  1. Much as it is difficult to disagree with anything that has been said about Sandy Jardine, I cannot see that he should have a stand named for him ahead of John Greig, rightly named the greatest ever Ranger. I don't think it's disrespectful to discuss a Club decision, even one of this nature, so long as it is done in an appropriate manner. I think that is especially true given that none of the Board are exactly steeped in the traditions of Rangers FC. I recognise Jardine's fine contribution on and off the park, but it is not unique and there are others in the Hall of Fame e.g. Alan Morton "13 years as a player with Rangers, the club won ten championships and two Scottish Cups and his 115 goals (and countless 'assists') from 495 matches were a huge factor in the team's success.", Jock "Tiger" Shaw, Willie Waddell "perhaps the most formidable character in the history of Rangers Football Club. Few men can have made a greater or more lasting contribution." and one of my favourites, Eric Caldow "ONLY a few men can lay claim to having played in a truly great Rangers side but Eric Caldow is a rare breed - he played in two.". Certainly if you are looking at achievements on and off the park both Greig and Waddell would be ahead of Jardine IMHO. It seems to me that this is a slightly emotional response to Jardine's long battle with cancer and whilst he is by no means undeserving of honour, I don't think you have to be dead to be honoured and some might see it as a bit of a slight on John Greig at least. They could easily name the Copland Stand - The John Greig Stand, which I think would be quite fitting, to have the "Rangers end" named for the greatest ever Ranger. Personally I would complete the job by naming the Broomloan for Willie Waddell. I do also agree that something should be done to honour the Founders within the stadium.
  2. Look where Claudio Reyna is now - director of football operations for the new New York City FC franchise. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Claudio_Reyna
  3. Right now the consensus is the sum of zero, so please vote, you might just win this time!
  4. Pure quality on and off the park, could play till he's 40+.
  5. Absolutely take the money. He is a loose cannon with a bad attitude and thinks he is the greatest thing since sliced bread, which he isn't. The only way he held it together last season was with McCulloch constantly getting a grip on him. If Zalukas is a starter (and he has a terrible disciplinary record as well) heaven help us if those two are our CB's in the Championship never mind the SPL.
  6. It is indeed bizarre but as I said it's been like that for years. In 2011/12 my ST for the MRE was £550 = £29/game; single tickets were £25 or £26 if I recall. I think the reasoning was that you were guaranteed your seat and had first shout on cup ties etc but it was never justified in my opinion. BTW first time I've agree with DT albeit on an matter of fact rather than something subjective.
  7. Clubs like Stranraer and Berwick in the lower divisions have tried giving out free tickets with no success; doubt it would work for us except fill the place with sceeaming weans! Rangers have been innovative on family and junior pricing, more such innitiatives would be welcome.
  8. I don't see the issue here either but I beg to differ on one point; which is that it has always been MORE expensive to buy a ST pro rata than go game to game, something I have never understood. Charging 5%-8% more for a single match ticket for Cat B and + another 15% or so for Cat A is sensible pricing in my eyes. Whether football in this country is too expensive, which it is, is a different argument altogether.
  9. Good to know Durrant does something I admire Law's honesty; he's really put himself on the line this season with that statement though.
  10. Well, there's no doubt that an old firm match is in a category of its own; question is do they make that Cat A or AA? For the moment, however, getting there is the first issue.
  11. Never thought of that and I suppose FIFA would argue about the globalisation of the sport as well. They're doing pretty well out of it anyway, in 2013....... In terms of the event-related revenue of USD 1,220 million, USD 630 million was attributable to the sale of television rights, of which the lion’s share, USD 601 million, was for the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™. The second-biggest source of income was the sale of marketing rights worth USD 413 million, of which USD 404 million was generated by the 2014 FIFA World Cup™. The sale of hospitality rights generated USD 47 million and licensing rights USD 26 million. Other event-related revenue was made up primarily of revenue from ticket sales for the FIFA Confederations Cup Brazil 2013 and revenue from the FIFA Club World Cup Morocco 2013. So $1,000,000,000 from TV and marketing for the world cup.
  12. Well, count me amongst the loyal but not unquestioningly so. It is true that when you had 7 old firm games in a season Rangers struggled to sell tickets for the cup tie and last league game and some serious thought will have to be given to pricing. In recent years much of the premium has been tit for tat because of vandalism and it's time the vandalism and increased pricing stopped all round. Looking at the table, I would expect + about 20% for the SPL (which would take the ST's back to where they were in 2011/12), and if the differentials are maintained then one would hope there might be tickets for say £25 up to say £40 for an old firm game. You are right that the football in the past two seasons in particular has oftentimes been difficult to watch but I think we will see a big improvement this season and again next year. I'm not sure that the Board get it, but I think Wallace does. Whether Ally can turn better and hopefully fitter (and why don't they train twice a day every day or at least come back in for set plays & tactics inthe afternoon?) players into better team performances remains to be seen. But you're right, I'll be there regardless, that's what loyalty's about as far as I'm concerned.
  13. Don't tell us they're charging to meet the team, shocking!
  14. There would be a lot of air miles then and a great many African and Asian countries simply couldn't afford to travel those distances. But in principle I agree because I think that a great deal of the romance has gone out of all sorts of cups from the Scottish Cup to the European Cup (sorry CL) as a result of regionalisation of draws and seeding. The thought of Argentina v Scotland etc in the qualifiers would be a whole new ball game for sure.
  15. I don't know what you are arguing about on price, since you have said you're not going on a matter of principle (or two matters of principle) anyway. So will you abandon your principles if the price is right or only for Celtic games next season?
  16. You don't need to look far for evidence of that in the WC. The South Americans get 4 of 10 qualifiers plus Brazil as host plus one play off place in which Uruguay got a mismatch vs Jordan, so end up with 6 of 9. Mexico failed to qualify in the 35 member CONCAF GROUP but also got a mismatch play off against New Zealand. Meanwhile Europe gets 13 of 53. This is a great page if you want to know how many countries from each continent get places but it would be interesting to know how FIFA decide on the numbers and how they decide on who gets play-off places although it's literally a lottery who plays who in the play-offs. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FIFA_World_Cup_qualification Currently: Africa 5 of 51 countries (9.8%); being 15.5% of the finalists. Asia 4 (+ play off place) out of 43 countries (9.3% - 11.6%); being 12.5% - 15.5% of the finalists. Oceania 1 play off place only for 11 countries (0% - 9%); nominally giving them the possibility of 3% but effectively zero% of the finalists. Europe 13 for 53 countries (24.5%); being 40% of the finalists. North and Central America and Caribbean 3 (+ play off place) of 35 (8.5% - 11.5%); being 9.5% - 12.5% of the finalists. South America 4 (+ play off place) out of 10 (40% - 50%); being being 12.5% - 15.5% of the finalists (excluding hosts). (all rounded to nearest 0.5%) And if you think the European qualification is complicated take a look at the convoluted route to the finals for the Asia countries http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2014_FIFA_World_Cup_qualification_%28AFC%29#cite_note-1 So very broadly speaking all continents except the weak Oceania group (but try playing them at rugby!) get about 10% of their countries to qualify and around 11% - 15% of the finalists; but Europe gets 25% qualification and 40% of the finalists and and South America gets at least 40% and given their play-off was against the 5th placed country from Asia, it was more or less a bye to get 50% qualification but still only 15% of the finalists. Interesting to note that the comparative strength of the African (one team in the last 16 every year since 1986 and two this year and 3 in the last 8 since 1990) and Asian teams (although S Korea and to a lesser extent Japan apart they don't seem to perform very well at the finals) has been rewarded with a big percentage increase in places in recent tournaments at the expense of Europe who had more than 50% of the finalists the last time it was 16 in 1978, but the same 13 now as when it was 24 finalists in 1982-94. That said one could easily argue that Europe should only have half the number of finalists. I suppose it is based on the rankings and performances over a certain period; quite a study if someone wants to do it! BTW if we can maintain 27th place or possibly even a top 30 place in the FIFA World Rankings, we'll be in the European Pot 2 for the next qualifiers. I'll leave the CL for another night!!
  17. What an idiot and getting sympathy from it wasnae us it was the independent commitee Blatter; you know I don't like to use foul language on here but a right couple of pr*cks
  18. Good luck to you mate, toyed with making the trip but saving up for our return to Europe!
  19. The Germans rely on him so much when they press high up the pitch but he'll get caught out one of these days. How about Schweinsteiger, what a kicking he took last night, punched in the face as well and still keeps getting up. Mascherano as well, I've always just seen him as a bit of a clogger but he is so much more, some great tackles and fine play out of midfield. But Muller for me, the complete centre forward and Robben THE most dangerous attacker.
  20. He'll be not long out of bed! Phone Ally, see if he's got any answers.
  21. Thiought it must have been, thanks. I think he's been very unfairly treated but I guess that's football.
  22. That was due to a combination of circumstances of which you are aware. You can still sit in the Cub deck for £19 - £23 next season, more if you want a better seat but that seems fair enough to me.
