It is thought Baxter is in line to be named as a part-time director of football so long as the pair can thrash out an agreement on exact ly how any proposed partnership will work. Sources in Scandinavia say Baxter met with Lennon for the first time earlier this week and it is understood Celtic legend Henrik Larsson is one of those who recommended Baxter to the club . However, it is believed Lennon will make the final choice and the board will not force the issue. The summit was called by Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell in the hope working guidelines could be laid down quickly but it is taking longer than expected for the club to make an official announcement. Clearly Lennon is the man Lawwell and majority shareholder Dermot Desmond want as Tony Mowbray's successor but Celtic believe the 38-year-old will benefit f rom having an exper ienced campaigner to turn to. They identified globe-trotting Baxter, whose coaching career spans more than 20 years and has taken him to Norway, Portugal, Sweden, Japan and South Africa, as well as his current role in Finland, as best man for the job. It's understood he has no plans to quit his role with the Finnish FA and will carry out his pledge to oversee the country's quest to qualify for the 2012 European Championships. Lennon, however, has sought and been given guarantees that the appointment of a mentor would not in any way dilute his own authority as manager. He is determined he must be given complete control over his dressing room as he attempts to prove himself in his first managerial position and would be unlikely, for example, to agree to let Baxter take training sessions, dictate tactics or decide on transfer targets. Baxter's main purpose would be to use his wealth of experience to provide the new manager with a sounding board should Lennon feel the need to seek advice during his title head-to-head with Rangers manager Walter Smith. Lennon will need to be sure he can work with Baxter and also that the much-travelled coach, who has never managed in any of Europe's top leagues, has something worthwhile to contribute. The Northern Irishman has already recruited Johan Mjallby as his assistant and will move to secure another former team-mate, Alan Thompson, to his backroom set-up as first-team coach. Thompson this week quit his post as Newcastle's Academy coach, leaving the way clear for Celtic to recruit him.
