Its a saving face exercise... Their fans won't be happy if they're perceived to let Shankland go without a fight, so offering him a contract, the biggest contract they can, shows they've put up a fight. They can then blame Shankland for refusing to sign and wanting to leave if he goes

I think we're in line for another Summer rebuild with the amount of contracts that again are coming to an end. Hopefully this time we have the right people behind the scenes making the plans

Reading between the lines, I personally think we'll only spend if its our absolute first choice signing, otherwise we'll plug that gap with a loan until summer. I also think we have a number of players lined up to go after but we're waiting til the end of the window, or until another interested club shows its hand...

I think given the names I've seen now, my wishlist by the end of this month would be: Bulat Doig Manhoef Obviously a striker as well but there is no standout value for money candidate so far. Highly unlikley I know but.... It would represent a really really good January

Worth remembering that a player who sits in the DM area of the pitch doesn't necessarily mean that they are a defensive minded player. Sterling works in midfield as a 'destroyer' type player but he won't bring that creativity from a true midfielder thats needed consistantly.... In my opinion of course

Marko Bulat is a very good player, but, he would cost a fair chunk of change for a January signing
