[FT] Union SG 2 - 0 Rangers

Recommended Posts

Really puzzled at the line-up and formation, and then the managers insistence that he stick to something that's not working for 70 mins.

Not sure the 3 at the back against a defensive side with a front 2 is such a good idea when the 3 at the back worked best for us v Leipzig and Dortmund who had front 3 and came at us.

McLaughlin - Should have done better with the 1st goal.

Tav - Not in the game enough, but not sure of the link up with Matondo ahead of him blocking his running path

Barisic - Kinda had enough of this type of performance from him now to know its coming. Poor for the first goal didn't offer enough going forward.

Goldson - unlucky for the penalty.

Sands - got lost a bit for the first goal, got that booking late in the first half but did well to avoid conflict and fouling after.

Lundstram - have no idea how our best midfielder was playing right side of a back 3 for so long. Was a waste.

Jack - miles off it, game passed him by, misplaced passes and in poor positions often. lack of minutes in pre season a factor?

Kamara - can do a job as a #10 but like the back 3 i think works best against attacking sides. Couldn't find space or team mates.

Matonto - very one dimensional as you would expect, wants the ball ahead of him. Not like Kent who can take the ball in back to goal and get turned.

Tillman - out best performer of the first half, held the ball up well and found space. Good ball in for Colak which he should have done better.

Colak - second game now he had no impact. Got no service other than ball from Tillman. Is this due to teammates or is his movement not good enough. Was very isolated so hard to be critical.

Yilmaz and Davies looked ok. Davies unlucky like Goldson for his part in the 'penalty'. Wright came off the bench and had some desire and ideas about him.

Referee and VAR officials both got penalty decision wrong. How can this be? the point of VAR officials is to keep referee in the right?

I watched that debacle in the pub ( and, no, it didn't help).

What went wrong? Only:

preparation; formation; team selection; individual performances; inability to change anything.

There is not much more to be said.

However, Jack/Lundstram/Kamara doesn't work if you want to play attacking football, particularly when the full backs appear to have been told to defend, producing a back 5, with little in the way of linkage to your forwards, one of whom was clearly out of position.

The opposition had a game plan, which you might say was better than ours, if we actually had one, which is moot. Basically, all that means is that they knew what they were doing, and, to be fair, could do it. A number of their players were, as they say 'technically good', and given our lethargy, could shimmie past our players and through our formation with embarrassing ease.

Last night was 'unacceptable' and (one hopes) 'lessons will be learned'.

As for next Tuesday, we will be doing well to get a win, far less take it to ET, or qualify.

It looks like Thursday/Sunday for this season.

But VAR will fix all the mistakes!?

Hopefully not a sign of things to come domestically. I don't say that from a 'they are out to get us' perspective. I say that from a 'they are inept and utterly incompetent at everything they do' line of thought.

The incompetence is a given. What we saw last night was a demonstration of how VAR can be a very effective means of cheating too. In my opinion it will solve almost nothing.

It's wrong to single him out. On last night's performance NONE of them are CBs.

How am I singling him out if he was played out of position?

If anything he should probably get a little more of a pass don't you think?

Gio's decision to play Sands at LCB when he had a guy in Davies, specifically signed to play there boggles the mind.

ESPECIALLY when considering Borna's form of late.

Did he not think USG would zero in on that like a boxer on a cut eye?

Logic anyone?

We have a another shot at them.

We shall see.
