Undoubtedly correct, although I think Murray also had an obvious interest in securing his K and maintaining a positive personal image. I don't want to get back to slagging Murray but when his actions (or inactions in this case) don't appear to favour the club or the fans, it's hard to be anything other than critical.

I'm afraid I just don't get it. Why is the club so unwilling to get involved in such matters? What is it that they see as a threat if they get involved. They must believe there is a conflict of interests but I can't see what it could possibly be. If they are prepared to offer clandestine support for a supporter-led campaign against elements of the media, do they honestly think this would remain a secret for long? The only conclusion I can reach is that the interests of the club and those of the people running it are not aligned. It's this dilemma that has always made me dubious about initiatives like the STS project. No matter how well done they are, if the club remains at odds with the interests of the supporters then I find it difficult to see how unity and strength can ever be achieved. On the other hand, if the club would align itself with the fans, there is no limit to what could be achieved.

It may be unworkable but it is certainly unethical as far as I'm concerned. Entirely typical of Scottish society today, Gordon Smith would have us sacrifice freedom and nreward in return for authoritarian interference and pursuit of the lowest common denominator. How about this Gordon. Merge the SPL, SFL and SFA - cut paid officials by 75%, have one office facility and one set of costs. Use the money saved to promote the grass roots game in this country so that we can go back to producing our own stars again and allow clubs to bring funds into the game that way.

Thanks BD.

I think Gribz has it right. There can be no absolute when it comes to who is or isn't a Rangers legend. Some will attract a consensus while others will be more personal choices. I imagine few would argue with George Young, Tiger Shaw, John Greig or Richard Gough but many others are less clear in terms of years of service, appearances, trophies, etc. Jimmy Baxter is undoubtedly a legend for my generation, even though he squandered his talent and was the antithesis of the professional we admire so much at this club. Back to the subject of Davie Weir, I've often thought that he and Colin Hendry should have been the natural successors when Richard Gough left in 1998. Both were Rangers men and consumate professionals in the best traditions of the club. Neither of them spent the time at the club they should have but I'm sure they appreciate having pulled on the blue shirt. Much as I always liked big Amoruso, Davie could have had more than a decade under his belt and no one would have argued with his legend status.

Agreed. Gazza was a legendary player who played for Rangers but was never a Rangers legend. IMO, no one should be eligible for the HoF until ten year after they leave the club, to allow their contribution to be assessed more objectively.. I guess it just depends on what each of us means by the term legend.

In which case I take my hat off to you all because that in itself is quite an achievement .... and a very positive one too. In your OP, you say...... "........the Assembly has now submitted a summary response regarding the issues within the STS report and is in broad agreement with its findings" ......do you mean they submitted it to the club and, if so, I'd love to understand the point of engagement within the club itself. Or do you mean they submitted it for internal review by the Assembly committee? Also, do you have a sense of the possible timeframe going forward?

With one obvious exception, I've noticed that other sites have become increasingly willing to maintain open dialogue between them, sharing petitions and other information. That seems a brilliant idea to me and face-to-face discussion on important issues gives everyone a wider sense of activism while maintaining their own site identity.

Anyway, back on topic, the reason for my question was that if certain sites were invited but didn't actually turn up then I'd like to try to find out why or perhaps make a suggestion that they should do so in future. I've expressed little hope for a successful outcome in the past - not because the project isn't worthwhile or wasn't well constructed but because I've never believed the club would ultimately take it seriously. Recent changes might signal at least some room for hope in this respect. I'd have even more confidence if the current squabbles between the RST and the Assembly, and the apparently isolationist policy adopted by FF in most supporter affairs, didn't show that deep-rooted divisions persist in the Rangers community. It will be very interesting to see if anything tangible comes of this project. Creating some unity amongst the various supporter groups would be perhaps the biggest bonus.

Craig, I've always wondered how celtc's wage structure compared with Rangers. I've always assumed these were essentially private matters between employer and employee but can player wages and bonuses, etc be found anywhere?
-
But which of the sites that were invited actually turned up and participated?

Is there any excuse for not clapping the goals?
maineflyer replied to Bluedell's topic in Rangers Chat
Very glad to hear it. Haven't seen him for ages. -
I might not exactly have my ears to the ground on this but surely the comparison with Neil McCann is valid here. Were the same "hardcore" supporters also badmouthing McCann? If not then maybe there was something else about Burke they didn't approve of. I think there is a tendancy to play up a residual anti-catholic element where it largely doesn't exist. I thought Amoruso and Albertz could do not wrong and I believe most of the so-called hardcore thought the same. Play well for the Rangers and you can be a martian for all it will matter to any supporter.

Which is why we should (almost) never be fielding a 4-5-1 formation. Certainly never at home and never, as we've aften had to endure it, at home against bottom-six oppoosition. If 4-4-2 allows you to play you top striker, and to pair him with someone other than a crisp bag collector, then that might not altogether be a bad thing to do....... Walter?

It's a bit off topic but I wonder what Greigy's health is like these days? Anyone know? -
.....and I'll provide the champagne. Beasley's been draining money for no purpose for far too long. Should have shifted him last January when it became obvious he wasn't going to feature. At least the current embargo on new players has stopped the signing of expensive luxuries like DaMarcus Beasley. I'd go as far as to say that this summer's signings have been by far Walter's best so far. (it's a joke ffs)

Correct, no change here. Henceforth, my views on Walter Smith will be available for a small fee from my agent in these matters, the redoubtable Norris Cole.

So it's still a "wee" comment eh? Get someone else to goad me, you're not up to it.

It's like goalkeepers. For years every commentator used to ridicule foreign goalies because they couldn't catch a high ball, like it was a genetic disability. Gordon Banks could never have been foreign! As for divers, I've been watching them in the Scottish game for more than forty years and you're dead right about media hypocrisy.
-
Your comparison with Neil McCann is well made and blows the catholic nonsense out of the window where it belongs. McCann could be as infuriating as only wingers can be but over the piece he made a really good contribution to Rangers and was held in great regard by the support. Chris Burke also had talent but the fact remains we hardly ever saw it.

Maineflyer types ........ ha ha ha ....... that made my Sunday evening. Brilliant. I'm a brand. Listen, it's just that old Ham 'n Egg and me had a wee wager who can do the best Jack Dee impersonation. I won. -
I think we've seen enough of Kris Boyd to know that he is what he is and that he'll never really be able to change his style of play. There are aspects of his play I'd love to see improved upon but I could say that about every other player in the Rangers first team squad. In better times, Kris Boyd might struggle to get a game but these are not better times and he is the best we're likely to see for the forseeable future. All I wanted to say was that those are terrific statistics and we should be glad we have a guy who is consistently the top goalscorer in the country. Sniping at his isn't going to change him and we're not going to be able to afford to replace him with anyone better. I'd rather have someone who has a dubious workrate but scores goals than a striker who runs all day but couldn't to hit a barn door with a banjo.

Stunning statistics. We should just stop sniping at Kris Boyd and thank God we have him at Rangers.

Burke had the ability to be special but if we're honest, that was never going to happen at Ibrox. The chemistry between player and club never really looked right. His attitude frequently left much to be desired and I don't think Smith was ever going to give him the personal backing it would have taken to turn things around. Too much baggage on all sides. As for Bain, a complete arse of a man - but criticising him is a bit like flogging a blind man with no arms or legs, too easy and never likely to provide any real satisfaction. Surely anyone who would employ Martin Bain, let him earn over half a million pounds in a year, and give him day-to-day management of the club for so long must be more worthy of our attention.
