Steve, I don't know who or where your outburst is aimed at but it seems out of kilter with the opinions of the thread. I don't know many who are saying we should get rid of Le Guen, but here we're saying that he needs to correct the present situation and that making what seems like obviously negative decisions doesn't help our confidence in him. I think we are all still behind him but it doesn't mean we have to like the recent results and some of his strange decisions which seem to be making matters worse. I think we have the right to discuss it and ultimately the right to hold the good of the club above any of it's employees or its owner. I've said before, I am loyal to Rangers FC first and foremost. Managers will come and go so they don't get the same kind of perpetual loyalty. Le Guen has my loyalty for the moment, but how long that last depends on how he improves the results on the pitch. I think being concerned about not keeping up with our equals and struggling against teams with far less resources is hardly glory hunting. Perhaps you have less passion for the club and aren't too bothered when the team are doing badly, eh?

I don't think anyone is really calling PLG a failure just yet. But it has to be acknowledged that his first 10 league games have been a failure and one last minute win as the only points out of the last 4 games is pretty abysmal. We should be better than now and nothing makes the fans even more frustrated than strange decisions when picking the team that backfire big time. PLG needs to be given at least two seasons to get it right but he has to understand that at Rangers he will not be popular if those two seasons don't bring any success. Third place in the league is not acceptable for a team with considerably more resources than the rest of the league bar one. He knew he'd have to hit the ground running with the job but instead he has been stumbling. It is hard enough to manage Rangers without making what on the surface seem unjustified and unpopular decisions. He needs to think again and realise that right now he's fire fighting. He has to get the basics all under control before making his "compex decisions". I'm no football genius but what I would like to see to start with, till we're in calm water at least is: A basic 4-4-2 system that all the players understand. When you've got an in form player, play him. When a player is playing well don't drop him. When you need goals, play your top scorer. That just seems like common sense to me. Once you've got the basics going it's time to tweak.

Gribz, I agree with your point more now with the extra detail. But I do think it's ironic that many fans reaction to banning of the Billy Boys is "I'll do what I like", so why is it that when they get a bit of stick or injustice, they don't stand up and say, "no matter what you do to discourage me, I'll support my team with heart and voice." If they like to support the team, why aren't they "doing what I like"?

Frankie, my point was that I don't think you can blame the board's attempts to clean up the song sheet for the lack of atmosphere and I agree with you that you can't blame the lack of atmosphere for poor football by what are reckoned to be pretty reasonable players and a well respected manager.
-
The way I see it, if we had a great repetoire of pure Rangers songs there wouldn't be a problem. The fans have had decades of warnings about this but have not attempted to clean up their act and so the board have been forced to do it for them for the good of the club. From what I can gather the board are just doing similar stuff to what the Celtic board have been doing for a decade. How much it has worked at Celtic park is a different debate, but they are not the ones being reported to UEFA, or complaining about the lack of atmosphere and their team is also doing pretty well at the moment too. I would also say a large part of the silencing of the crowd is due to the dire football from the team rather than due to having Billy Boys banned.
-
I think you're 100% wrong there. If asking the fans not to sing sectarian songs has turned Ibrox into a morgue then I think you can stop pointing the finger at the board. If a set of fans can't support the team without showing hatred of a religion and support for a razor gang then maybe the root of the problem starts with us. You make it sound like we as fans, don't deserve a winning team. Maybe that is why the players are lacking inspiration, mabye that would change if we could get 50,000 people purely supporting the players, the team and club instead of focusing on an ancient struggle in a different country. The board may be responsible for other problems but the people who are ultimately responsible for the atmosphere are the fans.

I don't think that's a good comparison as Man U hadn't won the league for decades, so he was bound to get some slack as long as they were near the top and winning the odd cup. We're used to winning the league every other season at worst and so anything less is a failure and real success is winning it at least 2 out of every three seasons. Asking Le Guen to win the league is a bit like asking Fergie to finish second. Rangers finishing second is like Man U finishing 4th and finishing 3rd is like Man U finishing 6th. Le Guen deserves some time but he's only going to get one season for free and even then he'll have to show a massive improvement over where we are now. He has to close the gap on Celtic, finish above Hearts, win at least the Scottish Cup and preferably the League Cup too and give us a fantastic run in Europe as compensation for finishing second, for him to restore his reputation with the fans. We're a quarter of the way through the season and so far his first report card is a C, must do much better.
-
His transfer fee helped pay for Clement, so selling him wasn't the worse decision.
-
And at the end of the day - the team, the club and us. That's lose-lose-lose-lose-lose...
-
PS Whether Le Guen, does well or not, the decision to appoint him was still a good and intelligent one. No-one is clairvoyant.
-
And I think the appointment of Le Guen was an intelligent step towards one, and weeding out the idiots is a great step towards the other.
-
We don't know how serious that story was, but with about 6 or 7 injuries to a small squad, that doesn't seem the worst decision in the world. I will not condemn him for that. Dropping MacGregor is another matter. I've always thought that if you are playing really well you should keep your place, except perhaps if the no 1 choice is a world beater who has played well before injury.
-
That's a very good point. PLG has created a lose-lose situation for both players... What was he thinking?
-
No point having a great team if we're banned from Europe...
-
The thing is that PLG can't drop him now or he looks stupid. The ironic thing is that noone would have thought nay less of him if he chose to retain MacGregor in the team. It would just have seemed like an obvious decision. So I expect to see Letizi in goal on Thurday night.
-
Eck turned down the Norwich job due to lack of spending power. He reckons he's got one chance down south to prove himself to the English and so it needs to be the right job.
-
Klos has shown time and again that he is the classiest keeper in Scotland. Not sure what he's like now but he was solid the last time I saw him which was against Ipswich over a year ago. The last time we had him in goal for a good run we probably had the record for lowest goals against before Christmas in the SPL.
-
I'm disappointed at the decision but agree that the transfer request and his outburst in the newspapers probably contributed to the decision. We all applauded PLG when he sent Ricksen packing after rocking the boat, so we shouldn't be surprised that he exerts his authority here. He has to show strength in management and MacGregor tried to pre-empt his decision. Could it have been different if he kept his mouth shut? Who knows.
-
PS I don't think you're right either, Schevchenko booted the ball forward to get away from Pressley and it's debatable whether he'd have kept possession.
-
He was still the last man whether he would have gotten the ball or not. Rules are rules.

mcgregor would love a new contract/ SPL Player of the Month

BTW talking of goalkeepers, I watched Gordon closely last night and though he was immense at talking and organising his defence especially for such a young guy. We haven't had that at Rangers since Klos was a regular. -
We definitely need a center back as I now think J-Rod is plainly mediocre and Svensson is one for the future.

There are many great keepers who have played at the world cup at well over 35 years of age. Anti Niemi is 34 and they are not talking about him retiring. Goal keepers' performances don't suffer so much from the reduction of speed that age brings. Klos hasn't left as he's got a contract till the end of the season and stubbornly plans to see it out. That's probably the same reason why he probably won't get a game. He hasn't played ball and so he's been marginalised. -

BTW I think Eck made some strange decisions but in his defence, he brought in a keeper who became very popular (although not with me). There is also obviously a lot behind the scenes about Klos that we're not privy to. I think they've done a Numan on him, offered him a massively reduced wage and he's said, "No thanks, I like the contract I've got." Then things have got nasty... -

Perhaps Smith just wasn't considered good enough for Rangers, how will we ever know? It does show why they are both wrong to protest and why it is right that they should be ignored. You can't please all the people all of the time and that goes double for ambitious goalkeepers. Just because you think you deserve it, doesn't mean you do. The way to get noticed is not noising off, it's acting professionally and playing consistantly well. Blackmailing a manager will only see you through the revolving door and show a lack of loyalty to your club doesn't make you popular with the fans either. If he wants to go then let him go, I'm only interested in players who want to play for Rangers, no matter how good they are - and so far MacGregor has shown us very little to suggest he's anything special anyway. The only reason he's got any support at all is that Letizi has not been convincing. If Stephan Klos had played all the games last season that he was fit, as well as he's played before and just signed a new reduced contract for a couple more seasons, then we'd all be shouting "GTF!" You have a point there but PLG has a fantastic reputation as a manager, I think for the moment he deserves the benefit of the doubt that he knows more about picking a team than you or I or Alan MacGregor.
