Portugal international Bruno Alves has left Cagliari, the club have confirmed, amid expected talks with Rangers.

The 35-year-old defender spent last season in Serie A, making 36 appearances for Cagliari.

Alves has 89 caps for his country, and is part of Portugal's squad for the Confederations Cup in Russia.

He arrived in Glasgow on Tuesday, with Rangers manager and compatriot Pedro Caixinha eager to strengthen his squad for next season.

"We're going to have a competitive team that will please our fans and the history of this club," he said.

CAGLIARI have confirmed the departure of Rangers-bound defender Bruno Alves, praising the veteran's 'physicality and charisma'.

The 35-year-old arrived in Glasgow on Tuesday to secure a deal with compatriot Pedro Caixinha's side after a season with the Serie A club.

During his spell in Italy, Alves made 36 appearances and helped the newly-promoted club secure an 11th-place finish on their return to the top-flight.

Cagliari released a statement on Wednesday thanking the Portugal international for his service and confirming his exit.

It read: "After a season in red and blue, Bruno Alves leaves Cagliari to take on a new professional challenge.

"After arriving*in Sardinia last summer with a European Championship title won with the Portuguese national team, Alves immediately made himself available to his team-mates and coach with great humility.

"He gave experience, physicality and charisma, transmitting competitiveness and a desire to win to the group.

"An example to the youngsters, on and off the pitch. 36 appearances and one goal, an important contribution in calmly achieving safety.

"The club thanks Alves for what he did at Cagliari and wishes him the best for the rest of his career.

"Good luck, Bruno!"

The club is today delighted to confirm Bruno Alves has signed on a two year deal #WelcomeBruno http://rng.rs/2sdGBz7

Much like Pedro said, he wanted Alves as the first signing going public, as a statement of intent and a marker for those others we are targetting.
