If the SFA/SFL/SPL (delete as inappropriate) had any sense, they would re-introduce a winter shut-down and arrange the League Cup Final as the last game before it starts. Instantly the whole competition would have more appeal as the winner would get bragging rights for the duration of the break. It would also free up a weekend in March, traditionally a time when fixtures get congested as teams try to re-arrange postponed fixtures, cup replays, etc.

Now, if only our co-efficient was higher and we could have an extra European place (or two), we could add European football to the prize pot which would add a much higher status to the competition.

Strange we didn't reintroduce a European place when we had 6 at our disposal.

It could be argued that it raises the chance of a poor team representing us in Europe, but when you look at what the SPL has to offer, it obvious that a Junior team could hardly do worse for the coefficient - and in one case, it would be impossible.

We'll probably be down to three places in the near future so that debate may not be worth the wasted effort.

Yip not only that they could introduce a 16 or 18 team SPL and play each other twice. It would then free up a few more weekends for 1) the winter break and 2) playing the semi finals and final of this cup on weekends.

What it takes to have common sense!!!

I would prefer a 16 team league. 32 games per season would potentially free up an extra 4 or so weekends which could be used as you suggest above, but also allow more free time for teams playing in Europe to postpone fixtures ahead of big euro ties as well as allowing more time for Scotland get-togethers. i.e. give the Scotland manager more time to work with his players.

Bloody hell, this common sense thing is dangerous!

While it does seem common sense to have 16 team league, would Rangers fans really be happy to swap 10 games with Celtic, Hibs, Hearts, Dundee Utd and say Aberdeen for 8 games with Raith Rovers, Dundee, Dunfermline and QOS? And also lose another 6 games with higher teams than them.

Would you pay the same money for a season ticket which had four games less and to lesser teams including one less OF game?

It's the obvious arguments but that's why we are where we are...

A way around that and still expanding the league is to have a 14 team league and play everyone twice (26 games) THEN do the split and play the teams in your half twice - both home and away (12 games). That keeps the current 38 games per season yet removes the nonsense of playing some teams away 3 times and some at home once.

I'm unsure if bringing 2 more teams into the SPL will add anything. Just 2 "poorer" teams to dilute the quality further.

One solution is to keep the 12 team league and everyone play each otehr twice, before the top 8 then split and play each other twice again. The bottom 4 join the top 4 from the 1st division and they play each other twice, with the winners winning a trophy and the the top 4 being in the SPL the following season.

It's 36 games in total, which reduces the over-crowded season slightly and is something different, which may bring an additional short term interest, and also does away with the only playing some teams 3 times scenario.

That sounds interesting to me BD.

In saying that though, I really don't see how the league format will change/improve the quality overall though. More or fewer teams really won't make a difference if the game is fundamentally flawed in its organisation per se.
