I would be a bit surprised if this was happening in this window tbh. We’ve managed all season without a third striker and Defoe is an excellent number 2. It would be a very poor use of cash in this window when there are other positions which could are not so well covered like left back.

Glasgow Rangers have a huge advantage over high quality English clubs, due to the opportunity to sign top younger players on a cross-border rule.

As in the case of 23-year-old Joe Aribo, Rangers are reputed to have only paid £250,000 compensation to Charlton Athletic in the summer to bring his special talent to Ibrox.

This cheap deal enabled Steven Gerrard to offer Aribo a decent signing-on-fee, excellent wages and first-team opportunities.

A source has told Football Insider that Stoke City are to begin negotiating a new contract with striker Tyrese Campbell to fend off interest from Rangers.

In the opening half of this season, the England U20’s forward had been on the fringes of the Stoke first team.

Recently re-introduced by new manager Michael O’Neill, he scored as a substitute in the 3-2 Boxing Day win over Sheffield Wednesday.

A couple of days later, he made spectacular progress by scoring twice in the 5-2 New Year’s Day victory over Huddersfield.

In the same week having just turned 20, Campbell seized his opportunity to shine by scoring three goals in two games – what potential.

As an added bonus, O’Neill reckons Campbell has the ability to play all three front positions, so there’s scope for him to perform regularly.

It’s only by playing him often that Stoke can convince him to stay. He needs to know that he can launch a good career with the Midlands club.

As it stands, the second-tier side are likely to lose him when his current deal expires at the end of the season – which could work in Rangers’ favour.

That’s why O’Neill wants to open contract talks to try to fend off interest from Rangers and possible others, this month.

Can Gerrard pull off another masterstroke?

Think the following could be said about a lot more than Kamara.

Quote

Why Rangers must hold onto midfielder Glen Kamara amidst interest

According to the Sun, Rangers midfielder Glen Kamara has caught the attention of a number of clubs following his solid performances this season, with Sheffield United joining the likes of Arsenal, Leeds United, Aston Villa Crystal Palace, Brighton and Burnley for his signature.

Glen Kamara, 24, arrived at the Ibrox in the 2019 January transfer window from Dundee and he has established himself as an integral option in the midfield for Steven Gerrard.

So far this season, the 24-year-old midfielder has played six games in the Europa League, four matches in the Scottish League Cup and 12 times in the Scottish Premiership.

The Finnish international’s progress for club and country has not gone unnoticed, with a host of clubs interested in poaching him away from Rangers this month. However, Gerrard must do everything possible to keep hold of Kamara, no matter what.

Gerrard has done a superb job since taking the reins at Rangers. He revamped the squad with a glut of astute signings and closed the gap at the top, reigniting their age-old rivalry with Celtic.

Before the winter break, the Gers ended their Celtic Park hoodoo and landed a psychological blow to Neil Lennon’s side, trimming the gap to two points with a game in hand.

But just because things are going great for Gerrard, it doesn’t mean the Rangers manager doesn’t have a couple of things he needs to address. With a title to be challenged for, Gerrard needs a strong squad and cannot afford to lose any of his key players.

Glen Kamara is one of the crucial cogs in Rangers’ midfield, influencing things both defensively and offensively. He has impressed with his work rate, passing ability, tackling traits and strength in the middle of the park.

As per WhoScored, the Finn has averaged 0.5 tackles, 1.2 interceptions, 1.2 clearances and 0.3 blocks in the Europa League. With 89.8% pass success rate, 0.5 key passes and 0.2 dribbles a game on average, it’s no surprise to see Kamara attracting so much attention from English clubs.

The Finn is just 24 years old and has a lot to offer to Rangers. Gerrard’s impact on the players is crystal clear and Kamara has improved a lot under his guidance. In fact, he is proving to be a shrewd acquisition for the Light Blues. He is a player with the potential to improve and become a world-beater.

Verdict

Thus, Rangers must keep hold of Kamara at any cost amidst heavy interest from the English clubs. The midfielder needs to be on top of his game for the remainder of the season if the Gers are to win the Premiership title.

If this guy plays a similar game to Morelos then get him in.

Sadly Defoe offers much less than Morelos.
