One other thing about John McClelland if I may. He served on at least one if not two UEFA Committees, I think it may have been the competitions or stadium committee or something like that and may have been Chair of Vice Chair of one of them. The point I am making is that he is a well known and respected figure in European Football as well as Government and business circles here. As and when we are applying for a licence to play in Europe again (probably on an Extraordinary basis, see thread on that subject) it will do us absolutely no harm at all and may well stand very much in our favour to have a man like McClelland at the helm. If John McClelland is the Chair they must be OK (or at least worth giving serious consideration) . He could easily do with a few phone calls what a mountain of accounting paper may not.

I do remember raising exactly that point at the next AGM and if memory serves me that was when he made the comment about the fans not being able to run the club, I think the debt at that time was around £65M and he said it would be £265M under the fans, but I could be wrong. Nonetheless, you don't get to hold the positions he has and do high level reports for the Government unless you are held in high esteem in those circles. He may not be a financial controller but I think he is a bit of a politician and may be the kind of man we need to heal the wounds in the Boardroom until a younger candidate emerges.

In addition, I don't think he can be far off a Knighthood.

He is indeed both as well as being well respected by the Scottish Government. He is currently Chair of the Scottish Funding Council which promotes Further and Higher Education. John McClelland has extensive business experience across the private and public sectors. He was Vice President of Worldwide Operations for IBM's personal computer company before joining Digital Equipment Corporation in 1995 where he was a Senior Vice President. He was also Global Chief Industrial Officer and board member of Philips Consumer Electronics and latterly President of 3Com's Business Networks Company. He is Chair of Skills Development Scotland and Chairman of NQC Ltd. In 2006, John conducted a review of public sector procurement in Scotland (The McClelland Report) and in 2011 completed a Review of ICT infrastructure in the public sector in Scotland, on behalf of the Scottish Government. In 1994 he was awarded a CBE for his services to industry and education. John is a former member of SHEFC and chaired its Quality Assessment Committee. He was appointed to SFC from 3 October 2005 to 2 October 2009. He was reappointed for a second term from 3 October 2009 to 2 October 2013. He is notorious for an AGM coment about fans not being able to run things but we could do a lot worse. He and Frank Blin have at least one mutual connection that I know of and it may even have been Frank who recommended him.

Bill Struth & his Retirement Presentation in the Blue Room
BrahimHemdani replied to a topic in Rangers Chat
I have the book which was written by John Allison and published in 1966. The New Era of the title was the era of European football which began for us in 1956/57 against Nice in the European Cup. As BA says, the first part of the book covers the seasons 1951/52 to 1965/66 individually. The second part covers all the prior seasons in groups and is drawn from THE STORY OF THE RANGERS, ELEVEN GREAT YEARS and RANGERS EVENTFUL YEARS all written by John Allan. The statistics include the venue and result of every Scottish Cup tie from 1874 to 1966 and all the winning teams as well as the results of all league games from 1890 to 1966. The title of the book was almost prophetic as we reached the Cup winners Cup Final in 1967 only to lose 1-0 to Bayern Munich. -
I doubt it's as much as that, probably arround 60%-70%, because of instalments etc, see my #24, GS. But the difference between us is only about £1M, not much between friends.

I think what he is referring to here is the fact that a lot of people (me included) pay in 4 instalments and because we apparently have no banking facility that money is being collected by credit card. The third instalment has only now just gone on my card, so Rangers won't have received that yet (don't know how quickly the CC companies pay over the money); so up to half but in all likelihood say about a quarter to a third of the ST money is still to be received. However on his analysis that would only be about £2.0 -£2.5M net of VAT. Clearly that won't sustain us nor will commercial revenue or match day ticket sales or other receipts. I don't think he can add up.

That's a possible scenario but it relies on us winning the Scottish Cup next season; even if, as you suggest, the SFA can be persuaded to submit an Extraordinary Application. The earliest we can qualify from our league placing is in season 2015/16 for entry in 2016/17; again subject to an Extraordinary Application.

UEFA make so called "solidarity" payments to associations and leagues as well as payments to the competing clubs. http://www.uefa.com/uefa/management/finance/news/newsid=1979893.html I am not sure if they publish sufficient information to be able to calculate how much goes to the individual associations and leagues but I'll look for it when I have time.

I believe that Craig Mather is a genuine person and that he is doing his best. But learning on the job, simply isn't good enough for Rangers and it is abundantly clear that he is not strong enough to stand up to the Board in certain situations e.g. Green coming back and Media House, so he has to find implausible excuses for both. Also handing the security contract to a company run by Green/Stockdale is not bringing it in house, it is a conflict of interest. I am sorry to say that I don't think he is up to the job.

In a word NO. If we win the Scottish Cup this season, in order to play in Europe next year, then SFA would have to make an application some time THIS season for us to be granted a licence to play in Europe next season. That seems highly unlikely given that at this point we do not have any accounts at all and the best we can hope for is part year accounts. Theoretically, it would be possible to make an application late on this season, when we MIGHT have a full year's accounts, but that seems highly problematical. Winning the Cup next season might be more realistic, to be granted a licence to play in Europe in season 2015/16, but even that would mean we would be relying on a year or a year and a half's accounts. In my opinion, the earliest we will be back in Europe will be 2016/17, depending on winning the cup or qualifying from the SPFLP in 2015/16 and being granted the licence. Even then it is unlikely we would have 3 year's accounts, although that might not be essential and remember the accounts are not the only criteria (see #5).

Wage bill 2010/11: £32.66m Difference from 2010: Down £3.82m Turnover: £52.56m Wage to turnover ratio: 62% Celtic's average salary in 2012 was £1,105,163 or £21,253 per week. Remember not to equate income with profit. Celtic's results for the year ended June 30, 2012, showed a decline in turnover to £51.34m, an increase in operating expenses of £1.93m and an overall loss in the period of £7.37m against a very slight profit the year before. The level of debt rose from £0.53m in June 2011 to £2.77m in June 2012. Not much by our standards but basically all they are doing is breaking even. They may well have done better last year but essentially it's a myth to suggest that they are salting away millions. What they ARE doing is inversting in a good playing squad but I think it's significant that they have not replaced Wanyama, Hooper & Co with the same high earners.

The cup winners of the countries in the coefficient rankings 1-7, qualify directly for the group stages; the cup winners of the countries in the coefficient rankings 8-16 enter at the play-off round; the cup winners of the countries in the coefficient rankings 17-19 enter at Q3; the cup winners of the countries in the coefficient rankings 20-34 enter at Q2; all others enter at Q1. Scotland were 18th in the rankings in 2012. So if Hibs had won the cup, they would have entered at Q3; as losing cup finalists they entered at Q2 and Motherwell as league runners-up entered at Q3 rather than Q2. Last season we slipped to 24th in the rankings so next season that will all go back one round: cup winners and league runners up will start in Q2; 3rd in the league will start in Q1.

Don't kid yourself on that. None of them will look forward to the games at Parkhead. No one of us needs reminding that Celtic beat Barcelona last time out. AC Milan have been at Parkhead 3 times and not won. Would you bet on Ajax to beat Celtic, I wouldn't.

Partly. It was definitely mooted at one point that losing finalists would not qualify; but not implemented; therefore Hibs qualified for Europe this season as losing cup finalists. However, you are correct that Cup winnners get precedence in terms of where they start in the qualifying rounds, losing finalists effectively go to the back of the queue.
