  1. Wrote about this on another thread. Sounds like common sense to me. Love the idea of Thomson being captain - I think his best days are to come. My only reservations are his propensity to injury and his occcasional rashness in the tackle leading to suspensions.
  2. As we write it seems - according to the Sunday Mail - that McGregor may be given an Ibrox 'lifeline.' If so, fine. Think he would have had more than enough punishment. As for Barry, he's burned his boats, I'm afraid. I'm not one of his haters - would have loved to see him make the Hall of Fame, but he's just not cut the mustard as a player for some time now. Sadly (and I look at this from both Rangers and Scotland perspectives) there is no way back for them for Scotland while Burley is in charge; his authority would be irreparably diminished if that were to happen, and I think we would have to wait for someone like Souness to take over. He would insist on the slate being wiped clean.
  3. I seem to recall the great Beckham giving the one finger to English fans after the Portugal semi-final. no punishment there. We in Scotland seem to specialise in making dramas out of crises. Problem was Walter gave a dressing down to both players before Wednesday night - told them to show the manager respect - and they still made arses of themselves.
  4. Will it make Gordon Smith happy? Whether you like it or not if we don't have a strong national team we will become a backwater, revenue will dry up etc. and we've already lost CL money. Also consider this: some Scottish players may not want to come to Rangers if it means they cannot advance their careers by playing international football. Don't allow your (understandable) negative feelings towards some neanderthals in the Tartan army to cloud your reason.
  5. Well done, Gribz. "Stop start" or not, you've summed up things very comprehensively. Maybe you write better in the white heat of anger! Actually I think Scotland will miss them more than Rangers, and I thought Walter's punishment actually did Burley's job for him. Think the whole thing has become ridiculous now with Mr George Peat wading in with his size 10's. However, it's WS we're talking about. Struth would have been proud. I wonder what Mr Maineflyer - who has often called Walter spineless - thinks now?
  6. Well said mate. I feel equally sad for both Rangers and Scotland. I go back to the days when Rangers WERE Scotland. I'm damned if a few narrow-minded Tartan army bigots stop me supporting both. Which is why I don't share the view that it doesn't matter if Gers players never represent their country.
  7. I'm sure there will still be fallout from this. I don't think Burley can last much longer now. just as with PLG there must be 2 sides to the story and blame on both sides; if Burley had respect of all the players in the first place, none of this could have happened.
  8. I'm not sure how he was "punished by Scotland". By being dropped to the bench? I'm sure they would both have been left out for footballing reasons anyway. Though I think Mcgregor was blameless in Amsterdam, he doesn't inspire confidence when coming to collect cross balls in the same way as Gordon - and Iceland were a very big team. That dull clapping noise you hear is Bill Struth turning over in his grave to congratulate Walter. The best thing now would be for Dick Advocaat to come and take Barry away, though I think he will be missed more by Scotland than Rangers.
  9. Jeez, that's really depressing, Frankie. Despite the reservations we have about Walter as a coach, as far as discipline is concerned, I've always thought him as solid as a rock. If he can't sort, who the hell can?
  10. Just read the article and was wondering the same thing myself. Never saw Broadfoot as especially anti-Rangers, so you have to wonder. I know some bears wil say there's anti-rangers agenda in the media, but this is Scotland we're talking about. How does it help their cause to damage Scotland? Because by banning Ferguson and McGreagor, we are just shooting ourselves in the foot. They may not be first choices but with the limited talent we have, we need these two in the squad. Particularly McGregor; I cannot see another no.2 who is anywhere close to challenge Gordon. I recall those in the press who said that on Smith's return, Fergie should never captain Rangers again, and I thought it was too harsh - now I wonder. As chilledbear says, the picture says it all.
  11. He was a legend to me mate - the first no. 7 I ever saw. You were still in your romper suit at the time.
  12. According to the radio Fletcher played well. But my point is over the Le Guen scenario I sided with Barry; this time I don't think we should back him unconditionally. His time at both Rangers and Scotland may be up. The other reason apart from Hutton we won tonight is Ross McCormack. Another one that got away methinks.
  13. You could also say that it's more than a conicidence that Ferguson was involved on both occasions. Is he blameless? Can give him the benefit of the doubt with Le Guen but he does now appear to be nothing more than a shit-stirrer I'm sorry to say. As things turned out, Burley's decision to save Hutton and Gordon for this match was the right decision. So what exactly has he done wrong? And Fergie has been poor for both Rangers and Scotland this season. It seems that Darren Fletcher performs better without Fergie in the team. And just who do you want to take over from Burley? If it's souness we'll have no players left because of his abrasive management style.
  14. I've often wondered about Souness too. But there's one big problem with him - he falls out with players too easily. We'll get the Graham Roberts scenario if he takes over Scotland - and we cannot afford to lose any good players. Sorry, his man-management is appalling.
  15. You're probably right, but I never would have had him down as a 'holding' midfielder:confused: He and Thomson had a great partnership at Hibs.
  16. It's a real conundrum, this. I think he is unsure himself what his role is. With Mendes in the team, they both want to demand the ball and create -each is intimidated by the other's presence. Like Gerrard and Lampard maybe they cannot play in the same team. This is why I'd prefer to have Thomson and one other, Barry OR Mendes (or Davis). Thomson is left-footed and more of a holding player, so he complements the other perfectly. with Scotland it's a similar problem. Yesterday Brown was designated the holding player (!!), leaving Barry to hunt and harry. If he's to be a playmaker, then for Gers he needs Thommo beside him; for Scotland, he needs, dare I say it - Thomson again!!
  17. Now, now! Whatever we think of Walter he must have something going for him as Gazza has always rated him (the real Gazza, I mean not Gazza 8!). Be honest, would you not like to see a legend involved at Rangers in some way?
  18. Can't see why it should be an eiither/or. Rangers for me as well - however you look at it, it would be a great achievement for Scotland as we come from the Scottish League.
  19. My point is that the Arsenals and the Manu's still seem to have a better track record than we do of giving youth a chance- young Wellbeck is a case in point. And that is despite their huge buying power. We should develop a reputation of being a place where good young youth can get a chance. If big clubs buy in our youth they will only rot in the reserves given the enormous squads they have. By the way I think Ross McCormack has blossomed away from Scotland. what does that say about our coaching system?
  20. Hope you're right. Worse than anything Walter has done is to see other clubs constantly being linked to the cream of our youth. If EPL clubs rate them, they must have something going for them - or is it harder to play in the SPL:devil:
  21. Couldn't happen to a nicer club. But before we get too smug, let's remember our own version - M. Hemdani.
  22. Yeh, all right - forgetting Laff was still a youngster:)
  23. Bougherra and Fleck - no other choice possible.
  24. We should be told. If it simply is that his injury has done for him then why cant the club just be honest?
  25. So limited are the chances of young players getting a game for our first team, that they can make an international debut first! It's about time Walter started appreciating our young talent the way other shrewd judges are.
