Exclusive! Gers Chase Aussie Star Matt McKay
Danny replied to Rangers Football Club's topic in Rangers Chat
Can't say I will. I'm already trying to figure out how to watch Scotland and Norn Iron at the same time. All the internationals are on Sky yeah? -
I've noticed from the start you've defended our signing policy, citing that the old way ended up having us in debt. But you (and others) should know that the old way, under Dick Advocaat was about chasing a dream, about signing top players for sums exceeding £4M on a regular basis. It led to spending of figures around £72M. I don't think any of us are asking for that nonsense again - it's not our ballpark and we know it. The problem lies in negotiating over a matter of a million pound. There's a difference between paying £3M for one player and throwing £6M at several clubs in order to compete with high spending competitors. I can't see how spending £3M on Wallace would have led us to go bust, just as I can't see how £2M on Goodwillie would have either. Yes, we managed to get Wallace for £1.5M which is a nice saving, but the same policy has led to us missing out on many players. Being frugal, tight and trying to get on the cheap is failing on far more occasions than it's succeeding. And it has nothing to do, any more, with stopping us going into crazy debt like we did in more salubrious times.

I love it how the headline has zero bearing on the article. It should have been 'I wanted to stay, but they didn't offer enough'.
-
Hoped to wake up to the news Cuellar had signed. Heard the Murray Park story late last night.
-
How's it mince Zappa? Given it contains direct quotes from Bougherra? Quite Ashley Cole'esque in their wankiness tbh. I was glad to hear the Algeria coach today saying he will now probably not select Bougherra because he's playing at a lower level of football.
-
Was just about to post this. tbh I've noticed it in the past month - this forum is taking a long time to respond these days.
-
Well all the news I'm reading in this thread today fills me with a great level of joy.
-
Just leaves us one man short for the left wing. I'm not going to jump on the 'hate Wylde' bandwagon that has started up in the last couple of days, albeit his conduct is poor if this rumour turns out to be true. It just hurts us because he's our only half decent dedicated left winger.
-
You guys see now why I fucking hate him? I need say no more.
-
I'm still wary of a guy who's never played outside the top quality football nation that is Australia. At his age, if he's really as good as some think, he surely would have played in Europe by now.
-
If we sign Juhasz, the Cuellar deal will be dead in the water. We'll probably withdraw our offer. Fact is we'll have Weir, Goian, Bartley and Juhasz. That's enough.

On the subject of Bougherra, here's his reasons for joining the Qatar side (which includes life story): Translated = 'I couldn't get a move to a decent team, and they (Lekhwiya) not only were the only ones interested, but they gave me a shitload of cash too'.
-
I've heard it's £3.5M. A lot of money to shell out on a 28 year old defender. I hope he's value for money.
-
I think there would be an outside chance of us spending that much on a marquee defender if the guy was below 25. But this chap is nearing his 30s and sees us a a short term solution.
-
Nope. I don't mean this patronisingly, and I say it with full respect to you, but you're thinking like a fan and that players should think like fans. They really, really don't. It's a job to them. Even David Healy with his clear love of Rangers would not show up for Monday's training if he was not being paid for it. Quite frankly neither would I. Bills to pay, y'see, as Craig bluntly puts it.
-
I don't altogether buy this one because there are plenty of skint clubs in the EPL. Sky do spend a lot of money on TV rights but it's not the vast amounts people think. If it was, all clubs in England would be much more even. Because all would be getting the equal piece of this very rich pie. The outrageous sums being spent are by City, UTD, Liverpool, and Chelsea. Even Spurs haven't spent that much, ditto Arsenal. Those 4 main clubs have a lot of money swimming around for players. It comes from sources other than TV revenue. Government/council - the point is authorities stepped in to help them. This would happen for no other club and it spawned this mentality of vile sums of money in the modern game. Completely unrelated but it's interesting to see both halves of the OF have a promising young left winger they've brought through from their youth systems. James Forest for timmy, and Wylde for us.
-
C+ I'd agree with. Strangely I completely forgot to include Bartley in the OP. Best signing we've made along with Wallace. Hopefully Ortiz starts to impress (playing in the right position would help) and we know too little of Goian to have any impression at all of him.
-
Yes, I'm aware of this. Did McLaren ever manage Verhoek? I don't know much about the winger, but I'd be surprised if he ever played for Twente. Ok, googled it, he never played for them. I don't quite see why McLaren is a major attraction - despite managing a successful Twente side. I'd understand it if Verhoek had played under McLaren before, but on the whole Dutch basis I'm more surprised he's not joining Fulham.
-
So, if they weren't being paid, do I believe any or all of our players would continue to play? I don't think employees would carry out their job in any line of work if they weren't being paid for it. And if the global economic meltdown continues, footballers not showing up on a Saturday would be the least of our concerns!

I wouldn't write an article based on a speculative rumour m8. But I do take your point that money is the dominating focal point for football. Who to blame? Real Madrid. They signed Figo then Zidane for disgusting sums then smashed those records buying both Kaka then Ronaldo. They are the sole cause of the inflation the game's seen in the last decade. Foreign investors saw those signings and wanted to get in on the act, with all the money they had, so started buying football clubs as toys and signing up top players on revolting wages. If Real Madrid hadn't been bankrolled by the Spanish government, sanctioning these signings at such astonishing values, the greed and money focus wouldn't exist in the modern game to this extent. It all started there folks.

Without being an arse, neither of you have answered what my post was about

You know, the old phrase, you win as a team and you lose as a team. In Aberdeen's case it's you win as a team and you lose as Ricky Foster. Not content with the club's own supporters booing his captain, manager Craig Brown stuck the Black and Decker in and twisted a little more when he blamed Foster for the club's defeat to Celtic. He might, MIGHT think and say this to the player in private, but publicly hanging your captain like this when he's having a hard time being booed by the club's fans is some of the worst man management I think I've ever seen.

They're saying 3 weeks left of the transfer window, which has now been opened since early June iirc. We all knew our squad was paper thin, and that numerous reinforcements were most definitely desired. Our business so far is Spanish 29 year old winger Ortiz for £500k, Scottish left back (24) Lee Wallace for £1.5M, Romanian 28 year old central defender Dorin Goian for £800k, and 24 year old American midfielder Alejandro Bedoya on a pre contract who will join us in 5 months. Forgetting what we arguably still need, what are our verdicts, given what we've seen of them, of the signings we've made up till this point?

Seems absolutely bizarre that a player of this apparent class (supposedly runner up for Dutch POTY) sees his ambitions in England's second tier. It was strange when Bellamy went down a division, and this is stranger still. Especially given he's about 24.
