Tavernier, Barisic, and Ridvan are rather good wing-backs. One might argue that Tav could play in a back-three, yet all three are IMHO more useful as left- or right-sided midfielders in front of a back-three, when defensive is the order of the day, effectively creating a back-five in times of need.

 

Ridvan is able enough to play left-winger too, but I'd only adopt that if we have actually 2 real strikers and lack other left-sided-true attackers. We have seen though that he has enough pace and ability and is willing to shoot for a more advanced role than pure full-back.

Looks like this Cifuentes is next through the door. Fits age profile and may have sell-on value; could play in Jack's position when the latter is on treatment table; seems to be versatile. If we are mirroring Brighton's recruitment policy then that will do me; they have taken relative unknowns and moulded them into their squad with a judicious mixture of youth from their academy.

As money is tight, we need to spend it wisely. What we spend it on depends on our priorities. If the priority is to win the league, the money would be spent on those who will score goals. As we regularly have possession in excess of 70%, if we take more of our chances, the defence will help protect any keeper. If Europe is high on our priorities, perhaps a commanding keeper is required. I know we want both but we may need to choose.
