MURPHY'S FLAW

Steven Gerrard to Rangers: close pal Danny Murphy says ex-Liverpool team-mate ‘very wary’ of failing because of lack of transfer funds

The Anfield legend - who has spoken to Murphy in the past week - is expected to resume talks with Gers chiefs today about becoming the club’s new manager.

STEVEN GERRARD is “very wary” of failing at Rangers because of a lack of transfer funds, according to his close pal Danny Murphy.

The Liverpool legend is expected to resume talks with Gers chiefs today about becoming the club’s new manager.

And his former Anfield team-mate says he has spoken to ex-England skipper Gerrard about the Ibrox offer and its potential pitfalls.

Speaking on Sky Sports show The Debate alongside ex-Celtic star Craig Bellamy, Murphy opened up on his chat with Gerrard.

He said: “First and foremost, after speaking to him, I know there’s a couple more hurdles to jump before he decided on doing it.“And that is about what is going to be put in place to give him an opportunity to compete.

“Because he’s very wary of going up there, taking the job and having your hands tied behind your back and then you fail. “I also think as well, even if he was given decent backing and it didn’t go so well, it’s not going to hurt him too much.

“People don’t expect him to go up there and win the league, do they? “The gap’s so big, isn’t it?”

SunSport Online told today how Gerrard was quizzed by his BT Sport colleagues about the possibility of him taking the Light Blues hot seat following Liverpool’s Champions League semi-final clash with Roma.

It’s been another turbulent week at Ibrox following Graeme Murty’s axe.

Directors Paul Murray and Barry Scott quit while chairman Dave King is being chased through the courts by regulators after failing to cough up cash for his Rangers share bid.

It’s understood Murray and Scott’s departures are to aid the restructuring of the Gers boardroom — potentially paving the way for new investors.

But Murphy hopes his friend will take the Rangers job if he’s given transfer kitty assurances.

He added: “Amazing support, great stadium.”

Even if Murphy did say what's written in that article, it's hardly anything you or me didn't know anyway.

Interesting that the Scottish Sun chose "The Debate" from Sky Sports and not the "Sunday Supplement" show, where the people rather unbiased listed the pros and cons and one of the chaps pointed out that the gap is now 10 points or the like with the current squad, it is anyone's guess what the arrival of Gerrard and a few quality players would do to that. 10 points ain't a lot over the course of the season.

True.  Except we are 13 points behind them, not 10.  So unless you expect Aberdeen to be the ones chasing them next season then we need to make up 13 points :roflmao:

Yes, that was because the broadcast was screened on Sunday morning ... who would have guessed it.

We have 65 points with three games to go,............. last season we finished with 67 points.

I don't think there will be much in the way of improvement on our side after those 3 games.

What has happened is that Celtic have went backwards in terms of points/ consistency of result, I think the most league wins IAR for them this season is THREE (we are 4 (x2) , Kilmarnock had a 6).

The feature for us has tended to be that when we do receive a set-back we don't get back off the canvas quickly. Our fragility shows, our confidence goes and we lose more points right away. Celtic on the other hand, nearly always bounce back with a win.

What I'm saying is although the points difference (us v them) isn't as vast this season, we still have huge margin for improvement but after a relatively poor league season, so do they.

Suppose that article is the first hint that he won't be taking the job.

That article was from earlier in the week or taken from facts at the beginning of the week as I read that story 3 days ago. Since then Gerrard has stated that he is seriously interested and that he is going to Glasgow today to re-enter talks.
