Did anyone else hear him say on the radio just now that Rangers have only two assets - Walter Smith and Martin Bain. He sure knows how to twist the knife.

Heard there is a press confrence @ 17.00pm ???

You gave a depressed Rangers support an afternoon of hope. Who could blame you for that ........... it's more than anyone at Ibrox has done for a while. However, now that it's clearly not true you should be flogged mercilessly. -
Maybe it was a cleverly orchestrated move to deflect attention from the disaster on the park because the only story in town this evening seems to be Racist Rangers.

It's hard to see how we'll miss an invisible man.

Rangers players - who should stay & who should go
maineflyer replied to Zappa's topic in Rangers Chat
STAY Papac Thomson Davis Naismith Fleck Novo Boyd McGregor LEAVE Bougherra - he's gone anyway Edu Smith Whittaker Weir McCulloch Miller Lafferty Rothen Beasley Broadfoot -
So it's OK if he buys poor players - just so long as he spreads it around enough. Amazing.

As predicted, I see most radio and tv stations have this as a major news item, with fingers clearly pointed at the club. Yet another PR disaster.

Ah well fair point, I don't suppose we do actually. Seems unlikely though but you have as usual probed until you found our achilles wotsit.

There's been no mention of this conference anywhere else so it looks like the information was incorrect. -
No one is denying him his right to talk about what happened, I just think he should first have acknowledged his professional responsibilities to his employer. Then he could talk all he likes to whoever he likes.
-
Concisely put ..... that's exactly the point.
-
Right now that looks like easy money.

Epic stuff :D

To be fair Craig, it's not difficult to make a distinction between two issues here - the abuse that is unforgivable and should not be deliberately swept under any carpets - and the perhaps ill-considered decision by Edu to publicise it on twitter. The point is that the club will now be condemned from all angles (the club mind you) while the perpetrators will still go scott free. Edu's decision may have been knee-jerk and understandable but it's still possible to see it as poor judgement from another perspective. While Edu had the satisfaction of getting it off his chest, he may diddly difference to whether the guitly parties were brought to account.

If it's in connection with the annual accounts (aren't they already late?) then this could be an announcement no one wants to hear. Interesting times. -
Walter Smith's signings and spend........... Alexander £0.5m Whittaker £2.5m Bougherra £2.5m Davis £4m Mendes £3m Thomson £3m Miller £2.5m McCulloch £2.5m Lafferty £4.5m Edu £2.5m Beasley £2m Velicka £1m Naismith £2m I make that £32.5m which is no small amount of money to be turning out such awful performances. No matter how desperately some try to defend him at all costs, possibly at the cost of personal credibility, Walter Smith hasn't been short of money and hasn't been able to build even a half-reasonable team. Money wasted, progress poor, course of action obvious.

Further to my previous post above, we were in a similar state in 1983 when John Grieg resigned. Greig was hugely respected by everyone but had the dignity and pride to realise it wasn't happening for him and made the decision to step down. I always felt that was an amazing thing for someone as committed as Greig to do. At the time, many fans were glad he went but very few thought less of him for his few years as a manager. Will Walter Smith show the same dignity and earn the same respect? I hope so.

That's probably very good advice. Rangers have been known to do some daft things to deflect attention from bad news. Stadium expansion anyone? -
Rothen's signing was a display of gross incompetence from our management. Simple as that.

Oh, I'd like a lot more than that....... but it would be a start. -
They won't have to make it up, it appears to have happened right enough. But the media in this country won't just report it, which they certainly should, they will exploit it with the express purpose of inflicting as much damage as possible to Rangers.

Could be a statement about the Edu nonsense but I'd have thought they would just release a general statement without calling a press conference if that was the case. I know what I hope it is but we couldn't be that lucky. -
I don't expect anything less and I'm well aware who brought it on us. They'll get no defence from me. What made you think otherwise?

In 1998 Walter Smith walked out on this club after seven years as manager. The playing side was in utter disarray when he left. Despite spending incredible sums of money, he had built nothing for the future, half the team were past their sell-by date and left with him. This time around, he has achieved the same result in half the time and spent only about £20m, so he must have learned something along the way after all. Did anyone seriously think the outcome of Walter Smith returning to Rangers would be any different? Does no one remember the mess he left us in last time? Without Advocaat buying virtually a whole new team and building enormous debt in the process, we would have less difficulty recalling the true legacy of Walter Smith. Hopefully, Smith will have less appetite for criticism that some think. He's certainly going to get plenty of it from now on and I just hope to hell he decides to walk again.

Expect to see this on the evening TV news programmes. "Rangers fans react to Euro thrashing by racially abusing one of their own players". One way or another, the media will use this against us.
