  1. See above.
  2. Baffled me, bud.
  3. That all?
  4. City Chelsea United Liverpool Could be the Arsenal, though.
  5. We know that. Tell us the scores so we can terrify the bookies.
  6. Clancy is employed by Shepherd & Wedderburn, a large and once prestigious firm of solicitors. S&W are retained as solicitors to the SPFL. That hardly makes Clancy part of the SPFL “legal team” whatever that term means. There was a time when the likes of Clancy wouldn’t have got a job sticking stamps on letters at S&W. To be fair, neither would I. That was a gig for Dukes’ sons.
  7. 4-3 at the end.
  8. Thomson? Beaton? In fairness to wee Collum, I think he would have sent the defender attacker off.
  9. I thought Gribz would have emerged from aestivation by now to start this. Here we go. Fulham 0-2 Arsenal Palace 1-2 So’ton Liverpool 3-1 Leeds (Leeds fgs) Hammers 2-0 Mags WBA 1-2 Leicester ’Spurs 3-1 Toffees Blades 2-2 Wolves BHA 0-5 Chelsea
  10. To my surprise, I like the white lion.
  11. On the contrary. That ship was wrecked long ago.
  12. I’m hearing Normans have landed at Hastings.
  13. Nope. For all his merits - and there were more than a few - buster doesn’t have Malangsob’s novel Arkansan turn of phrase. He had a brilliant one about hot water and frogs. I use it all the time now.
  14. Best ever. For a couple of seconds in his career BK surpassed Albertz and Cooper.
  15. Where were McLoughlin and McRorie that fateful night?

    Defences

One for the decrepit among us to grind our china gums and wave our sticks about. Another topic had us waxing lyrical about the Millar/Brand forward line of the early sixties but they had a sound defence behind them. Here’s the question: was that defence better than the Iron Curtain? Apart from compo most of us will only have snapshot memories of the Curtain. I only saw them together once in a friendly and Tiger Shaw had retired. What’s more I was of no age to make a judgement but let’s not be put off from doing so now even if we’re using the guidance of our fathers and big brothers. Brown or Ritchie? Billy was less spectacular but more dependable so he get’s the yellow jersey. Young or Shearer? Think big, so Geordie’s the man. Shaw or Caldow? Eric the Immaculate, no doubt. McColl or Davis/Greig? The Iron Man and the Greatest had unmatched qualities but simply as a football playing right half who happened also to be hard as nails McColl was the most skilful of the three. Woodburn or McKinnon? Hold up your head Willie Woodburn but Ronnie was more reliable. Cox or Baxter? Do I even have to ask the question? Must be the genius, surely. But wait. We’re talking defence here. I’ll pick Sammy . So it’s Ritchie, Young and Caldow; McColl, McKinnon and Cox. Don’t ask me again next week. I’ll have changed my mind about every position except Caldow. Have a go too, youngsters, even if you never saw any of them. I never saw Meiklejohn, Morton or McPhail but I can talk about them as if I had. Inherited memory, perhaps?
  17. The club is Genk, not Ghent. Short of cash probably.
  18. It’s on FF by Mo-trux-blu. He’s done others on many Rangers legends, not just the great XI. They should be assembled into a book but I’m not a member of FF so I can’t make the suggestion there. Sorry, the geezer’s nom de keyboard is mo_txtrublu.
  19. Another Board has an excellent article in three parts on Ralphie Brand. The author provides this for the 1960-61 season: ”The Front Five scored 130 Goals between them.Scott (22), McMillan (15), Millar (26), Brand (44), Wilson (23)” Phenomenal.
  20. If HC be truly gone, from whom should we next be running screaming behind the couch?
  21. I haven’t seen the Barker incident again but recollection from live is that he was offside, moved back onside then started forward and got fankled up with a defender. There was one move out on the wing when he appeared from nowhere, collected a pass, left the fullback for dead on the outside and swung over a perfect cross Johnny Hubbard style from start to finish. Needs to do that many more times.
  22. And are delighted to compensate their clients for early termination of their contract. But maybe the contract has come to its stipulated end and HC don’t want to renew. Is it about a year since they were appointed, sorry, anointed, chief trumpets?
  23. The more dottled among us are glad of wee reminders.
  24. Even Glengoyne is worth saving from defenestration but I’m slightly disappointed in you, compo. The elite usually have a Speyside in their decanters.
