Postponing Scottish Premier League games ahead of European ties could set a dangerous precedent, television boss Colin Davidson has warned.

The SPL granted a request from Rangers ahead of their vital Champions League group game against Lyon.

But Sunday's game against Gretna was due to be screened by Setanta.

And executive producer Davidson told The Sun: "We have to be careful about the precedents set. We're in danger of damaging the SPL's credibility."

Setanta agreed to the postponement of Sunday's game, which was due three days before a game in which Rangers need to at least draw to qualify from their Champions League group.

But Davidson said: "Setanta Sports would never stand in the way of any Scottish club in their quest to succeed in Europe.

Good luck to them in getting their game postponed, but it would never happen in France

Lyon general manager Marino Faccioli

"We will stand by the SPL's decision on that and we will be happy to take the game up when it's rescheduled.

"But there must be hard and fast rules laid down.

"There is a danger of opening the floodgates and that can't be allowed to happen. You've got to have respect for your own championship.

"We can't have a situation where Rangers put in a request just nine days before a fixture is due and a decision is given three days later.

"Obviously, everyone wants to see all the Scottish teams do well, but I also have a contract to protect and subscribers who want to watch live football at the weekend."

Celtic went ahead with their SPL game against Hearts on Saturday, despite facing AC Milan on Tuesday in a game vital to their own hopes of progressing in the Champions League.

"There's no favouritism here at all," said Davidson.

"There's no case to answer because Celtic didn't ask for Saturday's game against Hearts to be postponed and, if you don't ask, you don't get.

Did Rangers pull one over on Celtic and the "Great Peter Lawwell"?

"I think Celtic, with the fixture list they have, are to be applauded for going ahead with the game at Tynecastle.

"But maybe now they'll feel they missed a trick ahead of their game against AC Milan."

The SPL had announced the decision while claiming that Lyon's French league game against Caen on Saturday had also been postponed.

But Lyon general manager Marino Faccioli said they had never even contemplated such a request.

"There was no point," he said. "We knew it would be a non-starter.

"It's a big advantage to Rangers because their players will be fresher and they will have more time to focus on the game than we do.

"Good luck to them in getting their game postponed, but it would never happen in France. We'd just be told to get on with our game."

Bollocks, most who would have watched the game will be Bears fans and his other viewers will still get to see the re-scheduled match.

Bu im confused about Lyon, are they playing or not this weekend?
