  1. I cannot remember the guy playing so am reluctant to slag him off just yet.
  2. So, what do we actually know about this guy other than what other folk have said?
  3. I would prefer a 16 team league. 32 games per season would potentially free up an extra 4 or so weekends which could be used as you suggest above, but also allow more free time for teams playing in Europe to postpone fixtures ahead of big euro ties as well as allowing more time for Scotland get-togethers. i.e. give the Scotland manager more time to work with his players. Bloody hell, this common sense thing is dangerous!
  4. As it stands we are going into the CL with only Miller, Beattie, Lafferty and Naismith as striking options. Naismith is playing regularly in midfield now but could play up front but McCulloch is an established holding centre-midfielder, both positions which we are also light on. Lafferty could be off, and lets hope so, so we do very much need another striker IMO.
  5. If the SFA/SFL/SPL (delete as inappropriate) had any sense, they would re-introduce a winter shut-down and arrange the League Cup Final as the last game before it starts. Instantly the whole competition would have more appeal as the winner would get bragging rights for the duration of the break. It would also free up a weekend in March, traditionally a time when fixtures get congested as teams try to re-arrange postponed fixtures, cup replays, etc. Now, if only our co-efficient was higher and we could have an extra European place (or two), we could add European football to the prize pot which would add a much higher status to the competition.
  6. If we could get a £2m fee, and free up £15k p/w in wages, I'll steal a car and drive him to Blackpool, Bristol, or wherever, myself.
  7. Ideally we would see another striker, a wide player (Barazite?) and a centre mid arriving to supplement our squad. If Velicka and Lafferty were to depart, loan deals or otherwise, we would needs at least one more striker.
  8. I stand corrected :spl:
  9. Yes, they now enter the Scottish Cup. Wabash's broader point, I presume, is that the entire game should be governed by one body, not the hotch-potch of People's Front of Judea style organisations we have currently. A point to which I would agree!
  10. Easily done. Couple of starts, largely anonymous. You do wonder how he managed to get the couple of caps he has. Or maybe I'm being harsh...?
  11. Wenger has done it with the league cup down south. Teams have been known to rest key players for the League ahead of European games so I would be shocked if there was any legal requirement for the strongest XI to play. If nothing else, it comes down to the manager's judgement as to who is the strongest XI at the time.
  12. I am, although I understand what you are saying. The league cup does not have the same stature as the Scottish Cup and has no route to European football. I would be prepared to write it off to give young players a shot. If we want to attract and retain the best young players, there has to be the incentive of first team football. This gives them something to work for, and gives the club an opportunity to see what they can do. Perhaps the solution could be to have say, 4 or 5 regular experienced pros, but 6 or 7 young players starting the match. (ETA) Much like what Frankie has proposed
  13. A home draw against a minnow would be good. Give some youngsters and the fringe players (both of them!) some game time and an opportunity to impress. Also, a wee pay day for the minnows... Also, I would even go as far as to say we should play the youngsters for as long as we are in the competition. We need to see what they are capable of, and that includes against better teams should they make it into the later rounds.
  14. I wouldn't say that he is being played out of position. As is always the case with wide players, they can often switch wings quite effectively. He appears to be right footed and therefore likely to cut in from the left, but I think the biggest problem was the lack of support he was being given by his team-mates - none of whom seemed to be within 25 yards when he needed them.
  15. Yep, I would give it to Weiss too. Definately the most dangerous player on the pitch, even if our pedestrian passing and lack of movement didn't allow us to take full advantage. We need to be feeding him the ball much earlier to reduce the number of times defences are able to double up on him. We also need players to be much quicker in providing support. There's no point in passing to him when he's already double marked, but with no-one offering themselves up in a bit of space to give him the option of a give-and-go or a one-two that could enable him to use his pace and get past the defenders. One slight negative on Weiss was that he was too obvious in cutting onto his right foot. The St Johnstone defence were able to read him fairly easily in the end, especially as they had two men marking him for the most part.
  16. Based on current form itsMcCulloch for me. Slotted back into the team well yesterday whilst Edu hasn't quite got his sharpness back after his world cup exploits.
  17. Stokes? Jeezo, what next? A triumphant return to Scottish football for Aiden McGeady as he walks up the marble staircase?
  18. Hopefully they released him on a free and paid up his contract...
  19. Lennon appears to be trying to copy Walter Smith's approach when he resumed control at Ibrox for his second stint as manager. He identified that the squad was light in numbers and began bringing in a number of squad fillers, many of whom have now moved on and never really played, if at all. The difference is, Smith has the guile necessary to build a team, fashioned over decades of experience. Lennon has none of that and his scattergun approach of a signing policy cannot continue without putting Celtic into a debt situation akin to ours (albeit we 'appear' to be recovering from the worst of it). Liewell must be shitting it
  20. But as Calscot alludes to, you can pick out stats in isolation to prove a point, but they aint that bad relatively speaking given the financial restrictions of playing in the SPL. (ETA - Calscot got in with a similar point first!)
  21. How much more has actually been invested in the squad though? Say we raked in £4m in fees for the sales of Wilson and Thomson - that covers the fee for Jelavic. We've spent £1.5m on Beatttie and have no doubt paid a loan fee for Weiss. Given that 7 player's wages are off the books in the summer as well as Mendes in January, surely that covers any/all of the wages we're now paying for the 3 players brought in. Smith has said publicly that there is unlikely to be any cash for more signings. Without the exact figures we can't say for certain, but I would be suprised if our net spend is anything more than a couple of million. Sure its great to see some new players in the squad, exciting ones in the case of Weiss, but I don't think the renewed optimism they bring should cloud the fact there are a number of questions hanging over our finances, business plans and ownership of the club.
  22. Smith has already said publicly that there is a risk he might not be available for the CL should Vienna progress in the Europa League; and that this was a risk they were prepared to take. So I would be surprised, nay, shocked if wabash's suspicion was true.
  23. I would be very surprised if indeed we have not yet applied for his work permit.
