I don't think he offers depth or versatility because you have to be able to play different positions reasonably in order to do that. The old Whittaker was like that - could play CB, RB, LB, LW, RW, even CM quite darn well. McCulloch of a season or two ago too - CM, LM, striker (occasionally), even defender. But Ortiz struggles (bar the match V Motherwell where the whole team played well) to do anything of note. And I don't blame him for any of this - I blame our circumstances for making signings of that standard. There's nothing about Ortiz which makes me see him as any better than Capucho.
-
No, it's based on the fact that for his first 4 or 5 matches he couldn't cross, beat a man, or show pace. I wasn't comparing him to anyone or any standard. He got played on the right and fair play to the lad he did look a bit better, a bit more confident and ran at a player or two, which pleased me greatly. That was him on the right against Motherwell iirc. But then he was on the right again against Maribor and was utterly horrible. I apologise if I insulted your opinion, I just feel very strongly that certain signings we're making aren't up to the task of taking the club forward. And that they're more starch than steak.

I don't know if I agree with RBR on his first point. Rangers have given youth a chance over the last 15 years and many have stepped up. Ferguson, Hutton, Wylde, Ness, Wilson blah blah. Unfortunately as soon as they get good they often get sold.
-
I mean fair enough if he actually had a job in the media, but he was fired/left from whatever rag he was with and now just does a blog. What he says is not only of little importance, but it's often appallingly written.

A 31 year old striker. Oh boy. Looks like another Beattie. Yup, we just cannot attract decent players to this club now.
-
How many times Tumshie, and everyone else. We got into that financial mess because we competed with top clubs for top players - way beyond our means. We spent millions on players who were capable at higher levels than the SPL - GVB, Reyna, Numan, de Boer - bordering on world class players who we chased a dream in signing. That's why we got into a mess. We spent £72M we didn't have! Now some fans are using that incorrectly as a reason to be astonishingly tight in the market. It will not kill us to spend, carefully, a fair few million bringing quality here. Instead we're signing average players who will suffice for the league. That we haggle over 500k now is ridiculous.

1: You've missed the point. In fact, quite a few of you have. 2: You're clearly seeing a different Ortiz to the one that's actually playing. I have nothing against him but he's a poor signing, and a symptom of our current lack of decent signings and personnel. Well capable of handling what the SPL throws at him? I don't mean to be rude but you're talking rot.
-
Shouldn't that be 'If Danny hopes'...? I never actually believed we'd spend the money we need to - remember that Record story from Traynor saying Whyte had given Ally 15M quid and some on here believed it? Hence the problem. I hope this isn't over your head as well.
-
Evening Times front cover said we're in for a striker. Who?
-
I think the squad was out of its depth in 3 out of 4 European matches. Whyte hasn't given the funds to sign the quality of player we need for that level.
-
Ok, first off, I am absolutely not blaming Ortiz for our dismal European displays, but for me he's been a symptom of our failings. Quite simply we've been atrocious in the transfer market for a long time now. In order to fix this ailing squad we needed Craig Whyte to put his money where his mouth was, and cough up £15M for a serious squad injection. A couple of £3M players, 3 £2M players, and a few squad players - and if we were lucky, another top quality £4M player like Jelavic. This squad needed more Davises, Naismiths and McGregors. Not more Edus, McCullochs and Broadfoots. I will admit Wallace seems like a decent signing, but that he's our marquee signing (unless you count Bartley) of the summer shows how little cash we have actually spent (plus we've received £1.7M for Bougherra). If you spend half millions all the time, that's the quality of player you'll get. A Sasa Papac. An honest enough player but your team will struggle at higher levels with 5 or more of them in it. The reason Rangers are struggling in Europe is because our squad is utterly shite at that level - it's decent enough for the SPL where teams outside the OF cannot afford much more than about £100k on a single player. But try it against a similar level team from another nation and we look like what we are. We have 4 top players (Davis, Jelavic etc), a few decent-good players (Lafferty, Wallace, maybe Goian), and the rest are average. Add to that a rookie management team and an owner who doesn't seem to be spending the money we were promised and it's easy to see why, outwith of the backwater piss league that is the SPL, we'll struggle. I saw Ally has said he cannot see a Scottish side making the CL group stage for some time. Sadly, that looks to be true.
-
Longer he remains offline, the better. I've read him occasionally, no better than some of the rambles I read on here. A lot worse, quite honestly.
-
But also we didn't play particularly well. We looked technically inept, as we have done for some time.
-
Jelavic is a major culprit this season. He is blowing big chances - yes, he's getting into the right positions but his finishing is anything but clinical.
-
Gribz, you're more than onto something. I've been posting since this regime started that Kenny and Durrant were not adequate coaching staff - indeed, last night seeing Kenny standing there looking like a total clueless fool with his arms hanging by his side staring gormlessly into the abyss was one of the most depressing things I've seen this season. I advocated Wilkins from the start, and I have no doubt if he'd been approached he'd have jumped at the chance. I have no complaints about Ally - my only reservation thus far has been his manlove for Whittaker. Otherwise he's doing as well as he can in trying circumstances. But the team behind him just isn't good enough. It's shite, if I'm honest. Good enough for the utter dirge that is the SPL, which let's face it, is becoming worse with every passing season. But at any level higher, we're out of our depth. To lose to Maribor was pathetic - add to the inadequate coaching staff the fact that, yes we have about 15 players injured, but the players we have overall are a pretty mediocre squad. We have only 5 good players, Shagger, Naismith, Davis, Jelavic and maybe Wallace. The rest are either utterly inconsistent (Lafferty) or absolutely shite (Edu, Broadfoot). Add to this our utter uselessness at the moment in front of goal (and I include Jelavic especially in this) and there are a lot of things wrong. Meh, Scottish football is a joke.
-
He seems to have faded from the first team completely. I know he's on the 'injured' list, but I would not be shocked if this is the start of the end of him playing for the first team. We have Goian, Perry, Bartley, Bocanegra - Weir isn't desperately needed anymore. Not even as a squad player. I'd be surprise to see him feature again, and reckon he may change over to coaching staff within a few months.
-
Maybe he told you what you wanted to hear Vlad. Airing dirty laundry like this is hardly the way to go about things.
-
I'm not exactly buzzing for this Fondre guy. But that's 2 'marquee' strikers we've missed out on in Hemed and Goodwillie, and time is running out.
-
I'm actually surprised they threw this out. Given they felt like trawling through the archives for a yellow card Whittaker received while on Scotland duty to back up their case for banning him for club, nothing would surprise me.
-
It would be 'right' to play Perry, but the hullabaloo about Bocanegra's visa/permit suggests it's unlikely he won't play tomorrow.
-
An extremely weak reply.
-
Still some way to go before he is the final article, but shows plenty of potential. I think he was badly advised and now it's good to see it all solved and we can move on.

Add Kris Boyd to that and a nuke will go off.
