The Summer Transfer Rumour Round-up Thread

And was paid hundreds of thousands of pounds per year for the pleasure.

He was not value for money. At the end of the day,he was a poor addition IMO.

Would you have said "No! Thanks, I'd do it for half the offered wages!"? We paid the likes of Whittaker 20k or the like, and many said that was insane. I for one have long since given up "valuating" players because of their wages, for this makes hardly ever any sort of sense. For me, application on the park is what counts and we can happily argue about that. Then again, wrong thread.

He was never a world-beater, but so too weren't the likes of Stuart Munro or even an Ian Ferguson of days gone by. He did his job when asked to, came to and stayed with us in our time of need, was thrown into a side of constant changes and of varying quality, but always gave his all. We all have a certain valuation of a player and probably differ when it comes to "good", but I'm still going with the above and add that he played 125 games for us (as an attacking midfielder, usually subbed on or off), scored 32 goals and assisted 23 more.

Completely off topic but paninI brought a sticker album back in about 1990 the Ian Ferguson sticker was actually a sticker of stuart munro. I still have it somewhere in my dad's house.

Yes, but in fairness, those yesteryear signings usually also came with a transfer fee attached. The ones that MW has made has reduced the financial outlay to their salary only. And I cant imagine that either Barton or Kranjcar would be commanding massive salaries - in Barton's case he was offered more to stay at Burnley but he wanted a new challenge. In Kranjcar's case he was playing in the 2nd tier of the MLS.

Both players, if Kranjcar signs a 2 yr deal, have the opportunity of playing in front of 50,000 fans next season and, all going well, the opportunity to play in Europe the season after. How many clubs are going to offer those players that in their twilight years ? I doubt either really NEEDS the money so, for them (certainly with Barton), you see it as being a final chance to prove themselves at the highest level and with a new challenge.

With these two signed plus Rossiter, Windass and Crooks I am excited - now, Mr Warburton, just get me a commanding CB and full back cover and I will be happy :D

I think we might need more than one CB. We were conceding far too many goals towards the end of last season.

And we will need at least one striker too I'd have thought

I would also expect one or two players from last season to leave because of the new arrivals

I thought I had said a striker, clearly not. I agree.

I think we need at least one striker, one CB, cover for both full backs and another back up keeper. At the very least.

I think Wilson can still become a player but needs a commanding CB beside him. But we definitely need AT LEAST one and I could easily be convinced we need two, I was already including Dom Ball as one..... presumptive of me.

Only Barton for me has the necessary pedigree and quality required to go straight into our first team out of all the signings made to date. Our weaknesses, there for all to see in the faltering last few weeks of the season resulting in losing a cup final to a terrible hibs side, should not be forgotten and the priority signings are certainly not Dom Ball, who couldnt even get into a centre half position ahead of the awful Wilson/Kiernan partnership.

Where oh where are our two centre backs, centre forward and creative midfield player? Where is our full-back cover? GK cover? The squad is nowhere near complete.

I am still relatively calm given we are still not even in pre-season however.

Going by an average of 50 mins in 124 games and 32 goals plus 23 assists is value for money for me, for an attacking midfielder that run his socks off, and played wherever he was asked too.

Net VFM isn't just a key objective, it is a MUST,... if we are to achieve anywhere close to what we want to, on the budget that will be available.

It's not just about the playing squad.

From the game video analyser to the chief scout to the first team mgmt team....contribute or go.
