The January Transfer Window Rumours and Deals Thread

Recommended Posts

Why should the club show more concern towards a managers wants than what is best for the club? Managers selecting signings on their own is antiquated and quiet frankly bad for clubs. Manager whims should not be the main directive of any club. No one person should shoulder the responsibility of player recruitment or your at the whim of that person. Teams with philosophy set by club with manager input is the very best approach just ask Southampton.

But....It's the managers responsibility for putting a team out on the pitch come Saturday afternoon, and ultimately his responsibility for the team to be successful.

If player acquisition is not led by the manager, then it is likely that the team won't function as well as it could. It's all well & good a DoF (for example) going out and buying players to fit a particular philosophy, but it's the manager that's working with him every day, and it will be the manager that gets fired if the player/team don't function properly.

FARE-WELL Motherwell star Louis Moult rejects Rangers and Hibs in favour of a move to Championship side Preston

The Well hitman will join up with former Hamilton boss Alex Neil after being persuaded to sign a pre-contract

PRESTON have won the race to sign in-demand Motherwell striker Louis Moult.

Rangers, Hibs and several clubs down south had been chasing the free-scoring English frontman.

But SunSport understands Alex Neil has persuaded him to pen a pre-contract with the Championship side.

Moult, 25, has been in stunning form for Well for the third season in a row.

He has already netted 14 goals this term after scoring 18 in each of the previous two campaigns.

Moult opted not to extend his Well deal – which runs out in the summer – at the end of last season.

That then allowed him to speak to interested sides from the start of December.

Preston moved quickly to land their man for next season.

But that could yet mean he has played his final game for the Fir Park side.

The ex-Wrexham striker is currently nursing a hamstring injury which is unlikely to see him return until the start of January.

Former Hamilton boss Neil could now try and tempt Well to part with Moult when the transfer window opens next month.

"The Sun understands ..." of course. Thing is, it was already murmured that his preferred option would be return to England anyway, so please refrain from giving FLAK to the Board about not trying to get him.

Regarding Moult, are clubs even allowed to approach and speak to the player prior to the January window?

So long as Motherwell give permission, I don't imagine its an issue at any point.

Although I think the rules on pre-contract negotiation are that they would have to notify Motherwell that discussions were happening once the player moves into the final 6 months of their deal... or something like that anyway.

Not sure how it works with Walker as clubs in other countries can start talks on this basis earlier? I'm sure I heard something on this the other day

Motherwell manager said the other night that they offered him plenty of cash to stay but he wants away. He also said that if an acceptable offer comes in January the player will be allowed to leave. If their valuation is not met then he'll be kept until the end of the season.

I'd take from that the players agent will be free to talk to anyone.
