The Scottish Cup Final: Rangers v Hibs

Recommended Posts

Where are they now?

Rangers last visit to Hampden for a Scottish Cup final took place 7 years ago which ended with the 'Gers lifting the trophy after defeating Falkirk, seems a distant memory now and certainly at the time no-one could ever have forecast the events that were to follow just 3 years later.

16 players were in the squad for that particular match in 2009, so let's have a look at what they are all doing today.

GK Neil Alexander: Released 4 days ago by Hearts despite spending the season as first choice.

RB Steven Whittaker: Plays for Norwich City relegated from the EPL this season.

CB David Weir (Captain): Assistant manager of Rangers FC.

CB Madjid Bougherra: Plays for Al-Fujairah in the UAE Arabian Gulf League.

LB Sasa Papac: In 2012, Papac announced his retirement from professional football for health reasons, after failing to recover properly from a groin injury.

RM Steven Davis: Part of Southampton's success in reaching their target of European football for season 2016-17.

CM Barry Ferguson: Currently in management with Clyde FC. since June 2014.

CM Lee McCulloch: Player/Coach at Kilmarnock FC, appointed Kilmarnock manager on an interim basis after Gary Locke resigned on 30 January 2016, returned to his coaching duties after Lee Clark was appointed on a permanent basis in February 2016.

LM Kyle Lafferty: Current club Norwich City, spending his time on loan to other clubs. His 7 goals as top scorer for Northern Ireland helped his country qualify as group winners for Euro 16.

ST Kris Boyd: Plays for Kilmarnock, hoping to survive a play-off match on Monday to keep his side in the Premiership.

ST Kenny Miller: Expected to start in the 2016 Final vs Hibs.

Subs used:

ST Nacho Novo: Scored the only goal of the game with his first touch after replacing Boyd at the interval. Last played for Carolina Railhawks, currently a Free Agent.

MD Steven Naismith: Replaced Kenny Miller with 5 minutes remaining. Swapped Everton for Norwich in January 2016 in a £8M deal.

DF Christian Dailly: Came on for Kyle Lafferty after 88 minutes. He later played for Charlton Ath, Portsmouth and Southend Utd before retiring in 2012 to concentrate on studying for a sports science degree and working for his coaching badges.

Unused subs:

GK Allan McGregor: Plays for Hull City. On 17 May 2014, he started in the FA Cup Final against Arsenal, in which his side lost 3–2.

DF Danny Wilson: Along with Kenny Miller, most likely to start the match.

Here's something the younger 'Gersnetters might not know...It was only until I reached my late 20's before I learned this.

Rangers name isn't actually inscribed on the cup itself, due to running out of space on it, so they had to produce for the trophy a magnificent plinth to accommodate future winners. Rangers FC are well on that.

More on the trophy...

The Scottish Cup is the oldest national trophy and also the oldest association football trophy in the world. It was made by silversmith George Edward & Sons in Glasgow and has been presented to the winners of the tournament since 1874. The solid silver trophy is 50 cm in height and weighs 2.25 kg. The original trophy is displayed at the Scottish Football Museum at Hampden Park. It is removed once each year to be cleaned and presented to the tournament winners. After the presentation ceremony, the trophy is returned to the museum. A replica of the original trophy is given to the tournament winners after the ceremony and is also used for promotional purposes.

Morning Bears!!:rfcbouncy: Wow, its here. Its like the calm before the storm over here near Hampden. Weather is dire as usual, might brighten up with a bit of luck. Got a decent nights sleep but was up at 7am as usual. Stomach is churning, this is probably, if not the biggest, then one of the biggest Scottish cup finals in our history. Every player in the team will become a legend and be spoken about by generations to come should we life the trophy today:champs: 3-1 Bears:rfc:

One more game to round off the season.

After a lay-off we need to get up to a high intensity and tempo once more.

There was only one vital game this season where you could say we failed and that was against St.Johnstone in the LC. I think we learnt from that and thereafter modified a few things in certain circumstances which have worked for us.

Today is a different type of challenge in that it's almost an internal thing to do with the mental state.

With MW&Co in charge you have to be confident that we can overcome it.
