Thanks for the info, Rapid.  I'm looking forward to visiting Vienna.

How long would it take to walk from the city centre to Rapid's stadium?

Wouldn't recommend walking as the stadium is in the far west of the city. But the subway U4 drives to the stadium (station is called Hütteldorf). You can get on the subway at station Schwedenplatz for example which is pretty much the city centre and there are also a lot of pubs and bars around where you can have a few drinks before.

What I remember of Vienna it was quite an expensive place to visit .

I always find with tourist destinations, like Vienna, that if you wander off the beaten track you find better and cheaper places to eat and drink.

Bit more Info on Vienna:

Flights: As I said before you should also check flights Edinburgh - Bratislava (Ryanair) and Edinburgh - Vienna (Jet2). That's what most of us use for the match in Glasgow. Depending on how long you stay or when you arrive Bratislava is also nice for a day or night (cheap beer, nice girls, small but nice city centre). Then either by bus from the airport in Bratislava to vienna or by train which costs a bit more. From vienna airport to vienna either you take the fast but expensive train called CAT (City Airport Train) 11€ one way or a normal train to vienna main train station 4.20€ one way.

Hotels: Honestly, check it for yourself. Vienna has all from cheap hostels to 5 star hotels. It's christmas time then so I would recommend looking for it soon though.

Eat and Drink: Same as for the hotels, Kebap or sausages on the street for 3€ up to 5* restaurants where you can spend as much money as you please ;) City centre is most expensive though. If you need some recommendations for good but lower budget restaurants just let me know. Pubs and bars are ok in the city centre. Bermuda Dreieck (bermuda triangle) near Schwedenplatz is the main bar/pub area in vienna but you find places all over the city.

As it's december there will be tons of christmas markets. I would recommend to avoid the main one in front of the town hall (it's good for a photo but way too overcrowded). There is a nice one at Schloß Schönbrunn which is one of the big sights in vienna anyway. But also lots of smaller ones all over the city.

Average prices: 4-5€ for 0.5 beer in a pub, 5-6€ pack of cigarettes (smoking is still allowed in some places), subway, bus, tram tickets: 24h 8€, 48h 14.10€, 72h 17.10€

Must sees: Depending on what you're interested in, the city centre obviously with the main cathedral (Stephansdom) and Kärntnertraße (expensive shopping street), Schönbrunn Palace as mentioned before with it's huge park (nicer in summer though), Belvedere Palace, the parliament, lots of churches, parks and museums all over the city, the opera, the danube river,... This I guess everyone needs to plan on their own.

If you're interested in football grounds: Ernst Happel Stadion is the biggest stadium in Austria (cap ~50k) but it's a shithole in my opinion. Our stadium is the second biggest in Vienna (national ~ 27k, international ~24k). It's called Allianz Stadion but fans call it Weststadion as we don't like our stadium to be named after an insurance company that much... It's a new stadium though and was opened in 2016. 3rd biggest ist from our city rivals Austria Wien (who we play tomorrow at home) which is also new and got opened this season. It's also named after an insurance company Generali Arena (cap ~15-17k). We have a few older grounds but I'm afraid there won't be any matches in december anymore.

There would be a lot more to say but I guess that's enough for now. If you have any questions just let me know.

Ouch, not sure if I should laugh or cry ?

Vienna is a great city though, especially if your're interested in culture. If you want to come here by yourself (not by club flights) you should check fights from Edinburgh to Bratislava though. It's a lot cheaper and Bratislava Airport to Vienna is about 60-90 mins bus drive which costs around 1-5 euros.

As for my question, Rapid wrote on their site yesterday that it's because of security reason (officially) but they think your club wants to sell more tickets to their own fans which makes some of us not exactly happy. We might get 1.200 now which is a bit better but still not enough. Hope they can still figure out something.

I think UEFA soak up a lot of tickets as well which is possibly a part of the 5%

Thanks for the information,  really appreciated and I'm really looking forward to visiting your city.

I'm travelling to Vienna via Bratislava.  Cheap flight from Glasgow to Dublin then on to Bratislava.

I'm then going to spend a night in Bratislava as it looks like an interesting place. Then I'm headed to Vienna for 2 nights.

I've a thing for football stadiums and my hotel is about 15 mins walk from Ernst Happel so I'll try and see that alongwith the Aviva Stadium in Dublin and Slovans stadium in Bratislava (the name escapes me)

When I return, I get 9 hours in London. So I plan on visiting West Hams & Tottenhams grounds also.

Out of curiosity,  I'm fairly certain there is almost a 24/7 service from Vienna to Bratislava Airport do you know if that is the case?

If you like football grounds you might wanna visit "Hohe Warte" in Vienna. It's nothing special though these days as it's more a football field (for Vienna FC, oldest viennese football club) than a stadium. But in the 1920s it was the biggest natural stadium in europe with about 80k capacity.

I'm not sure about the 24/7 service between Bratislava and Vienna but I'll check that.

Looks like Villareal and Rapid have both had a dodgy start to the season. Spartak have started well but lost at home to a bottom half team at the weekend.

We suck this season (9 points after 7 games against the "easier" teams), our coach simply isn't good. Also our ultras want the coach gone since a month which might bring some problems for the match against Spartak on Thursday, especially after we lost the derby yesterday as there were some fans on the pitch after, wanting to have a little dance with the Austria Vienna fans. But no cop nearly died as I read on some sites, literally nothing happened aside from a few punches with the security. No idea how we should win any of the next matches including the one against you guys.

I remember back in September 1999 when we went to an out of form Valencia for our opening group game. IIRC they were bottom of La Liga and we called them the 'Aberdeen of Spain' expecting to go out there and get a decent result.

We got beat 2-0 and Valencia never looked back, getting to the Final of the CL.

We don't tend to do well against Spanish teams and the guy in the pic below is the scorer of the goal that last won us a game against Spanish opposition (Osasuna 1985), although you'd have to go further back (Zaragoza, 1967) for the time we got past a Spanish team (on the toss of a coin) and further still for a clear aggregate win (Sevilla, 1962).
