Rangers withdraw co-operation with the BBC

Recommended Posts

First thoughts are - great - we've grown a set, and it's about time.

Second thoughts - all these totally neutrals at my work think it's total paranoia - after all the Beeb is totally impartial.

Third thoughts - I just hope we've got something cast in iron to make our case. Seems to me like we need some incontrovertible kind of evidence that will allow real journalists to dig their teeth in, dig deeper, and take a serious pop at the Beeb.

Otherwise, I can see this blowing up in our faces.

I hope not - but I worry ..........

If it is as bad as they claim, then surely legal action must be our only recourse?

The problem with this is that so long as they stick "alledgedly" "according to sources" or "apparently" into their verbiage they almost get carte blanche and "journalistic licence" to say what they like.

Shame that morals and appropiate journalistic evidence seems to be a thing of the past and gas been replaced with sensationalist mudslinging and hiding behind journalistic licence.

Rangers FC has withdrawn "all co-operation" with the BBC over what it said were "repeated difficulties" with the broadcaster this season.

The Ibrox club said several instances of reporting on Rangers from the BBC had been "neither accurate or fair".

It also claimed that a BBC Scotland documentary, to be aired on Thursday, was a "prejudiced muckraking exercise".

The BBC said it denied the allegation and placed "absolute value" on its "accuracy and impartiality".

At the beginning of the Scottish football season in July, the editor of the BBC Six and Ten O'clock news apologised to Rangers over an "inappropriate edit" in a television package about the cost of policing Old Firm matches.

Previous complaint

The BBC accepted that the sequence involving comments from Rangers' manager Ally McCoist could have given the impression that he did not take the issue of violence and disorder at football matches seriously.

The latest dispute comes days before a BBC documentary on Rangers, which was taken over by businessman Craig Whyte in May.

The BBC website says the documentary, Rangers - The Inside Story, "investigates the current plight of Rangers FC, and asks what the future might hold under new owner, Craig Whyte".

A statement on the club website said: "Rangers Football Club is withdrawing all co-operation with the BBC as of today. The decision has been taken due to the repeated difficulties the club has encountered with the BBC this season.

All of our reporting of matters pertinent to the running of Rangers FC reflects the high standard expected of the BBC

BBC Scotland statement

"The club was forced earlier in the season to suspend co-operation with the BBC over its serious misrepresentation of the club manager's position on violence and sectarianism.

"There have also been other instances where the BBC's reporting on the club's affairs has been neither accurate or fair."

The statement said that the BBC had been involved in making a documentary which appeared "to be little more than a prejudiced muckraking exercise".

The statement continued: "Efforts to ensure that reporting of the club's affairs should be balanced and fair appear to have been in vain.

"The club believes that the BBC has on a number of occasions now demonstrated a pre-determined negative attitude towards Rangers and its fans and its journalism has fallen well short of acceptable standards.

"The decision to end co-operation with the BBC has been taken very reluctantly but the club feels it has been left with no other option."

In response, a BBC Scotland statement said: "Rangers FC has made a number of assertions in relation to our journalistic standards, including a claim of underlying bias against the club. We completely refute this allegation in the strongest terms.

'Public interest'

"All of our reporting of matters pertinent to the running of Rangers FC reflects the high standard expected of the BBC, an organisation that places an absolute value on the accuracy and impartiality of its journalism.

"The club has also made specific criticisms of a documentary scheduled for transmission at 19:00 on BBC One Scotland on Thursday 20 October.

"We have assured them that rigorous editorial standards will be applied and nothing will be broadcast that is not both accurate and in the public interest."

Rangers' decision came hours after former director Donald McIntyre won his legal bid to have £300,000 of the club's assets frozen pending a breach of contract case.

At the Court of Session in Edinburgh, judge Lord Hodge granted the move brought by Mr McIntyre's lawyers.

The same judge last month ring-fenced £480,000 over a case by the Rangers' former chief executive Martin Bain.

More than £2m of the club's cash was already frozen in a separate tax dispute with HM Revenue and Customs.

FURIOUS Rangers supremo Craig Whyte banned the BBC from the club after reaching the end of his tether with the telly corporation, club insiders revealed last night.

The drastic step has left the Beeb facing a TV and radio blackout as its presenters — including star Chick Young — will be kept out of Ibrox AND the Gers' training ground Murray Park.

Last night a source said owner Whyte had been left fuming over what he claims is the broadcaster's "agenda" against the club. But the Rangers owner was finally tipped over the edge because of a "muckraking" documentary — set to be shown tomorrow night — about him and the club's cash troubles.

Fury ... Craig Whyte

The source said: "Craig Whyte is sick of the systematic negative attitude the BBC has taken towards Rangers.

"It has been one thing after another this season and a line has to be drawn.

"This decision has not been taken lightly, but Rangers feel as though the BBC has an agenda against them."

The club is now looking at their BBC contracts in the hope they can enforce the complete blackout. That would mean no live radio coverage of the Gers' home games and no highlights packages for TV shows.

It could see Rangers hit by financial penalties for failing to meet agreed television and radio obligations.

But the source said: "The situation has got that far I do not think they will bother. It's something they'll deal with when it and if it comes up."

The bust-up is the second time the BBC has been snubbed by Ibrox — after it was forced to apologise to manager Ally McCoist earlier this season.

McCoist was left furious when a clip on TV showed him appearing to smirk when he was asked about the behaviour of Old Firm fans.

The broadcaster later said sorry for an "inappropriate edit".

But relations between the two sides have collapsed again over the documentary, which is understood to focus on the club's cash troubles as well as Whyte's business affairs.

The source added: "Whyte has ALWAYS refused to discuss his personal or business dealings.

"He did tell the BBC he would co-operate on how Rangers have got into the state they are in. The BBC were not happy with that. Some of the questions they wanted to ask had nothing to do with Rangers or the club's situation. It appeared quite clearly the programme was just going to be a stitch-up.

"The club has been appalled at some of the negative reporting it and its fans has received from the BBC."

Last night a BBC spokesman hit back at the "claim of underlying bias", saying: "We completely refute this allegation in the strongest terms.

"All of our reporting of matters pertinent to the running of Rangers FC reflects the high standard expected of the BBC. The club has also made specific criticisms of a documentary scheduled for transmission.

"We've assured them that rigorous editorial standards will be applied and nothing will be broadcast that is not both accurate and in the public interest."

Last night Ted Brocklebank, former head of news at Grampian TV and ex-Scottish Tory culture spokesman, said of the ban: "Ultimately the club will be the loser. I think Rangers should look at this very carefully."

Public interest what a load of bull. Where is a story about Rangers in the public interest, we are not a government body or a private company who are fleecing the public.

This is pure and simple a stitch up. If a programme should be made in the public interest, it should be about why a publicly funded body feels the need to single out Rangers, and Rangers alone when the whole of football is heading towards a financial meltdown.

And we don't need the BBC they are nothing more than a narrow minded shower of chunts in an ever expanding media world who show time after time they haven't a clue what they are doing.

Ted Brocklebank I can't remember the last time I used the BBC to find out anything about Rangers. The world has moved on and left them behind. You should ask the BBC how they intend to cover Scottish football without the help of the biggest club and best football team in the country.
