Talks between Rangers and the Scottish Premier League broke-up yesterday without agreement, leaving the Ibrox side still without Scottish Football Association membership only three days before their first game of the season, away to Brechin City in the Ramsdens Cup.

 

Lawyers for both parties are currently assessing the implication of any agreement they are prepared to reach, and discussions will resume again today.

 

Early yesterday, Charles Green said in a statement on the club website that broad agreement had been reached with the SFA and the Scottish Football League, and that discussions were ongoing with the SPL.

 

All four parties, along with representatives of The Rangers Football Club plc, need to sign off on the transfer of the club's SFA membership to Sevco Scotland, who now own Rangers.

 

Two issues were delaying the agreement. Sky are believed to want to be able to broadcast some Rangers games in the third division as part of their broadcast agreement with the SPL, and the SFL were testing the market, to see how much other broadcasters would offer.

 

However, there was the threat that the SPL may be unable to pay the full annual settlement to the SFL if their own broadcast deal was markedly reduced.

 

It is thought some form of compromise has been reached, but Rangers are also believed to be taking issue with the SPL's insistence that any sanctions that might arise from their investigation into allegations of undisclosed payments during the club's use of Employee Benefit Trusts between 2001 and 2010 should apply to Sevco Scotland, the new holding company.

 

The SPL's initial investigation, by the law firm Harper McLeod, found that Rangers have a case to answer, and the league now wants to appoint an independent commission to judge the evidence.

 

Rangers would have a right of appeal, to the SFA, but the manager Ally McCoist said last Saturday that he would not accept the stripping of league titles, which is one of 18 sanctions open to the SPL. Rangers need the SFA membership to play on Sunday, to sign the players who are currently prepared to join the club in the third division, and even to play official friendlies.

Just out of interest ... with all these interesting stuff about Lawwell doing TV deals, Lawwel putting Regan into place who in turn favours Doncaster SPL-boss vote, with Riley in the SPL board, a lawyer company working for the SPL who works on behalf of Celtic/Lawwel

 

... what on Earth needs to happen and who needs to be addressed to actually have a look in this "set-up"? There nothing impartial or objective about this. I'm not of the paranoid ilk, but somesuch simply cannot be right and go unchallenged. So who'd have to be addressed to have a look in this affair?

Normally you would go to the law of of the land and seek assistance but then the SFA have shown that for some bizarre reason they don't need to abide by the law of the land. As a last resort you would then petition the Government directly but alas that in Scotland is the SNP which is as likely to be anti-Rangers as the callers to your average football phone in so we really do not have anywhere to turn. UEFA have made it clear that they don't want to intervene in any club v association disputes and even then could we rely on them to grasp the severity of the situation?

 

CAS (Court of Arbitration for Sport) is the only body who could be seen as powerful enough and far enough removed from the propaganda to make an honest and fair assessment of what has transpired. I've donated to the RFFF in a few ways and I'm sure most of us have and so I would happily see what's left in that pot be used to fund a good QC taking our case to CAS. The allegation would be quite serious...collusion between rival club officials and the governing body of the game in Scotland to prevent Rangers from competing and therefore handing their rivals yearly entry to the CL qualifiers at a potential gain of 10's of millions of pounds. The SPL demanding TV rights for a league out with their sphere of influence would be a secondary allegation.

As I said in another thread, the shareholders of the oldco, now removed from the club as such, but still with a voice, should get the RFFF and their QC on the act and have this investigated.

I don't know why you think the SNP are anti-Rangers, Juan. There are areas where they will frown upon us, but we have to be honest and admit that they can only do so when they have broad public opinion behind them - such an area is the sectarian behaviour bill. I know the focus was on singing and the pope/fen1ans etc, but a large part of it is that people are sick of football fans (all of them) acting like gorillas on the way to and from a game - it wasn't just an anti-Rangers thing.

 

I admit the SNP, or any other political party, will be loathe to get involved in such a vote loser, but if there's a case for them to look at there's no reason not to bring it to their attention. At the very least they can't be more in bed with celtc than Lhabour.

Bollocks they did...I was on the point of cancelling my membership when I read they were going to cave in to religious loons over the marriage equality bill. Pleased to see them telling the god botherers to mind their own business, altho churchy types' obsession with what other people get up to in bed seems unlikely to diminish any time soon.
