It's not really a ransom if other clubs are willing to pay him more. It's just a lad and his agent getting the best deal. These things have to be weighed up by all interested parties. The lad will go on to be a decent defender and we might regret letting him go. Who knows.

How do you know he isn't? And if he isn't, you are aware he can watch matches retrospectively, as they are all televised/recorded. Or he can have an assistant watch them.
