Tomorrow evening's League Cup quarter-final against the Honest Men is an opportunity for Steven Gerrard to lay down part of a big marker. There is a similarity to Souness's first season, league draws and defeats had seen Rangers off the pace. Progress in Europe and in the then Skol Cup had fueled optimism. Fairly comfortable win for us tonight with a good half dozen + fringe players from the squad making an appearance and doing a decent job. Middleton tired a bit from 70 mins onwards but what he did in the previous 70 was enough for me. Grezda came on for the last 20 or so  minutes and my instant impression is that when he is match fit he will be a top player for us very impressive movement and speed off and on the ball.

Cup draw headache?

Organisers are facing a potential League Cup semi-final stadium headache depending on the outcome of tonight's draw.

The semis are due to take place on the final Saturday and Sunday of October with Celtic and Rangers both playing Europa League group games on the preceding Thursday.

If the Glasgow clubs are kept apart in the draw, both ties will need to be played on Sunday. Obviously, Hampden can only host one of them.

Should that happen, other venues will need to be considered, likely outside Glasgow.
