the doors for good because no one but Walter can do the job? I've heard that line all my life and I've learned how wrong it always is.
  13. Without question eh? I'd see no point to anything if I couldn't at least question it, even Walter Smith. It never fails to impress me how many people see the world in absolute terms.
  14. I'd like to see a better manager, as I'd like to see better players. I can see weaknesses in Smith as a manager, most people can. But I can also see strengths and there simply is no denying where we are today, so it would be daft not to give credit where it's due. As for next year, it isn't only about taking a view on Smith compared with alternatives (who can't yet be identified). It's also about both the potential and the risk of new owners. About the possible benefits of continuity or the prospect of a fresh start. All sorts of stuff.
  15. Going by what I saw on Sunday, no one needs to be more aware of the wake up call than Kenny Miller. Barn doors and banjos come to mind.
  16. I'll echo that. I'll be content if he stays for one more season but I suspect it will be otherwise.
  17. Perhaps it's the 13 point lead that has turned opinion about Walter. He's a really great guy, a committed Rangers man and he's achieved some amazing things as our manager. I think the world of him, his composure, his dignity, his loyalty. I haven't posted here that he's tactically poor and not pro-active - but neither would I be posting that he's a tactical genius or that he's highly pro-active. He's good in parts, effective under certain circumstances but I'm not going to buy into the nonsense that there are no better managers or that accepting the virtues of a better manager is somehow being overly critical of Smith. No one has turned on the club in the last few days and it's hard to see where you pull that one from. I've got no particular track record of agreeing with wabash but I see nothing unreasonable about his first post on this thread - the one I replied to. His second post on the other hand is less composed as a result of your own knee jerk. Kinda like the observation below that a better manager must be a highly paid foreigner, something only the poster actually suggests.
  18. I think it must be possible to accept the truth of what you say without appearing disloyal or ungrateful to Walter for the good things he has achieved at Rangers. The caveat here of course is that our financial limitations might make it impossible for a more proactive manager to achieve any more than Walter.
  19. I'm not sure there are any others with leverage. An opinion yes, but actual leverage, doubtful. I think the board may have tried to use the bank as leverage on Murray but that didn't work. I'm convinced the bogie man is still out their, alive and well and sitting in an Edinburgh office.
  20. The whole affair is looking like another master stroke by the Great Manipulator.
  21. It might only be Ellis involved in the purchase of Rangers shares but there could well be other investors involved in any subsequent property deals. Unfortunately the effective ownership of companies can be an exceedingly complicated arrangement.
  22. Sorry mate, couldn't resist it. I'm just being cheeky and wouldn't expect anyone to reveal their real name in open forum? However, since you more or less offered, I thought I would test your resolve. So how exactly does this work .... finding your name easily enough?:fish:
  23. What is your real name?
  24. We certainly need innovative thinking, especially on the commercial side of things, but we also need the people to put these ideas into practice. We've had neither the vision nor the capacity for many years and, excepting the playing side, the first requirement will be a root and branch change of personnel throughout the organisation.
  25. Can't argue with any of that. Why are you and I the only ones to have got it right? Intellect probably.
