We have to make sure we get into their league first before splashing whatever cash we have.We are getting these guys for nothing other than a wage, and if we let go another three or four players then with what has already gone, we should be able to handle three or four new guys. Why can we not for once look further than the end of our nose and try to sign players with a view to beyond the following season? Do you really think he is going to be the difference between us winning it or not? With the resources we have already spent we should be walking the league with the squad we already have. 'Splash whatever cash we have'. When we get back to the premiership then the board can justify buying some quality, but we have to get there first. As for youth, how much more do we need - Gasparotto, McLeod, Crawford, Aird, MacKay, Gallagher, etc. - all being brought forward and will be ready for the Premiership? Really, nothing else is more important right now - not the standard of football, the board crap, the fan infighting, nothing - other than us getting back to the Premiership. Looks like McCoist is in a lose-lose situation here. If signs the player, it is a bad player anyway. If he signs a player on a 3-year deal, it is too long, as the player he signs sure isn't good enough to get us forward and into Europe et al. Not least when people don't rate the player. The manager admits he has followed 28-year-old McGregor’s progress for a number of years after his move from Cowdenbeath to the Buddies in July 2010. The powerful stopper came up against Walter Smith’s title-winning Rangers side on two occasions in 2010/11 and on his first visit to Ibrox on April 16 that season he scored in a 2-1 defeat with Sasa Papac and Steven Whittaker on target for the Light Blues. Two cruciate injuries then halted his career but after a frustrating two-year spell in which he featured in just 12 games he returned to Danny Lennon’s side in 2013/14 and was back to his best as he made 35 appearances in total and produced the type of form which has impressed the coaching staff at Murray Park. McCoist, speaking exclusively to RangersTV, said: “Darren is a player Kenny, myself and Ian have always liked and appreciated. He’s a very wholehearted, committed, solid defender who is quick. “He's had a little bit of a tough time and he was very unlucky with a couple of injuries he picked up at St Mirren. “I remember him scoring here at Ibrox which we won’t hold against him but he’s a very, very quick defender and he’s obviously got over his injuries. “He played in nearly 40 games for St Mirren last year and we just feel he’ll be a good acquisition for the squad. “I went to watch St Mirren a good number of times last year and Darren was certainly one of St Mirren’s more experienced and more consistent performers. “So it’s a tremendous opportunity for Darren to kick on again. He moved to St Mirren from Cowdenbeath and there’s always been progress with him. “Someone like Darren will grasp the opportunity of coming to a place and an arena like Ibrox in front of 30 to 40,000 fans, it will only be good for him. “We think the adrenaline rush and his desire to do well should be a perfect match.” In May Chris Hegarty and Rangers came to an agreement which allowed him to move on and join Linfield while Emilson Cribari’s contract expired. The signing of McGregor on an initial one-year deal will now give McCoist another option in defence as the League One champions attempt to get back to Scottish football's top flight at the first attempt. McCoist added: “We definitely need options. That`s when the board can make things happen. We should not be signing players of his ilk at all and I don't see what will change much in a year. If anything we'll be more destitute. How much youth do we need? Well considering only 2 play regularly clearly we need to be playing more. Presumably our youths are not good enough as that must be the only reason the manager doesn't play them? A good policy for signing younger players is Liverpool. They are focusing on signing players under 25 and only sign the odd player over that age. Oh and the standard of football is very important next year, if we don't start playing something vaguely resembling football soon then we are in for years of hurt. We can't just rely on spending big on individual talent to carry us through games. This 'just win the league by any means necessary' approach is the type of short-terminism that has blighted our recent history. PS - You're having a giraffe if you think those youngsters will all suddenly be regular starters together in the SPL.
