  3. Reading @JohnMc’s excellent Wenger Stat topic and particularly the reference to Jimmy Gordon reminded me of what an old guy told me about what old guys told him about players. Rangers had “two Irish backs, you can’t get past” Bert Manderson and Billy McCandless. Manderson is in the HoF but McCandless is not. Manderson played 1915-1927, seven league titles. McCandless played 1920-1930, six league titles. Manderson deserves his place. McCandless should be alongside him, not just to resume a successful partnership but entirely on his own merits. His record is superior to many, specially some of the recent inductees. @compo probably watched McCandless’ last few games.

  7. Roofe, certainly and I think, Helander, had injury history. Great pity because they are the best at their jobs on the books.

  8. In away games, or games where the opposition open up, or play a high block, Sakala is the ideal player to stretch teams and offers a great outlet. Without looking at his stats, I don't think he's as potent or threatening in games where teams play low block and park the bus as he runs into traffic and down blind alleys. That might just be my perception of him though. Let's face it if he was a complete player (same goes for Kent, Alfie etc) they wouldn't be at Rangers, or wouldn't be here long. We have them as they have "flaws" and just have to hope the manager gets the best out them. He certainly isn't a player who I would jettison out the door unless someone comes in with an offer we couldn't refuse.

  9. Agree with this, but I'm firmly in the thinking of if i dont have a car and really want a Ferrari, a Skoda will need to do for now.

  10. Yes sir. Small ball, is quick ball. I say we beat them at their own game. Anyone know who this guy is? He looks pretty good in blue.

  11. The back four could have been a first team back four in an injury crisis. Bit alarming.

  12. New to the forum, followed the podcast for a few years and thought I'd join. Sorry it took awhile! Sakala's on his way to 20 g/a in the league which is some going considering he was bombed out until Beale came in. He's clumsy and erratic game in game out but also produces moments of magic and gets the numbers which make it worthwhile keeping him. I'd actually go as far to say in terms of the player trading model and building title winning squads getting players like Sakala on a free is essential; for profit and for depth, if he can get 20 g/a a season in rotation then we're laughing. Plus I love the guys attitude and there's something endearing about a player who's that raw but contributes. Yud

  15. I suppose in isolation you can look at it and think, he's a quality players and it was worth the risk that he could get fit and have a massive impact. And its a fair point. Just like many are doing with Jack after the recent performance. But when you apply that logic to half a squad its not an ideal strategy.

  16. I think that's a fair point, but he oddly seems to have this areal threat about him. We haven't seen much of it this season but he scored a few with his head last season. That always helps against the park the bus.

  18. You've got a good point. Many are too focused on height (see the reaction when Martinez signed for Man Utd). If we're talking about physical attributes, I think pace and power is more important, a la Bassey.

  20. Well, at least Ridvan and Souttar got some game time in. Today's moment of clarity. Ridvan is only about six soccer balls tall.

  21. I might be out by one but out of 13 games since New Year I make it that Jack has started 8 games and made a further 3 appearances as sub. He was on the bench but not used in one other game and only missed a single game at Livingston. Which are hardly the stats of someone widely regarded as a cripple.

  22. I've checked too and would say you're spot on. 30th Aug 1920, 2-1 win v bheasts. Gordon listed as no 8. No other appearance recorded that season. Well done.
