I think the reason I consider Mendes a failure is that he was played in the wrong role. He's a DM by trade, but with Barry out injured he was expected to be the creative foil for Thomson. And initially he hit a brief purple patch but it lasted a couple of months tops and thereafter couldn't keep it up, yet still kept being 'highly rated' as this visionary pass master with creative quality in abundance - and it just wasn't what he was any good at. When Barry and he were together their roles became blurred - it was unclear who was doing what and it was a big failure. In a way, he wasn't really a signing we needed to make - Davis was more than capable of filling the role of CM/AM that we fit Mendes into. But for his goal at the Meccanodome, plus his other 2 in the cup and league, I'll let him off

Well let's scrutinise his signings (apologies if I forgot any) since he came back then. First window (January 2007): Weir, Webster, Ehiogu, Thomson. Out of that lot only Webster failed to achieve anything - the rest all have done a job. Second (Summer 2007): Naismith, Whittaker, Faye, Cousin, Darcheville, Beasley, McCulloch, Broadfoot, Carroll - of that lot only Faye and Carroll were failures. Beasley and Naismith have been moderate, and the rest have been successes. Third (January 2008): Davis, Alexander, Dailly - can't think of any others and that lot were fine. Fourth (Summer 2008): Edu, Velicka, Miller, Lafferty, Bougherra, Mendes. For me personally Mendes was a failure, and Lafferty hasn't been great, but the rest gets the thumbs up, even Velicka who I feel got an unfair ride and did well. Fifth (January 2009) No one. Sixth: (Summer 2009) Rothen. A failure but one whose circumstances are mysterious. No manager will only sign great players - not even SAF who's signed the likes of Kleberson and Miller. But Smith's record in the transfer market really isn't that bad.

I love the disclaimer - what a lie. It IS an excuse for said gashness otherwise it wouldn't be getting highlighted like this. We could do our own equivalent video if we wanted.

I don't understand why the splash screen on the website has images of Weir and McGregor in it, yet neither are in the actual poll.

As I've said many times in the past, Walter Smith is a much better manager than our circumstances should allow us to have. All he's done in progress us since he returned and while occasionally we'll gripe about his team selections, his tactics and other foibles, the truth is he knows what to do much better than any of us. In the past I've lost faith with him occasionally, but look at us now - simple fact is he was right and I was wrong. There is no one I trust more as Rangers manager than Walter Smith.

Wondered who'd say that

I'm impressed by the optimism in here. St Mirren have played us 45 times this season so far and never given us anything like an easy game - all these predictions of 3 or 4 goals for us are quite confusing. Admittedly it's at the Brox but still.
-
tbh Raith Rovers away is like a vast sea of noise compared to OT. Still nice to see old opponents appreciating Ibrox though

Is this just the same statement as the last one, being reposted by the official site in light of this new takeover story, or is this post in error?

Tony Mowbray says Lafferty reaction was to blame for red card
Danny replied to ian1964's topic in General Football Chat
tbh I do agree with him that Kyle made a big meal out of it, I was one of the first to say that at the time. But it's getting pathetic that a week on, him and Broonaldo are STILL going on about it. I saw something though from O'Dea saying that he doesn't believe in stupid conspiracies, but that refs are getting things wrong, and not just here. That verges on sense. -
It's a shocking defence really - please don't hold a minute's silence because you'll reveal our true colours. How can giving a late soul a minute of respect possibly be called provocative?
-
Agree my shortlist was between Davis and Boyd, and I gave it to Davis, but only just. Davis Boyd McGregor McCulloch Bougherra
-
Why the hell is there no McGregor?
-
They'd get expelled from the SPL if they did that.
-
I think he meant because it was given to Hartson AND Ricksen jointly. Which did diminish its credibility a lot. Much like giving it to Caldwell last year.
-
You're right. And as such he's had way more than 2 or 3 decent games.
-
McCulloch does the dirty work. He is the Roy Keane, the Neil Lennon, Robbie Savage of this team. He might not offer the world coming forward but he protects the back 4. It's a great problem to have - no matter which 2 or 3 get picked, there is no weak option.
-
I think it would be extremely extremely harsh to drop McCulloch given many of us are touting him for POTY. In fact Walter just won't do it if he's fit imo. And I don't blame him. I guess though, as said, he's paid the big bucks to make the decisions, the buck stops with him.

A little problem has surfaced in that Thomson, Davis, McCulloch and Edu are fit, available and in form. It seems such a waste to have even one of these guys on the bench, given how much they can all give. Davis is a driving force through the middle, Thomson can do that to an extent plus defend brilliantly, McCulloch can do lots of dirty work, and Edu is a very, very good all rounder. In recent weeks I have to admit Whittaker has hit a real purple patch, and Papac I felt had a great game on Sunday. My point? Accommodate all 4 of the midfielders in a sort of diamond, and let Whittaker and Papac continue to provide the width on the flanks. We can still have Boyd and Miller up front and it would make us really rather strong in the middle because the whole wing-play thing hasn't happened since December's Novo/Beasley period. So what do you think of this: :sw::mb::sp: :lm: :me::kt: :sd: :kb: Bench: :na::kirk::wilson::ss::kl::nn::sn: Not the worst team and bench I've ever seen...

Thomson halves Ra Shellicks saviour - Keano the pikey
Danny replied to Zappa's topic in Rangers Chat
It's a very nice problem to have and whatever 2 Walter picks I can honestly say I'll be quite happy with. Truth is though Davis is a guaranteed starter, and with the other 3 fit the problem is Davis almost definitely gets shunted out to the right wing to accommodate 2 of them in the middle. -
So THAT'S why your posts always start with a dot. I always meant to ask you that

Thomson halves Ra Shellicks saviour - Keano the pikey
Danny replied to Zappa's topic in Rangers Chat
I never rated him in the past like others, in fact I considered him merely average. And when we lost him through injury I didn't really think it was as big a miss as some. His return from injury saw his form dip to something resembling a travesty and I couldn't understand why he was even playing. But in the past month there's been a sharp improvement, and in his most recent 2 or 3 appearances he's been simply excellent - peaking during the OF game where he was outstanding. I don't know where this form has come from, but I welcome it with open arms. It does make a headache though - we have 4 main CMs - McCulloch, Davis, Edu and Thomson - which 2 do you choose because all 4 are great.
