Rangers could face punishment over sectarian chanting

Recommended Posts

Facts are it's not banned....no-one can show different.

It's a great song....we sing it....perceived offence is your problem not mine?

I'll say again....THE BILLY BOYS IS NOT BANNED.

Not wanting to get embroiled into this much deeper than necessary, but did you actually check this before stating your last line? We have been through this about three dozen times since 2007 onwards:

Rangers told to axe 'Billy Boys'

Friday, 9 June 2006, 16:43 GMT 17:43 UK

Rangers have been ordered to make a public announcement at all of their home games prohibiting the chanting of the song "Billy Boys".

The instruction comes from Uefa as one of a number of directives aimed at stamping out sectarianism.

Rangers were fined £13,000 for the sectarian behaviour of their fans at a recent Champions League match.

And Rangers chairman David Murray has already met with supporters groups to make sure their fans comply.

The Rangers Assembly, fanzine and website Follow Follow and the Supporters Trust were all represented at the Murray Park meeting on Thursday evening.

Murray said: "These supporters' groups represented should be applauded for coming forward in recognition of the importance of this issue.

"I am delighted at the progress we made.

"Over the last two years, the club has strove fervently under the banner of 'Pride over Prejudice' working with the authorities to impose indefinite and lifetime bans.

"I look forward in the coming weeks to implementing some of the actions that were discussed.

"It is absolutely clear to all concerned that all supporters need to commit to silencing the minority."

The meeting followed receipt of Uefa's written grounds for fining Rangers following the tie against Villarreal.

Uefa also ordered Rangers to "anounce measurable targets in order to reduce sectarian behaviour amongst its supporters".

And it instructed the Glasgow club to prove the success of its measures through statistics communicated to the public.

Rangers have warned that their fans must comply to "avoid sanctions being imposed or expulsion from European competition altogether".

"A positive debate was held at Murray Park and all parties are united in a bid to silence the minority that continue to tarnish the reputation of Rangers Football Club," it was stated on the club website.

A joint committe has been formed between the club and supporters groups.

And a statement from the fans' bodies read: "The message now could not be clearer that the spotlight is upon the supporters and the club and it is their duty to work together to stamp out the minority who are damaging the reputations of all those connected with Rangers Football Club.

"Not only does this small minority tarnish the reputation of Rangers but of Scottish football and our society in general and hopefully anyone who is interested in Scottish football will work with us in assisting to eradicate this behaviour."

Mark Dingwall and David Edgar were there and did see the letter from UEFA, according to Mark Dingwall on FF.

Rangers fans warned club could face UEFA ban over sectarian chants

00:00, 24 Nov 2010 Updated 19:05, 1 Jul 2012 By Mark McGivern

RANGERS have warned they could be kicked out of Europe if fans chant sectarian songs at tonight's clash with Manchester United.

Chief executive Martin Bain revealed UEFA have told the Ibrox club they are on a final warning.

And if songs like The Billy Boys are heard during the Champions League match, it could mean a ban from European competition.

The club and police yesterday insisted there would be a "zero tolerance" approach to bigotry.

Bain said: "The majority of our supporters agree that sectarian singing has no place at Rangers and, working together, the fans and the club have made great strides in recent years to address this behaviour.

"Indeed, a number of fans themselves have raised the issue of sectar ian singing recently and the club made an appeal at our AGM for it to stop, which was overwhelmingly backed by those present.

"Unfortunately, there are still those who ignore the club and their fellow fans, with no regard for the consequences.

Punishment "The club has reliable information that if sectarian singing is evident at our matches, it will put the club at serious risk of punishment and also puts supporters at risk of arrest.

"We condemn all forms of sectarian behaviour and we are united with our supporters groups in trying to eradicate it."

Uefa have a dossier on previous sectarian incidents at Ibrox and will have watchdogs at the stadium tonight.

The club were fined s21,000 for sectarian chanting by fans during a game against Spanish side Villareal in March 2006.

And riots overshadowed the 2008 UEFA Cup Final in Manchester when Rangers lost to Zenit St Petersburg.

Chief Superintendent Robin Howe, Ibrox match commander, said: "Sectarian or racist behaviour is a criminal offence and those who persist in such behaviour risk arrest."

Andy Kerr, president of the Rangers Supporters Assembly, said: "It's up to us as fans to get our house in order."

BTW, as far as I am aware, there are no sanctions or punishments within the SFA or SPFL rules that deal with this. They barked up that tree a few years back and the SPFL said they can do nothing about it, as long as the clubs show that they do all they can.

At the end of the day mate nobody is really offended by a song at a football match!,not one fan!,it has nothing to do with being offended,it is just a continued agenda driven attempt to kill Rangers and everything to do with Rangers.

I can't agree with that comment. I'm sure lots of people are offended if they hear FTP and as many or more are offended when they hear songs sung in praise of the IRA, calling Rangers fans huns etc.

I think it is useful in this context to remember that the law was introduced for two principal reasons:

1) because offences that would have resulted in a successful prosecution for breach of the peace if committed in the street could not be successfully prosecuted inside a football stadium because the defense was that it was just banter.

2) these songs were broadcast loud and clear around the world, doing tremendous damage to our reputation as a civilised society.

Can we get one thing straight?

The song nor singing of it is NOT banned.

It never has been.

Anyone (wrongly) disagreeing can show me where it was banned.

The Billy Boys is our anthem and a great one.

It is NOT banned.

The song "The Billy Boys" was specifically banned when UEFA won an Appeal against their own Disciplinary body in 2006 see #17 and

Being offended at songs sung at a football match is a new thing,I'm an older chap,I don't understand what offended means as I have never been offended, football is a working mans game and I'm working class, however I have maintained that if certain words are used plod can lift you so fans should wise up to the fact that it will only harm the club, but I also believe that Rangers fans are so pissed off because it is only Rangers fans that are being targeted while every other teams fans don't I can understand why sometimes they sing what is deemed wrong, again parity is all the fans are looking for and it is blatantly obvious that this isn't happening.

I do believe, right or wrong, that it is only Rangers fans and our club that is continually being attacked!.

May I ask what Police Scotland has to do with the UEFA ruling give above?

Well do Police Scotland not police matches?,is it not their responsibility to police matches and decide who is to be arrested for sectarian chants?
